Crackling sound problems
Since the new server patch came out, after playing NS for a couple of minutes, the sounds all start crackling and sound like there's lots of static. This only happens in NS, not TFC or any other HL mods, and not in things like RTCW. I was wondering could it be something to do with Norton Virus Scanner (?) maybe or some other conflict. I'm running a Soundblaster128 pci card, one of the old not very good ones, but it's fine with everything else. Another thing, could it be caused by long uptimes? I have had my computer on for about 1 and a half weeks now without restarting and although I'm running a memory manager could this affect it?

Thanks for your help.

oi

Go into the game and type this in console:

s_eax 0
s_a3d 0
s_disable_a3d

I think eax was on but you dont have eax. Then you get that problem of wierd sound and thats why you aint got it in other mods because its default off

Hello.

Just found this thread and decided to reply 'cause I just bought an used Soundblaster Live! card (CT4670) and I'm having the same problem with NS (crackling sound) when I turn EAX on. Again, the EAX sounds fine (I think) with DoD and other mods. The drivers are the ones that Creative's website offers for that model, NS is naturally the latest. I didn't actually play NS before the latest server patch, so I can't tell if the problem showed up after that.

At least I thought that any Soundblaster Live! card is capable of producing EAX-sound. :-)

System:
Duron 1.3GHz
ECS K7S5A (onboard audio disabled)
Kingston 256MB PC-133
GeForce 2 MX400 32MB
Windows 2000 (SP3)
DirectX 8.1

Of course I'm quite happy with NS even without the EAX, but if this really is a bug, then I think it is nice to inform you guys about it.

I have this problem too and its really annoying. Only occurs during the ambient background music, does not interfeir with anything else. This obviously must be a soundlbaster issue, because I have a SoundBlaster Live! Value as well, with eax disabled. Indeed this is a reoccuring problem, it's not individual and doesn't seam to be a faulty software setting....anyone know whats up?

I assume that you guys have gone into your windows sound mixer and set the wave/mp3 slider to something below max.

I get crackling all the time in games (**obscenity** front speakers, but my rear speakers kick **obscenity**, meh) and setting the wave/mp3 slider to 75% always fixes the problem.

Sorry lads, to bring this on you - but the Live! cards is perhaps the worst POS that Creative ever made quality wise. It suffers from bad PCI engineering. Countless are the live ownders that have these problems with many games. The card hogs the pci ressource bus when you turn on EAX - I suspect CL of false advertising when they launched the card, seems like their socallerd super-duper EMU 10K1 chip didnt do much work on EAX but relied on the processor to do it. Or not, in any case EAX puts quite a strain on the PCI bus, and NS probably does too compared to other mods.

So my advice is to not play with EAX.

Also, you could try the feeble attempt of toying with bios PCI Latency settings, upgrading mobo drivers, live! drivesr (but Creative have a terrible track record of putting out driver updates. They rarely do).

Luckily, the audigy series of CL cards is better. I have one now that I am satisfied with.

yeah, i have a crappy Live! Value!, ueses that EMU 10K1 chip, guess you answered my question . I have 6.1 channel surround built into my mobo, and 4.1 speakers. With the Live! card that i have now i can hook everything up, enable EAX and set speakers to quad (so that all 4 satellite speaks are in action), and it functions properly, using all 4 speakers, so that i can actually hear the people creeping up to me from behind. If i ditched the Live! and EAX, and used the onboard sound included with my motherboard (6.1), would i still be able to get the 4.1 support from half life which allows front and back speakers to work together? thanx for any info on this

Well I'll be damned... I honestly thought that getting such a popular Creative card as Live! would fix all my problems (that I had with AC'97) and that EMU10K1 would be enough for me for a very long time. :-) You can be so wrong, it seems. Well, I'm not sure I'd even benefit much from the EAX. Using headphones anyway... The Live! is anyways much better than that crappy integrated circuit (a VERY low line-out volume and a LOT of interference from other components. I don't know if there's a known solution to this).
