I don't know if refunds are possible though (last news was that it was possible, however they couldn't guarantee for how long they could keep that possibility). Which means your best bet might be a refund of standard, + new purchase of special.
I think it would be cool when this game officially comes out, with loads of players and stuff. If there are loads of players we would have to look out for the people that pre-ordered the SE.
It would be like: Me: Black Armour? I swear I remember your name Other guy: I remember yours! Me: Wicked!
I just read today that they were bringing out the alpha in less than 2 weeks, and saying that after that no more SE. So I just told myself "you have to get this game now".
The skulk looks wicked. The Hydras look great. The marine looks like food. (For the aliens) The marine missed the skulk big time. The gas looks realistic. The view from the Lerk looks evil.

The refund option will not work either. We are still accepting refunds until July 26th, but they take longer to process than that. You get your money back immediately and the game is de-activated but it takes a while for Valve to wipe the game off your account. Until the game is wiped, you will not be able to add the new one (since they are both technically NS2). And by a while, I mean weeks or more. I guess you could wing it and hope for the best but you would likely miss some or all of the alpha. In short, you could do it, but it's a huge risk and you likely would run into more trouble and not be able to play anything for a long time. :(

It may seem strange to some but everybody doesn't use paypal.

Nope. Steam doesn't allow sales this far ahead of games before release and since the special edition order will be stopping in 2 weeks there is literally no possibility of it being available from it :(
I'm very pleased to hear this great news from UWE. I've been very excited just waiting for this news.
Congrats to you all for your work ethic and vision (and staying independent).
It will be great to get to see the gameplay and features evolve over the alpha as new content and bug fixes are distributed across Steam. It will certainly answer many questions about how the game design functions. That will also make discussions on this forum a lot more useful and interesting.

Greatness. I can not wait to get back into NS. I can't wait to see how things have changed for both the grunts and the commanders. NS has come a long way since 1.04 when I migrated over from TFC.

It's an alpha. There are spots of polish but it's no where near ready for full public consumption.

Great news, great work, many thanks for your effort and example in indie development.
Another question about engine test - alpha.
I assume that if we have the SE, the Engine test will be replaced with the Alpha. Then, the people with the Standart Edition will be able to hace access to the engine test?
I have a friend that wants to buy the game for the tools but can't afford the SE and needs to know if he will be able to test the maps in the engine test.

Nice to know the Alpha is coming out, but this is the worst possible date ever.
I know for me, I will be playing SC2 more. A day of NS2 to see what its like, but ill rather play a fully completed game than an alpha which is incomplete and WILL be buggy.
First off great work UWE!! Congratulations on staying publisher free!
Now there will be a lot of disappointment on release of pre alpha. As flayra said this is not a game by any means yet, therefore it may not even feel like a game at first. It was a wise decision to stop pre-alpha access after july 26th, because the game will be rough, non hardcore fans will ###### and moan about how crappy it is.
However us the die hard fans WILL make this game what it was meant to be. I am personally excited and disappointed at the same time, because i know the framerate will be choppy, hitboxes will sucks, gameplay will be non existant. However its nothing time and hard work of UWE can't fix :)
Any word on what buildings/structures we can expect on the 26th? Another question is will there be interactible objects in the environment such as doors or elevators, or destructible doors or vent covers?
Quite frankly, when NS introduced Resources for kills with some version, teamplay was drained tremendously. Especially players on the alien team were striving too much for individual success. There was a plugin which disabled RFK and teamplay-neccessity increased greatly again.
If you are hungry for fixing compatibility issues, there still is stuff on the Get Satisfaction thing you setup yourself. Egoistically making notice of the issue I still have: http://getsatisfaction.com/unknownworlds/t..._randomly_crash
Also, I am afraid that you are likely to have no chance to keep track of the massive feedback you are going to get.
Anyway, looking forward to the alpha and always am happy to see independent developers make good progress.

Actually RFK, if anything, demanded more teamplay from the aliens, cause you were required to pool your RFK into 2 players, so that you could hive and fade a little bit earlier in order to battle shotguns that were handed out earlier cause rines got RFK as well.

Is it going to automatically be updated to Alpha or do I have do delete it and redownload NS2?
I can't wait to see this alpha. I wonder if they've polished it up for public consumption or if we're getting a real down-n-dirty alpha.

This is relevant to my interests also.
P.S. Does somebody still have or remember the link of that Trolls Blog who said ns2 is a scam and a big lie?
