Is R_drawviewmodel 0 A Cheat?

I think not
When I first started playing Natural Selection, I was wowed by the fabulous graphics, great attention to detail and unique atmosphere of the game. I remember my first game, going alien and seeing the game world through the hungry teeth of a skulk. An hour after playing I had a splitting headache from playing in this perspective but because the game was so enjoyable, I shrugged it off and kept going.

In the past month of a half of playing, I’ve read the forums and kept up with a lot of the latest news, ideas and changes that has occurred in the game. One of the biggest topics that has cropped up has been the removal of the teeth and muzzle flash from the game interface (well, the order of alien chambers is probably the most prevalent, but the models take a close second). When I heard about r_drawviewmodel 0, I decided to give it a try and see what all the fuss was about. After hours of playing and from the feedback of others, I’ll tell you right now that r_drawviewmodel 0 doesn’t make a single bit of difference in my ability to play as either an alien or a marine.

One thing that I’d like to bring to people’s attention is that r_drawviewmodel 0 is not the Holy Grail of Natural Selection. There is a price to be paid for using this command and it can be a rather hefty one at that. The r_drawviewmodel 0 command not only removes the teeth and muzzle flash from the display, but it also removes critical information from the players’ view. Hive sight, energy levels, the marine mini-map and motion tracking are all eliminated when this command is used. Many times while using this command, I know that I haven’t been able to play up to the best of my ability because I cant tell which resource tower is being attacked or even which marine weapon I’m using at the current time.

Now, I know that there are some people out there that want this command and the editing of the models locked on the client side to prevent cheating. I know that there are some folks that will have read this far into the post and are saying, “Good! This is what you get for being a lame cheater!” For those of you that honestly think this and believe that the r_drawviewmodel 0 command is cheating, you’re missing my point.

The point is that the r_drawviewmodel 0 command is actually balanced! Yes, while I can remove the teeth and muzzle flash from the game, I’m also removing a lot of information that the developers put in to make the game more immersing. This is an aspect I can choose to change, a point of view that I have the ability to modify. The removal of one disadvantage in exchange for eliminating a valuable advantage.

I know that this post is going to get a number of flames because I’m supporting that this command be left up to the player to use. There are some commands that I agree need to be locked away from player control (fov being one of them, which is locked). However, this command isn’t one of those that deserves this attention. I know that the developers are adamant about keeping the models intact and as they currently are for the sake of game balance and to prevent cheating, but the simple fact is that the use of the r_drawviewmodel 0 command isn’t cheating. How can it be cheating when there are both good and bad aspects of using it?

So, I put this request to the developers. As you continue to work on the game, please do not lock this command away from the players’ control. Let us decide which we’d prefer to have, big teeth/bright muzzle flash or a lack of information from the game. You’ve got a great game, but please allow the players to have a little leeway in how they wish to set up their display.

And for you admins out there, yes, I do use this command while playing on your servers (when I remember to turn it on, which is right about the same time when I start getting a headache). If you’d like to keep me from using this on your server, I always play under the name Tryon and I’ll post my WON id later if you wish to prevent me from entering your server (at work ATM and don’t remember it off the top of my head).

Muzzle flash is the only thing that makes the lmg inaccurate without that u can shoot like a god (you ever notice how when yer tryin to shoot a skulk muzzle flash get in the way of yer view???)

You make a good arguement - but it falls apart when people start binding two keys - one to turn it on, one to turn it off. As a skulk, you just turn it off when you are about to attack, and have it on at all other times.

That is cheating. Period. The 'cover HUD when biting' is there for a reason - it should stay.

I honestly don't see any problems with the so-oft mentioned muzzle-flash. I don't know if it's my resolution or whatever, but it never distracted me...

You know, you could just ask the developers (or read their previously stated opinion with a bit of searching) instead of trying to justify your own preference.

ramses so yer saying when yer in close range blasting yer lmg at an alien trying to bite yer feet while jumping like crazy that the flash dosnt block yer view??? if so what res u play in?

Umm .. what is the big deal with the muzzle flash ?? I can still my crosshair , it is not anymore difficult for me to aim with the muzzle flash there.

I don't understand why that would make a difference .. or removing the bite model ... it's all trivial .

You either have the skill or you don't, setting r_drawviewmodel to 0 will not change that.

Exactly... I have one key bound to turn it off and one to turn it back on. So what? I love it, and you can love it too... if you stop whining on the forums long enough to go in-game and set it up yourself.

It's been discussed already, with flame-filled results.

Though, for some reason, my Spidey-sense is telling me that certain people are typing away at a useless, Se7en-ish nutty diatribe on the subject as we speak . . .

As McMasters stated above, as soon as people make a bind to turn it on and off at will (which, I'm sure many already have) they're getting the best of both worlds. That's cheating in my book.

I for one know using that command would make finding my target at close range a lot easier with a LMG etc. I say hardcode it.

For those of you that do it, I'd suggest you stop and get used to it. If you keep using it, your games only going to suffer that much more when its hardcoded.

It's considered a cheat people, and not liked. In other mods, it may not be an advantage, but in this one, turing off stuff just so you can see better is a cheat. It's like arguing over who gets the last cookie when I already ate it *chomp*.

Yeah, I'd say 'get used to it', but I don't consider it an exploit... not OUR fault the developers gave us a HUGE OPAQUE sprite to use against enemies who are about 1/8th your size and 20x faster... sucks even MORE for marines.

And it's not our fault you are blind and can't aim Just to let you know, I have horrid vision in (nerd with thick glasses which dont even help ), and yet... somehow, I was ranked top 10 in csports ranking and did fine as marines and aliens.

It's a cheat, exploit, unfair advantage, whatever you want to call it.

And this thread is degrading quickly, so...
