I wouldn't quite call this man a troll, sir. He raises a valid point which I'm sure many find relevant.
But the types of business deals UW makes are not my concern and Overgrowth comes as a rather pleasent surprise :)
Edit: Forgot to mention that I enjoyed the advertising video very much. pink beard ftw :P
I think this indie promotion is actually clever. I don't think how effective it will be at generating publicity, but it has some neat bonuses to it.
1. While they could lose a significant amount of profit per unit sale during this promotion (the two teams would in theory split the profits), since UWE is selling the NS2 SE version with this promotion (which is arguably way overpriced for non-diehards), they still gain a hefty profit AND bolster their 95% special edition sales figure.
2. Even if this does not give a lot of marketing for the two games, it is a way to merge the two communities together. This gives the appearance of the two games being formidable and they essentially did what a lot of free MMOs do: have freeloaders to justify the investment for other players. No one would play a MMO if there were only a handful of other players, but if the community is bolstered who play it for free, it makes paying a premium for a subscription or microtransaction more sensible. Having a small community is not attractive.
If you ever catch up on what Garry is saying about his game Garry's Mod, its actually interesting.
The one week he put it on sale at 50% off, he made more sales that week than he ever did before. In order to justify the sale, he wanted to (obviously) see sales raise at least 200%. In reality, they rose 1074%.
Been quietly watching overgrowth for awhile and... I just got a free copy?!

and there are people complaining about ###### in this thread?
I wonder if the guys at UWE are actually aware of how awesome they (and their company) are. I paid my debts for playing ns1 and now i got 2 games for free xD

How about you let UWE run their company the way they want to? They'll release the playable alpha when they're happy with the state that it's in. That's why they're starting with the dev tools. Give them time FFS. It's not like you can snap your fingers, and be all "Boom, content done." Try being on the dev side of things for a mod or indy game and you'll get it.
Now, for the reason I came here: Both games and the pack got a shoutout on Podcast17 today, so more good press.

I'd rather have UnknownWorlds wait and release a real good alpha then just throw out something worthless. While yes, Overgrowth has an "Alpha", it's pretty much the same thing as the Spark SDK thingy they have here.
I bought 4 NS2 pre-order Special Edition Key's from www.naturalselection2.com and did not get the Overgrowth keys.
And then the NS2 Keys won't work in www.wolfire.com , get message: " Oops, your NS2 Key is not eligible. ... Possible reasons: ..., or you ordered after the promo started. ..."

Thank you, but i will not claim my free rabbit game roflmao.

All I ask is people don't feed this. Ignore and move on.
Well.. I have pretty much no interest in playing a game about fighting ninja rabbits or whatever, but I hope this deal at least works out okay. It does look very indie though, especially when you put it next to NS2. It's nice that you guys are giving everyone a free cookie but.. Yeah, dunno if this'll help much.
Like some other guy said, i'm pretty sure some kind of Steam deal would be insanely effective but I have no idea if you guys have plans or resources to go that route.
"NS2 Alpha soon" announcement was slightly vague but still nice, shows that you guys are still going at it. Keep it up!
I'm curious how that deal works for the preorders before the pack. Is Overgrowth completely free for peolpe who ordered the SE or is UWE paying some percentage to Wolfire for every old preorder? Last one sure would be nice for Wolfire, but I hope it's the first one, as I paid 39.95$ to support UWE and noone else. Or is the whole purpose of this deal just to raise the number of potential players for both games?

This is my guess, even though each company would lose a handful of purchases by sharing their customer base in this manner, they can make up the difference in terms of increased exposure. Most of us NS-ers weren't following Overgrowth (I'd never heard about it until UWE mentioned hanging out with them)...I wasn't planning to preorder it, but now that I have it anyway, my friends will certainly hear about it if I like the game.
So are there already pictures with the OG guy with his new pink beard ?
Because you have to post those :)
Thank you for this great offer btw.
I also haven't heard of Overgrowth or Wolfire Games before you hang out with those guys and I didn't think about buying one of their games, but now I also own two copies of both games (or atleast the keys) and thats just nice.
However I can't understand those trolls, how can people be unhappy with free stuff that hasn't even any strings attached or negative side effects.
I'm very happy to welcome many new potential members to the NS environment and I'm happy to join their Overgrowth community as well.
I can't understand how people complaints about OG, they think its a little casual game or something like that, and that between these 2 games, OG is poor... It's an experimental game that come out of the blue and I'm sure I will have much more fun with it than NS2.. If I had to decide which game to take, it would be OG. It's just that NS2 is a lot more commercial than OG, thats all and I'm sure OG will have a better metascore than NS2 :P
ps: I still love NS2, this will be an awesome game as well, can't wait for their releases

Very big thanks, wanted overgrowth too but no money :D
Now I got 2 really nice games =)

What do i do now? :(
I believe you can get a refund by contacting Charlie (charlie@unknownworlds.com).

You should include how do i shot web considering that came from NS in the first place.
