As for the OP... If real, I would guess some form of jellyfish which pulls itself in when dried. (And perhaps the explosion part is fake?)
I also would not be surprised if it was part of a viral promotion made by the Cloverfield movie folks, who have some mixed memes regarding soda, deep sea nodules, and people exploding.
