    First let Valve release Steam for linux, then NS2 for Windows and finaly when things goes well they can port the game to linux and mac.

    I'm not preordering because ...

    ..

    aww hell who am I kidding, I would have preordered NS2 as soon as NS1 came out!

    I'm with the "your point?" crew here.

    It seems a bit pointless to join a forum just to post "I'm not pre-ordering because I'm on Linux" when all info specifically stated that Linux is not yet a supported platform for NS2, then never coming back to said forum.

    All in all, it just seems like pointless trolling to say "I'm not pre-ordering, not because I can't play, but because I don't like your tone"

    Wow the OPs post is really well formatted for a troll :S

    I always thought being a linux lover implies that you can make anything work ... also there is a huge community here that will make this happen for linux if the devs can't.

    Also I remember the devs said that it should be possible quite simple to make it playable on linux, the only problem would be that there won't be any features that are provided by steam. For example you have to use the console to connect to a server.

    If you already spend "huge" (for me huge would equal more than the single prices of the bundle combined) amounts of money on the humble indie bundle I can't understand why you wouldn't want to pay for NS2, even if its only the 20$ preorder, until the beta comes up some people who got bored by the alpha too soon will make it work under linux for sure, or just do it your self ...

    I guess the fact that he didn't reply yet increase the chances of the OP being a troll ... well done it that case, you even trolled Max.

    I don't see what progress you are expecting to make here. It is already quite clear that the developers of this game have gone out of their way to meet the expectations of their supporters and I would expect that a version in Linux format in the future will be another example of this. While I think that you are justified in saying that you will hold off until further notice, as I would probably do the same, I don't think you are giving the UW team enough credit.

    Let me clear up a few things:

    Firstly, my intention was never to be a troll. I'm sorry if I came across as such. My intention was to come out and state my reasons for not purchasing, despite my desire to do so.

    <b>Secondly </b> (replying in order, more or less):
    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->If the linux market (which is astronomically tiny in comparison to windows/mac) doesn't fit their design build, then that's their decision.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    One of the links I posted up there deals with this in particular. I realize we aren't nearly as mainstream as Mac and Windows, but that has nothing to do with viability.

    <b>Third</b>:
    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Well that's great. The bonus of ordering the SE was supporting the team to hopefully make this game come out and be playable so that they can work on bringing it to the other platforms[...]<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    I realize that, and I'd like to help. I've said that I'd be there on day one to order it for Linux when it came out, and if there's a pre-order for Linux I'll buy that.

    From the same post:
    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->if you listen to that wonderful podcast - that they're aiming for a cross platform release[...]<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    I can't listen to podcasts where I am, unfortunately. The internet is worse than DSL and only slightly better than dial-up. But this is good to know. Thanks for the info.

    <b>Fourth</b>:
    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->rather than some speech to get recognised on why you don't want to buy a game, which quite frankly confuses me why you'd be so negative in a new thread[...]<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    See above. I didn't come here to say "Hey, all you WinBlow$ luzers guess wat linux is better so i won't buy your crappy product".

    My intentions were purely to convey my support <i>when</i> I'll be able to play the game. Would you pre-order an Indie title for the Wii if you only have an Xbox? No, you might like to show your support, but until they make a port or you get yourself a Wii, they won't get your sale.

    <b>Fifth</b>:
    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Just get a virtual pc program[...]<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Unfortunately VMs are useless for gaming, in my experience. Besides, if I was going to do that I'd just dual-boot Windows.

    <b>Sixth</b>:

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->No one cares.

    Not about your opinion.

    Not about Linux.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    You're entitled to your own opinion, of course, as am I.

    <b>Seventh</b>

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Windows 7 OEM is not much more expenseive than AAA pc title these days.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    I hadn't found this to be the case...where would you suggest getting it from? I'd love to be able to put my old Steam account to use again, and depending on how much it would cost I'd love to get in on the special edition before it's too late.

    also:
    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->just go to the pirate bay and type in windows 7 and u can get it for free. =P<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    Yeahno. Piracy is just not an option for me. It's straight-up or not at all.

    also++:
    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Unless it's just that you dislike MS and don't wanna support them. Then this kinda goes with the territory I suppose.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    I have friends who use Windows, and I don't put on my tinfoil hat when I'm at their places. I will admit I have no respect for Vista as an OS, but I liked XP, and from what I've seen Win7 looks really nice. Like I just said, I'd happily buy a copy of Windows, but when you build your own computers you don't get an OS bundled.

    <b>Eighth</b>:

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Or become an active member in the community, spread the word and get as many people as you can to pre-order/buy it so UWE have enough cash to do a linux port?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    I think this game looks PHENOMENAL, and I've told every first person shooter fan I know about it. At least three of my friends have already pre-ordered.

    i'm assuming you're in the US - (i'm not so don't know any cheap hardware/software stores) but its $99 at new egg <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116754" target="_blank">http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16832116754</a> for win7 x64

    i know newegg probably isnt the cheapest place either

    also thought of something - if you dont want to pay for windows - it actually runs for 30 days without activation (like if you borrow you're friends cd or something) so you can try NS2 alpha for 30 days that way, and who knows there might be a linux client by then.
  • Cereal_KillRCereal_KillR Join Date: 2002-10-31 Member: 1837Members
    Well nobody is blaming you for not purchasing NS2. It's actually the smart thing to do, you're using Linux (nothing wrong with that) and it's not a supported platform. It'll actually be stupid to purchase a game you can't play. The problem is that you're basing your decision on the tone of the dev comment.

    That being said, Wine Is Not an Emulator! And it's even less of a virtual computer. Again, wait for release before trying it out, but it is often a viable alternative.

    Lock thread?

    Locking the thread is fine with me...I'm really glad to know I won't have to pay $250 for an OEM Win7 license, which was really (on a base level, when I think about it) the whole reason for this thread...imagine having to buy a PS3 for one particular game. I always assumed that you could only get them if you buy in bulk. Looks like my Steam account can be brought back to life, and NS2 has a new supporter! :)

    Hopefully you all won't think of me as "that guy whose first post was a complaint".

    Obviously I'd still love to play it on Linux, and my promise of getting involved in the Linux pre-order still stands. -- I will buy this game again to show my support.
