Special like 98% of everyone else? :P

They'll probably try to lock it some way, but unless it changes gameplay (which it shouldn't, and even then probably won't be un-modable), I expect it to be modded in quickly.

Even if you can't gain access to the files, a good artist will still be able to just copy it visually.

    B-B-B-BUT I PAYED $40 FOR THAT ARMOR

Though honestly the $40 was more for the countless hours I spent on NS1. I just wanted to pose this question to the team and see what they have to say, since I can imagine people might be pissed when they join a server and everyone is in black armor.

Players who complain about it to UWE can opt for the "rainbow techno" armor that sticks out like a sore thumb to everyone, including kharaa. I'm fairly sure most player won't change their armor to that

I... I would die to have rainbow techno armor. If I give the NS2 devs another $40 you think they will let me have rainbow techno armor?

    Wasn't 90% of pre-orders special edition?

If you want to be "special" at this point you'd play in the default armour.

Once the female marine is finished and custom nude models come in, black armor will be special again..

My thoughts exactly! I'd pay another hundred bucks for pink - I'd even let them keep their eternal gratitude!

Also - there's some serious technical problems in actually protecting the black armor while supplying a highly modifiable game. I think it's somewhere between outright impossible and just not worth the effort.

Depending on how content delivery works in-game, even if you MODed in your own black armor, probably no one else would see it unless they downloaded the same armor mod you have.
Besides, if they tried to exactly copy the Special Black Armor with a MOD, I believe that would be a copyright violation.

Well my example scenario was a serverside mod, much like you can join a CS server and everyone is a zombie model.

As someone with minor experience with Lua modding, I can't see any possible reason player models won't be moddable. We'll probably be seeing things like this:

    <!--quoteo(post=1747504:date=Jan 16 2010, 06:21 AM:name=monopolowa)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (monopolowa @ Jan 16 2010, 06:21 AM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=1747504"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><a href="http://img190.imageshack.us/i/technicolordreamarmor.jpg/" target="_blank"><img src="http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/6517/technicolordreamarmor.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

In absolutely no time at all. Hell, if someone else doesn't do it, I will. I'm personally looking forward to my black n' red striped armour.

However, by virtue of simple logic, SE owners will still have monopoly over black armour in Vanilla servers.

But I don't think it will be possible to change models clientside easily... Mods will have to be determined serverside. Server says what models to use and clients have to follow that order.

If it wasn't that way every marine would have shiny, spikey alien models...

in NS1 i'm pretty sure you could mod the server to give const icons to everybody. but i have never seen it, so i doubt that anybody would create a mod to give black armor to everybody

black armor will be special after about 1 month the game is out because then a lot more people will see there friends play it and be like wow this game really does kickass. and buy it.

If someone makes a rainbow techno armor model, I will totally use that :P Take it one step further and make rainbow techno kharaa. Then make KOTH_Rainbow for NS2 :P
  • AhnteisAhnteis teh Bob Join Date: 2002-10-02 Member: 1405Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
Then you, the players, will say, "This server doesn't support the NS2 team. I think I'll play on a different server."
  • SwiftspearSwiftspear Custim tital Join Date: 2003-10-29 Member: 22097Members
The game will likely still be modable. Normal armor is armor_model_1, black armor is armor_model_2 or whatever. You can't just make your armor black server side from your client, and if a server moderator wants to change the settings they have to change both models.

You STILL have special status. On a default server you will have black armor and the other dudes will have green, but on Mr. Happies special server, you may be Luigi, and all the other dudes are mario. There are still 2 distinct model sets, one for collectors pack buyers and one for standard purchasers, but if it's anything like half life, server moderators will have free reign to manipulate those two distinct sets however they want.

Point of note here - If you mod in your own custom armor.... nobody but you can see it anyway, thereby defeating the point.

    EDIT: Swiftspear got it.

as for blackarmour, there's a reason for the "cl" in "cl_forcemodels", anything less is hats.
  • MidoMido Join Date: 2004-04-05 Member: 27742Members
Well, you guys have inspired me. I'm going to host a server that changes the models of all the "special" people, like myself, to rainbow armor, same with khaara.

Hmm... In NS1 i replaced many player, structure, and weapon models to make the game look better. If the black armor is better, then i'll just make it so all the marines look like their wearing it. I really don't care what other players see on their monitors. In all likely hood i'd jump on installing the first 3rd party made-from-scratch player model to replace all marines cause i don't like the current model. Maybe if all marines had the black crysis armor!!! :P
