What about hanging from the ceiling, not wall, unable to move, and it folds its wing around and crouches into a little inconspicuous ball. Then flap button launches you in the direction of the cursor much faster than normal flying, like leap but in a straight line and even faster?
With some small delay to fold up for priming the launch, probably so it's an ambush ability and not people latching to ceiling and launching midfight, or maybe that is inconsequential.
1) if the lerk were to have a wall/ceiling perch it would be primarily an ambush ability. wouldn't be too useful if its energy was draining just sitting and waiting. I might be okay with reduced energy gain, but stopping it completely or draining it is a bad idea.
2) the lerk would need to be able to move around, however slowly, on the surface it's perching on. It would be silly to have to detach and flap around over and over to try and hit the spot you want to ambush from (say there are some pipes you want to use for cover, you need somewhat precise movement to get to that point without making yourself a target more than necessary) -- keep in mind this is not a movement ability, just something to help with positioning
3) it should be able to grip any surface. I don't understand why some people think it should be ceiling only.
4) I'm not worried about lerks spamming gas from a ceiling perch, it's easy enough to tell where the gas is coming from. If the marines are so occupied that they can't track down the source of the gas, the aliens are doing a good job.
dammit, I have too much free time on my hands, I'm back in I&S...

They could just remove the Lerks ability to gain energy while it is hanging in the ceiling.
