Interesting Idea About Securing Hives

Not building in the hive
Some hivespots are pretty hard to defend, sp instead of building lots of towers there, why dont find a spot that is easier to defend and put a siegecannon(that can siege the hive) there and phasegate and turrets.'

whats the benefits?
a spot that is easier to defend
hopefully, a gorge will run to the hive, unaware of the siege and start building a hive for 80res only to have it blown to peices by the siege.

Could this work?

yup, It's allways silly to see that happen. Already do that a lot.

Sure it can. I've been at the receiving end of a hidden siege turnip a handful of times. I'd scout around the hive, find nothing, then gleefully cram my hard-earned 80 res into a new hive. Being blown off the station by a hidden siege usually gets a "**curse of choice** siege near hive X!!" comment from me.

Always make a cheap chamber near the hive location first, so you waste 14 instead of 80.

The few times i´m gorging, i always put down a Offensive Chamber quickly and run back to test siege activity and range.

This only applies if i´m supicious of sieges and marine activities near hives or choke points.

On the Marines side, there are a few hives where this is highly useful. Take the refinery hive for example (map with the rotating airlock whose name escapes me at the moment). Its FAR easier to hold the northern corridor and plant Siege turrets facing the Refinery hive than it is to hold the entire Refinery area. Lerks can jet in there and hide all over the ceiling, sniping at Marines, turrets, everything. Feedwater Control on the same map is another example, except there its more that there's very little building space IN the hive itself. Far easier to control the northern sections and plant siege turrets at the little roundabout.

The only problem is that sometimes there is no resource node outside the hive, so if you hold the hive instead, you at least have resources flowing in. The refinery hive in NS-bast is different though because there is a resource node in the left tunnel that you can hold and siege the hive.
