its sad that they're gone.
this thread is probably here because I went to UWE's videos on youtube again, and I Realized how much I loved the Class reveals, and that a small part of me is disappointed, I even go so far to say, angry, that We still haven't seen info on Lerks and fades yet. instead we get updates on the editor, which is fine I guess.. just.. I'm not a mapper or moder.

After looking through the skulk, Onos and Gorge reveal trailers again, I found some things in the animation and models that differs from the artwork, and are the reason why people complained about some things far back when this was still new. especially on the skulk.

here are the three news post I'm talking about.

http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/2009/7/detailed_onos_reveal
http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/news/2009...ed_skulk_reveal
http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/2009/8/gorge_reveal

this thread seems kinda pointless, even to me, but I post it anyway.

I'm glad you brought this up.

I just re-read the skulk reveal and noticed that they said they were taking parasite out. However, in the pre-alpha footage, they showed that the parasite was still there.

It makes me sad that they are taking out devour. It was my favorite weapon (but then again at least 90% of the games I play are as an alien).

It was also my least favorite weapon ever. I never liked it, even as an alien. But then again, that is just an opinion, based mostly upon how I sucked at using it. (How come Onoses could always devour me when I'm a million feet away, with a jetpack, in the air, whereas a marine had to be crouched, touching me, and holding absolutely still for me to devour them?)

What ISN'T opinion is the fact that a marine devoured just has to sit there at that pink screen waiting to die. Epitome of boring.

As for the topic at hand, I, too, am saddened by the lack of recent alien reveals.

Who says that was parasite? Looked more like a placeholder for the sensory chamber effect - and if not, it was likely a placeholder effect for something else or just a debugging tool.

Aside from that, devour being removed has left me kind of depressed also. I don't understand how an "evolution" can take, dare I say, one of the most important skills out of play. If was only incredibly lame if the marine team had no idea what they were doing, otherwise it typically didn't work out too well fo the Onos. It wasn't 100% either, as I could dodge a devour at least 3 times (and by that time it probably didn't matter as the Onos would have become bacon by then.) Blind faith in UWE tells me that all will be good, though.

    I hope, anyways.

devour can always come back. I have a feeling it may, it was such a great gimmick (nobody has done it before and since) and it would be so easy to re-impliment it... especially now that they have a convolution reverb sound system... they can literally do a reverb of a chicken breast or something and use that lol.

The rest of the reveals will be coming. We can only do so many things at once.

    Lerk reveal should be soonish.

True, devour was a slow weapon which used quite a bit of adrenaline. But it was a hit and run weapon used to get rid of equipment.

Personally I though it was extremely satisfying to eat your enemy.

No other game had a weapon that made me feel so happy after killing an enemy. (The desolator from red alert 2 does come pretty close though, nothing like turning your enemy into radioactive goo) :)

I still hope Babblers will make a comeback, nothing like hiding inside a field of disposable drones making the marines think they're all low hp Babblers :P

Why are you lot calling Devour the most important Onos ability? This is NS2. Who knows how the Onos will play.

Any true fan of Blizzard should have learned to have some patience by now. I think it might be because of them that I've never been in a truly I-CAN'T-WAIT-FOR-NS2-state thus far. Sure I want it, a lot, but there's no point sitting around doing nothing but waiting. There's plenty of other things to do that enrich my life =)

Devour was possibly one of the worst additions to Natural Selection in it's entire history of development, mainly because it totally changed the way people played the onos. People just camped around corners and devoured anyone that walked into their path. Then fled from combat until they could devour someone else.

    It was cheap.

Agreed, but why not change the mechanics behind it? It's not too hard to think of some ways to promote using devour in more giant-ass-alien-esque ways. New tactics involved and a little bit of NS1 lives on.

I'm not sad that devour is out. the Onos in NS1 was the big ass tanks with its ability all over the place. we got a stunning attack, a "instant" kill attack, strong basic attack, and a speed boost. if you reread the Onos newspost you will see that the Onos was the hardest alien to balance, for obvious reasons.

now they act as meatshields, as heavy support, as spike in the marine team's rear to get them moving, or else they will go splat between a wall and a giant alien swarm, a endgame unit, that creates fear and panic, similar as a heavy train would be to a lone hive.

    http://www.unknownworlds.com/cache/thumbna...ept_800x557.jpg
    http://www.unknownworlds.com/cache/thumbna..._01_800x622.jpg

I recommend to open both in two tabs and switch between them. I'm a fan of the artwork, if you didn't guess that.

The skulk artwork and video's main difference is that the artwork looks more energetic, because the front legs aren't in a 90° angle, the skulk seems to lean forward, again increasing the immersion of strength. the model looks so heavy, as if its weight was pressing it into the ground.
also, the artworks shoulders seem to be less bulging and more streamlined, taking weight from the skulk and gives the idea of speed. the models shoulderpads are extravagant and oversized for my taste in the artwork the shoulders are higher up, the chest deeper down, the shoulderpads transition to the neck using decent colors like black or gray. you can also see that the artwork design the skulk just looks more wiry, with longer 'overarms', which are more differenced from the torso.
the artwork also has a neck, again it seems to lift weight from the skulk and give him a streamlined predatory look. while in the model version it seems that the torso immediately transitions to the head. giving it a extremely bulky feeling.
also the head armor plating is a bit too light and... simple when comparing it to the artwork. the artwork has small eyes, surrounded by sharp, scratched, mean looking 'eyebrows' and the 'eyebrow's eyebrows' if that makes sense. also, the Model has a dolphin like hump on its face, while the artwork its a streamlined, "smooth" surface.

the Onos Model simply lacks the armorplates on its back, which is actually a deregeneration, considering that in NS, oni's worst enemies were JPers, who attacked from above most of the time. also, its head... lacks weight, it moves up and down and up and down, way to fast and easily for a head carrying most of the onos's armor. Maybe its just me, but I dislike the gorilla design, it seems odd to me as NS player who's used to the classical Rhinoceros/elephant mix

artwork is always going to be more expressive than a rendered model.
