    <!--QuoteBegin-Apteryx+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Apteryx)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->3) Install your NS2 pre-release bundle. You must install it in the same wine-prefix as Steam, else NS2 will refuse to launch, warning about failed network services initialization.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    You can add a non-steam game to the steam list and it runs fine without PREFIXE or something like that. Moreover I didn't change anything in the regedit about memory (here Nvidia 285 GTX, driver 195.xx.15). It did run with high settings but with low fps as I said. If you are interested I'm using Gentoo 2.6.32-r3.

    What sound architectures are you all using? I still can't get mine to run, and its debug error log refers to the sound system, so I wonder if Ubuntu's stupid PulseAudio is to blame again. Are the rest of you using OSS or ALSA? Has anyone gotten this working on a recent Ubuntu?

    I have it working on pre-released Ubuntu 10.04 (will be officially out late April), using pulseaudio and with the WINE backend configured by default (ALSA). Have you followed the detailed instructions in the 1st post? Log errors referring to sound system seem to happen with WINE releases newer than 1.1.35. Try the 1.1.33 or 1.1.34 if you haven't already.

    I think the reason the high settings work for you without tweaking the VideoMemorySize has more to do with your card having 1GB of memory (mine has 640Mb) than with your particular distribution. I tried setting a fake 1024 memory size with the VideoMemorySize and this enabled the game to accept the high setting without crashing, but it killled (even more) the performances at around 0.2 fps (1 frames every 5 seconds :P).

    Does this mean the high setting mode will be reserved to owners of > 1GB memory video cards? I doubt so, but still, this is strange.

    I've started a thread on the WINE forums and I've received some advice, but it's been a little slow and difficult for them since they couldn't test the game quickly on their end. Most of the discussion has been through pm's to keep the clutter from the thread. Fortunately, I've been able to provide them an NS2 key to speed things up and if any of you would like to contribute to the thread with what has or hasn't worked for you please post.
    Include your OS and wine version in case there has been a regression.

    <a href="http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=8241" target="_blank">http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=8241</a>

    <edit>A game entry has been created and bugs entered. The person who has been looking into getting it to run has an idea of what is causing it to crash after launch and is looking into where the regression took place.

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Just a quick update that I have identified what appear to be the
    offending patches and alerted the contributor. This problem also
    appears to be affecting Warhammer Live.

    NS2 is also suffering from bug 21248 which can be worked around by
    disabling mmdevapi in winecfg.
    <a href="http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21248" target="_blank">http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21248</a>

    Some of the bugs reported by those who did have this running will have
    been fixed by one of Henri's patches in the interim so once it is
    working again it will probably be faster or more stable.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Looks like some issues have been identified and fixes will hopefully be incorporated in the next update for WINE.

    Awesome news zimzum, thanks for pursuing this. I'm especially excited to get the editor working in wine so I don't have to boot xp all the time to work on my map :)

    Zimzum : nice initiative of yours :)

    On my side, I'm testing it on CrossOver Games 9 beta, but it's having issues.

    Would someone happen to know if it's possible to change the settings manually (in a config text file, for example)? The game crashes at exit, and does not save the modified settings, so I cannot verify if the crashes I experiment are linked to specific settings.

    i would suggest posting the output of your console when it crashes to the thread on the wine forums.

    What kind of command do you use for starting NS2 without it complaining about Steam not being run? I still don't understand this, but NS2 starts fine if I click on the entry in the menu or start it from inside Steam, but it will always complains about network services if I use a command in the terminal (with the same exact command line I took from NS2 entry from gnome-menu). Could you please provide me with a sample command line that works in a terminal? I cannot debug without this working.

    Thanks.

    Browse to the NS2 installation directory and open a terminal. Use "wine NS2.exe" and copy/paste the output from the console. It's what I've been doing, should work for you as well.

    Thanks for this info. For reference, with CrossOver Games, I could start NS2 with the required debug info with these commands (I made a small script):

    !#/bin/sh

    cd "$HOME/.cxgames/Steam/dosdevices/c:/Program Files/Natural Selection 2"
    /opt/cxgames/bin/wine --debugmsg=+seh,+tid,+d3d9,+d3d,+d3d_caps,+d3d_surface,+d3d_texture --bottle Steam --cx-app NS2.exe --cx-log ~/Bureau/NS2.log

    i had no idea launching a game could be like a full time job!!

    My game launched by the end of my first glass, then after 3 or 4 more i remembered why i only ever ran windows. Sorry you guys are having these issues, Someday all games may be cross platform but i doubt that will ever happen. Just wait untill google really fubars cross platforming.

    Hi,

    I have been doing some tests to run NS2 on wine and found some tricks to step forward.

    I am using
    <ul><li>iMac i5 model with AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB</li><li>Mac OS X Lion with latest updates(10.7.5)</li><li>CrossOver 11.2.2 Trial(14 days-latest version)</li><li>Natural Selection 2 Build 226(worked with also 225 yesterday but all screenshots and stuff from 226)</li></ul>

    There is some giveaway with CrossOver tomorrow (31.10.2012), you can get free license for CrossOver with 12 months update and support from here : <a href="http://flock.codeweavers.com/" target="_blank">http://flock.codeweavers.com/</a> both Linux and Mac versions.

    First I installed Steam package from CrossOver, it comes with almost everything we need(directx, core fonts etc.).
    Noticed vcredist2005 was not included and I installed it from Runtime Support Components section again in CrossOver.

    Logged in steam and downloaded Natural Selection 2.

    Game doesn't get mouse clicks so I wrote <!--coloro:#4169E1--><span style="color:#4169E1"><!--/coloro-->i_rawinput 0<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--> to console to solve this problem.

    I searched a lot and found out some direct3D tricks in registry was necessary.

    <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]
    "DirectDrawRenderer"="opengl"
    "Nonpower2Mode"="repack"
    "OffscreenRenderingMode"="pbuffer"
    "PixelShaderMode"="enabled"
    "RenderTargetModeLock"="readdraw"
    "SoftwareEmulation"="enabled"
    "StrictDrawOrdering"="enabled"
    "UseGLSL"="enabled"
    "VertexShaderMode"="hardware"
    "VideoMemorySize"="512"<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->

    VideoMemorySize is the size of ram on your graphics card in megabytes.

    I tried lots of changes but this registry settings was the closest I can get.
    You can set this values different for testing such:

    DirectDrawRenderer = opengl / gdi
    OffscreenRenderingMode = fbo / backbuffer / pbuffer
    RenderTargetModeLock = disabled / readdraw / readtex

    Also you can change "enabled" settings to "disabled".

    With this settings there are some really good points and really messed up parts.

    First of all Ready Room is perfect there is no glitch(except you can't see other players, but can see their names when you point cursor on them), no flickering like in this video <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gb2e_Nq38Y" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gb2e_Nq38Y</a>
    After I get in game by selecting a side, I get some screenshots showing visual problems.
    Other player models are not visible, some structures are not in their places, instead they are flying :D
    HUD seems good but we see some ghost arm and weapon of ours.
    Here are some screenshots:

    <b>Main menu, not showing my steam avatar:</b>
    <img src="http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/3859/ekranresmi2012103012465.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    <b>Command station is not in its place, when you look through you can see the bottom of skybox, but you don't fall in it, fells like structure is still there and not visible:</b>
    <img src="http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/3559/ekranresmi2012103011230.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    <b>I found Command Station when I look from this pov:</b>
    <img src="http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/8751/ekranresmi2012103011225.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    <b>Extractor, sometimes its model get weirdly big when you get close, it disappears when you get far from it:</b>
    <img src="http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/1913/ekranresmi2012103011221.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    <b>Game looks pretty good(I love visuals of NS2) and you can see ghost arms holding rifle, there is also some ghost structure in the wall next to ALERT sign:</b>
    <img src="http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/2273/ekranresmi2012103011215.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    <b>Pretty much same view of previous picture:</b>
    <img src="http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3848/ekranresmi2012103011204.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    <b>When you lower visual settings( bloom effect, atmospherics, ambient occlusion etc. ), ghost arms disappear at some points:</b>
    <img src="http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/4826/ekranresmi2012103011201.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    I can use some help to solve this problems with more settings and modifications.

    Thanks.
