The countdown on the main page is when we're closing special edition pre-orders, not necessarily when the alpha will be released. We don't really have any control over when the download becomes available on Steam, but hopefully the two will happen around the same time.

GMT -4:00: 13:00.....GMT +4:00: 21:00

Does that mean 1:00PM on Monday in Toronto (which is EST)? GMT confuses me.

The countdown appears to be reaching zero at 9PM on the 26th here in Toronto which is under EDT. (Eastern Daylight Time: -4:00). I don't think the chart in the OP is correct.

So add 2 or 3 hours to OP's times? Wait that is Valve time, so that would mean a lot more hours, I'm afraid!

I can already sense the rage on the steam group chat, but I don't care because I find it amusing :3

Personally I'd like to know how big the update/download via steam is going to be...

To know exactly what time on the 26th it's going to be avail is pointless. I've waited years for this and a day or two isn't going to hurt :)

Can finally say I will be able to play some NS2 soon :D

I've had a bit of experience with releasing content through Steam, and nine times out of ten they're right on board with a quick update. I think we've shipped out updates as late as 7pm before, but midnight? I really can't say how that will go. I'm hoping someone at Valve is keeping their eyes on this and will be a champ.

Those times look wrong to me, Im in the Uk which is GT and it says 1 day 16 hrs remaining which would put it at about 2am on Tuesday 27th and not 5pm

Greenwich mean time.

So, GMT is named after a place near London (with a nice observatory btw) and they make the origin of the that time system +1 instead of +0.

Genius!

You must have a different timer then? At the moment it says 1:15:37 which counts down to 2am Tues morning here in UK.

Quoted from your link:

The UK is ONLY on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
from: 01:00 GMT Sunday 25 October 2009
until: 01:00 GMT Sunday 28 March 2010

And what is the day today?

It is the 25th of July. We get +1:00 for daylight hours. So the days in the summer seem to be longer.

And now for the big finale:

You said that the UK was is GMT +1.

GMT +1 is a timezone, which is a geographical feature. This is also supported by your "UK is in".

So you said that UK was in the GMT+1 timezone, which it clearly is not.

The UK is currently GMT+1, as it is Daylight Savings at the moment.

No, the UK always is in the GMT-timezone. Aswell as Germany for example is always in GMT+1. "NOTE: Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is the same all year around
There is no Summer Time / Daylight Savings Time" from: http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.co.uk/

The actual time is different, but the timezone remains unaffacted.

THIS ("what time is it?" + 20 replies) is the kind of problem that only arises while people wait for something.

btw: He's right, time zone is still GMT+1, but the actual time is GMT+2 ;)

I didn't say anything about geographical timezones, I said the time in the UK is currently GMT +1. Which it is.

But I don't really see the point in leaving this thread open so that people can bicker about what time it is in Britain.
