One of the great features of gloom was the fact that places in the map were very dark, requiring the humans to use flashlights. This created a scary atmosphere for the humans. Alas, too many people cheated by turning up their gamma (brightness) enough to make flashlights unnecessary. I would be all for such a feature, if I thought people wouldn't just tweak their video to do the same thing.
as great gloom was for its time it had even bigger flaws and inbalance than NS ever had.. i just loved the bio engineers heat vision goggles which made aliens totally glow red out in the dark, making them an impossible to miss target.. i think gloom is what happens if you let peoples who usualy suggest stuff here on the forum have their own quake2 mod..or something.. "this would be cool".."and that would be awesome", "i think this would be a nice thing to have", and "this game needs" turns into a cruel mixture of imersive game and absolute chaos and inbalance. it was awesome when i played it first... but the more i learned about the classes and weapons the less i liked it... it has no felt balance at all..and so from the 9 out of 10 rating it slipped down somewhere to ...4-6 , until i got fed up from looking for populated servers i always got disconnected from . awesome game for its time, very unique, but it made so much wrong.
damn.. now i want to play gloom again, to bad there are most propably no servers around anymore
oh..yeah, to stay on topic, i say nightvision is totaly out of place here, because NS is meant to be a dark enviroment, you would totally remove this gameplay feature which adds some grade of balance to it by adding NVG´s. its already bad with the gamma haxing eliteist "omg i have optimized my game to be a competitive player" , and they dont realize that this kinda ruins the base essence of what NS is meant to be, dark, claustrophobic, and handicapped by many different factors. you can be still a competitive player by playing the game like its meant to be played, but lately ive seen several posts about requests for features and stuff which should be removed to make the game more competitive... omg.. how much i hate that word competitive already.. competitive
competitive
competitive
its a friggen game.. i have my fun without being competitive...im a dumb little permagorge player which follows commander orders as marine and builds..welds stuff.. im into this game since it was released and i never optained any more skill since that as some of you guys i played with already know :p .. im a walker fade.. and can barely skulk-leap and bite at the same time, i stay the ###### away from being a lerk, and even the onos because i die way to often, and you know what? its still fun...
FUUUUUN´uh
i like the athmosphere of that game, dark and gritty, and being able to win the game with my team without having to be a competitive player, and just playing the support role..
competitive...i think thats what makes games like counterstrike so antisocial imo
I hate the flashlight... makes NS2 feel all WW2 style. Ya NS2 is a billion years into the future but the technology for contact-lens style nvgs still isn't possible???
Whenever i play on the bad clan server, i almost always use nvg mode and i think a lot of people do also. Nvg is how people have been playing NS1 for quite some time.
Night vision takes away from the advantages of the Kharra. Ditch the flashlight too, stick with ambient lighting and other methods of lighting. For instance, glowing alien blood splatter. If you hit him, a small area is now lit for a period of time, ie the vent he was sitting in.

Playing marine against things you can't see is NOT FUN.
I say nay to anything Night Vision. What many people don't realize is that when you introduce a superior vision or mode, then people will have to use that to play competitively. So what basically happens is that you would loose on all the nice textures only to play on a green filter instead of seeing the game how it actually is.
I've heard horror examples just recently of Batman: Arkham asylum with its 'detective-mode' that allows you to search for the Riddler's clues, and Wolfenstein where you get a superior-mode where you glide into the "gloom". Basically in order to have these kinds of "modes", there would have to be a downside so it makes the player have to switch between normal or the extraordinary-mode, otherwise it's nothing but annoyance and really makes all the work put into the graphics just useless.
It does make sense if you were actually in the game as a marine trying to survive to use night-vision goggles, but when you are playing it I think most of us would like to see the game for what it is, not a green filter. If we are to have some kind of detection in NS2, I really hope for the "meter"-suggestion or simply motion-tracking since that's what NS1 had.
How about this: For open areas, players use flashlights, mounted on helmets. Downside: aliens see it too. Upside: larger area of effect. You can see aliens coming at you from the sides
And ALSO give marines night vision- BUT- Downside: tunnel vision, or distortion at the edges. Maybe something else, like limited range on the sides and a bit more directly in front. Aliens approaching from the side might get the jump on you because of this. Upside: better for using in vents, or while sitting in a corner, being very quiet so no aliens come to chew your face off... until you switch on your flashlight and start gunning.
Mutually exclusive of course, turn on one, turn off the other.

Yeah the heavy armor can have these huge ass lights that illuminate everything.. .so it makes them impressive and the marines can have little maglights that suck.

a very new idea
I like the feel of the flashlight. Makes NS seem more gritty.

And I don't play on bad servers, I don't like the kind of (lets call them) players on it. But that is a different discussion.

Because nobody likes it when you are being raped by an alien and you cannot see anything, it is just frustrating and confusing. Not fun.
But at a distance the flashlight can not work very well.. so the guys who don't want flashlights in the first place will also be happy.

Yes I know, but that is roughly what the heavy Would look like.
More like a big human sized exoskeleton... I heard some dev say it.
