NS 2 and Steam

My Steam runs off a folder on my second harddrive, and launching NS2 from its default install path, or from inside the /steamapps/common path (copied and pasted it over in hopes it would help) just gives me the error "Initialization Error - Unable to initialize network services. Please check that the Steam client is running locally."

Steam is updated (today) and is running.

im using windows xp professional 32-bit

    why would you try to run the pre-alpha with steam right now? they're working on a steam version and will probably release it today with the friday update. It's not supported at the moment and only works with non-steam game option

    Weird. I've never had an issue.

    I just have Steam running in the background and I'm fine. WinXP Pro 32-bit SP3.

    I can start it either from a shortcut, run directly, or from the shortcut I added to Steam (using the "add non-steam game" thingy).

    The thing on the right "Feedback" you can file bug reports there, be as accurate as possible :)

    I get the same error whenever i try to run ns2 without having steam running. Doesn't seem like much of an issue and hopfully they fix it today.

    To clarify: Steam has to be running, Where Steam is installed and where NS2 is installed does not matter.
    It should run, My Steam is on C:/ where as NS2 is on D:/ .

    NS2 won't work properly for some if not executed directly from the path its in (i.e. going to folder its in and directly clicking on Launch Pad or NS2.exe). A shortcut to the exe's sometimes works, but sometimes doesn't (for me, the Editor works from a shortcut in my Start menu, but the Launch Pad and NS2 fail to work properly). Try creating a shortcut to NS2.exe and then adding that to the Steam Games list.
