Order Of Attack

Which way do you believe it should be?
I've seen mainly two ways to start out a game. The first being to take the first resource node outside of the marines base. The second is to take the resource node at an empty hive with the bonus of having a hive.

Now with the first pattern, normaly they try to crawl to a alien hive, getting every resource node along the way. Or they randomly go get resource nodes while ignoring the hives for now.

On the second way, has two patterns. One is to go get a hive with resource and then get the next hive and resource there. The other is to get the first hive with resource, and then get all the expansions inbetween the new marine hive and the marine base.

Also to note, on the second way, if they run into an enemy hive first, some times they will try to pull off a direct siege early.

Which way would you do it if you could have control over the marines?

I always try to get the marines to secure a hive first. You can bet that the Kharaa will be doing the same. It also depends on the map, usually its not as straight forward as a generic solution.

    I agree - hive.

Think of the game not as one marine base against three hives.

Think of it as four bases.

    Whoever controls more bases wins.

If the Marines can control one hive, and the aliens control two, then it's a standoff.

As soon as someone controls three bases, the balance of power inevitably tips and the game is won by that side.

wouldnt it be cool if we could now allow upgrades for either side...

    No HA HMGs

    No Fades or Onos

LMG Vs Skulk, fun fun fun!!!!

i love the first part of every game.

This is my view on this game as of far. IF, and IF, Aliens control 2 Hives, the balance of power would be more like 2/3 Aliens and 1/3 Marines. I say that because Fades can pretty much acid harass marines to death early-mid game. Aliens getting a 3rd Hive is just a simple luxury. And IF they CAN get that 3rd hive, it means that Fades are (Or always) holding off Marines.

Securing 2nd Hive is just so important to Marines because once Fades come, your **obscenity** is gettin raped.

Why are so many people afraid of fades?

Jesus man, just get 4 guys in HA, 3 with HMGs, and 1 with a grenade launcher.

If marines have resources to outfit even half their marines with heavy weapons and armor, and those marines aren't **obscenity** and stay together, then it's over for aliens.

It's because either we have new troopers or they are scared. It's sad...and annoying to be honest. I try to always deny the aliens a second hive right of the bat. i secure one hive in the first 5 minutes usually and in the next ten I secure another. In most games I command...my troopers rarely see fades. When they do I start dropping heavy weapons and armor and my marines proced forward destroying all before them.

I run into fades, stepping from side to side, then whip out my pistol. Got a good chance of killing them. But if not, they are weak, and hopefully you brought a friend, then they are, or should be dead.

And two free marines with lmg's vrs a fade of 44 resources plus 2 per upgrade, well that isn't that bad of a trade off.

Hive control is number one priority. You must have at least one hive, or you will lose. The game is designed to work this way.

Oh, and while LMG v Skulk can be fun, it isn't desireable for a full game. Flayra said this in response to people asking to make RP sites have limited resources, then run out. Once they run out, it would devolve into LMG v Skulk. Trust me, this would not be fun with turrets and chambers already in place.

"marines are not free they cost one RP"?

I am pretty sure they *are* free [except in tournament games].

    On-topic:
    #1 a hive
    #2 resource(s)
    #3 another hive
    #4 party time

Problem with limited rp's on maps would be that eventually one team or both would be totally starved or RP's...there would be none on the map and the game would go back to what it was in the beginning...except damn near impossible to win. endless towers of lame and mass turret farms. I like this endless stream, reminds me of Total annihilation. This way the game can go on as long as needed.

This is my order of conquest for every map except ns_caged:

    1) 1st Hive + resource
    2) an undefended resource or 2 along the way to 2nd hive
    3) 2nd Hive + resource
    4) 3rd Hive (game over)

If you can keep the Aliens from getting Fades, you will never need HMGs or HA, thus saving a lot of resources to spend on things such as:

    3 turrets in main
    4 turrets in each hive
armory in 1st hive (don't bother in main)
observatory + motion tracking in 1st hive
phase gate in each hive and main
    health and ammo

The whole point is to be cheap and to move fast. If the Aliens are really good and they hold that 2nd hive, then a backup plan would be to either move CC and spawn portals to 1st hive and/or secure enough resources to get HA/HMG/welders.
