Squad leaders

Idea: Commander issued, xp gained (for alien) commander titles, maybe this player will glow or have an icon above their head. Mechanically this player would act like a beacon so that other players will be able to group together and utilize group tactics for some intense gameplay. there could be multiple squads and leaders roles within squads, possibly way points (used in junction with teleport mechanisms) or spawn options to reinforce squads. yup, and some chat options possibly to clear up chatter; like different push to talk buttons ie: squad chat and team chat. sound good?

    Sounds too complicated.

Keep in mind the size of the game... if you were talking 32-64 players in a game. SURE! But an average game that has 12 a side, assume 1-2 hang around base area as a bit of base defense, means 2 squads of 4-5 people.

How many "leaders" are you going to have in a 4person squad?

I think having a squad leader class would help a little, the squad leader would keep control of the marines, while the commander can resolve in only commanding the squad leaders, making his job a hell of alot easier.
Im running a NS team in some clan im in, and there ive assigned a few squad leaders, but they dont got any extra things or abilities then a normal marine.
So adding a squad leader sounds like a good idea for me atleast.

You got it Da worm! two squads of 4-5 players with one leader of course, and maybe a second in command in the case that he dies, if that's too complicated then ###### it, just a leader. Imagine a wave of 5 aliens clashing against a group of marines.

I think we're forgetting the way NS1 marines fight... i.e. throwing yourself at the enemy over and over in hopes of drowning the aliens with your blood.

In certain games, it's normal to prefer not to shoot your weapon because all it will do is tell the enemy where you are.

So if NS2 is anything like this, with standard lmg-marines standing no chance against fades+, then squad leaders will turn into one of those useless features... sort of like the "Follow Me" thing in NS1. And all those annoying big flashing beacons over someones head will accomplish is making it harder to spot the aliens that are attacking them.

So perhaps... the only way a squad leader would work in NS2 is that the squad leader is one of those commanders... not actually in the blood bath that is everything outside of the CC. Or perhaps the squad leader can always have a shotgun and a heavy, so that they live long enough to command his marines.

Ofcourse the problem overall is right now the most complex decisions a leader-in-the-field makes is "Should i knife that enemy RT", "Should i shoot that OC", "Should i build that TF", and "Should i hide under those stairs"

squads never worked in ns, counterstrike, or any FPS game.

they never have and never will. also, if you form squads, then that would mean the alien team can run around the map without a marine squad since marines are bunched together and aliens are spread out.

Your argument fell apart when everything you said was wrong.

NS1 already has a huge reliance on teammates grouping together (in squads). At the start of a round squad formation is static and after that it becomes dynamic. The ability to teleport back to your squad in NS2 will allow the initial squads to continue throughout the game. Whether or not this will make for a better game remains undecided but there WILL be squad based combat in NS2.

I think you are confusing marines for aliens. Marines fight by spawncamping.
