As Razagal said, NS2 will use a blend of ragdoll physics and classic animation.
solution:
get a 3d modeling program and make 3d models for the players
go play HALO to get some ideas
I think being gassed by a lerk should change the color of a player's skin/veins to show an effect of being exposed to an unknown toxin. It'd be cool to have stuff like that, but I'm actually quite happy with what I've seen so far from everything that has been released. I can't imagine anyone who loved NS1 absolutely hating the artwork done in the sequel. Will the aliens/players have bullet wound effects?
I agree that when I think of NS, I think of all the teamwork surrounding the game and not horror. I don't think though that any death animations that would be more horrific would have any affect on the gameplay itself, it would just change the atmosphere. That said, I'm not requesting over the top gory deaths. I could care less. Its up for them to decide how they want the tone to be.
Has there been any news on if these predefined deaths will be generic like they are in NS, or a reaction to what killed you?
Like for example, lerk gas causing you to fall to the ground while coughing and spluttering, or being gored by an onos causing you to double-up and be lifted into the air before the ragdoll kicks in?
That seems like a fairly poor excuse. Taking away from teamwork gameplay focus? By this kind of logic we could say that they shouldn't make the environments or the graphics TOO impressive, or it might take away from teamwork. It was probably just a case that they didn't really find it fitting for the art style.
precisely why you're not going to see bloom or overly-decorative props; what do you think the art style is centered around? protip: art [*]follows[/*] gameplay design.
Going to have to agree here. The current game shines (on a very old engine?) due to the depth and structured, solid, fast paced "concise tactical combat." Compare the feel and game play of NS to something like DOOM3 or, I don't know, DeadSpace, whatever. The graphics, gore, pace, effects, all stress the horror feel, the atmosphere of being stuck, scared, bloody, and very vulnerable. I think its easy to make the mistake of lumping NS into this catagory just because its got "aliens in space" and not a "squad vs terrorist" tactical game. But the game IS tactical. Its ABOUT gameplay. Its NOT (hopefully not becoming either) "gimicky." Its not about "woah dude look how I totally blew that skulks body in half and its guts are everywhereeeeeeeee! Woaaaaaah! / keanu." From a personal standpoint, I would find this distracting from the gameplay and teamwork.
Don't get me wrong, I welcome an improvement from the current game (the engine is old as the wheel for god's sake), but I think those improvements will come naturally with the aformentioned ragdoll effects, physics, and just plain ol new engine.
..... But thats just you. To me, the very fact that I can do and see that would excite me and make me want to shoot more skulks! "Come here you little ######s! your all going to get shot so I can have my fun!" And taking away from the gameplay and teamwork? Are you Crazy? The only teamwork in NS is staying with the group and shooting the aliens when they pop out. That's it. The only other teamwork, is building the stuff at the base, which after the first 10 minutes, that becomes useless and the games all about rushing and killing, solo or with groups, especially solo on the aliens side, since only the gorges would be building base stuff.
