Yeah, but doesn't your body start liking the taste of the booze because it associates the taste with the effects of getting drunk? So, without those effects, you'd not like the taste. But, I'd rather not lose the hang overs - they keep me in check. I figure if I suffer my hang over's like a man, I'm owning my habit. Course I could just be lying to myself.

I honestly dislike being drunk, or even tipsy. I drink because I like beer and a few random things of hard alcohol (mainly rum) and mixed drinks (mostly anything with rum in it).
The only aspect of alcohol that I like is the warming effect, which is perfected in things like hot buttered rum.
If some one could make near beer that didn't taste like bud I would probably be all over it.

I shouldn't think so, I like it because it has a pleasing smoky taste a lot of the time.

The idea that anyone would drink for any reason but getting drunk is baffling to me. I can understand not wanting a dizzy headache with a dash of vomiting thrown in. But drinking and stopping before the buzz just sounds like a waste of time.
Give me a dozen coronas and something sweet with vodka or kahlua in it and I'm good to go. Especially next to the pool/hottub/ocean at some sunny vacation spot.
Wine is most definitely awful. I tend to lump wine and coffee aficionados together as people looking very desperately to find their 'tasty' beverage in a version that tastes less awful.

I also don't understand booze, or coffee, for anything other than their desired effects (buzz, and buzz). why bother acquiring a taste for something like coffee when there are similar things that get the job done while tasting delicious naturally (like tea, or chocolate). and booze is best done in frou-frou girlie drink form so that it doesn't taste like pee.
I do like a good wine though. I don't understand how anyone could like beer but not wine. wine at least tastes somewhat fruity and not like a rainbow of flavored piss.

Tea is just about as unappealing as coffee is too me (unless heavily doctored, much like coffee), and I drink neither for the drug, simply because I like the taste after said doctoring. Also, for what it's worth, coffee smells wonderful no matter what, tea always smells bleh too me (unless heavily doctored). And chocolate has a minute amount of caffeine, and thus eating it for the drug is dumb.
There are a number of alcoholic drinks out there that taste different from anything that is non-alcoholic. I can't stand the taste of wine, I assume it is something about how my taste buds process it, or possibly my brain as the smell is just as horrible.
Beer isn't an acquired taste too me, I have always liked it. However I also have always liked only certain types of beer. I prefer beers that have a balance of hops and malt, ones that are primarily hops I don't like all that much, however I don't mind beers that are mainly malty (until 2 days ago, I finally ran across a beer that was too malty for me). I also like the taste of Rum, just straight up rum.
However, again, I drink beer and other such alcoholic drinks not for the drug, but because they are flavors that can NOT be found out side of them.

You might want to rethink that. Acetaminophen and alcohol don't go well together for your liver. If you do get in trouble with it (acute liver failure) you could die in days without fast treatment. Instead, just drink more water before going to bed.
As far as booze, I've never tasted any that I particularly liked the taste of, but getting drunk once in a while sure is swell.

I'm debating to go out and get some drink and then i see a party thread and this thread, now you've made up my mind. Damn you guys. Now I wonder, brandy or beer. Hmm.

I don't experience buzz. I am merely made painfully aware of the steady degradation of my motor and rational thinking skills. As everything I do for fun is based on my ability to think and walk properly, being drunk just makes me wish I wasn't so I could do fun things.

I tried to crush a can on my head while drunk. Unfortunately, someone handed me a full can.

Seriously. A while ago some guy (in IRC) needed me to translate a swear word into german. "Okay" said I, "which one?" He said he couldn't tell me because he doesn't swear. What did he need it for? Something he was writing.

However, I am with lolf on this one. If I could get my desired booze with out the side effects I would be perfectly happy.
Actually, it took me a long time of drinking to actually get drunk as I rarely have more than one beer, or equivalent, in a sitting.

Well, maybe you haven't considered the fact that some people actually like the taste of the drinks. Note that "alcohol diluted in a volume of juice/soft drink" does not make a cocktail. But then again, I'm someone who considers Corona as a horrible beer, and I can match (good) wines with most common dishes (insert French cliché here).
Just like 99.999999% of the world.
(It's not nice at all, just like all beer and lager.)
I do like a good wine though. I don't understand how anyone could like beer but not wine. wine at least tastes somewhat fruity and not like a rainbow of flavored piss.
