The Ambush

NS1 has the Gorge bait: a Skulk and Gorge can work together with the Gorge baiting a Marine into an ambush thinking he has an easy kill. It would be fun if there was more of this sort of gameplay, where you have to think strategically rather than just shoot everything that moves.

For example, a Gorge sets up some sort of alien thing that sticks to a wall. Every so often this thing gives out a sound like it's hurt, or it mimics the sounds of a Gorge or egg. Skulks sit and wait for the ambush while the Gorge goes off to slide around on its belly. The Gorge could even use it as self defense, setting one up so when chased it might get away from a marine who runs towards the sound instead of after the Gorge.

Another type of ambush could be to distract the marine and go after him instead of baiting him in. For example, infect the marine somehow with a type of parasite that gets into the marine's head and attempt to distract the player. It might create glimpses of movement in the peripheral vision of the player, or make the player hear the empty clip sound and think he has to reload. All sorts of possibilities. If it successfully distracts the player, the alien could simply wander over and chomp on the marine's butt.

    trippin bawls.

yeah what you said sounds cool, but honestly we'll never know until the gorge blog is posted.

haha cool - aliens really the hunters so bait and tackle gameplay is a must.

    this thread immediately sparked :
gorges setting up a fake illusion gorge which either follows them around and pretends to do gorge things or stands sits stationary but acts "alive".

This would immediately lower the marines into false sense of security, and thus lowering their guard.

It means the gorge if traveling alone, can use the fake gorge to confuse the marines as to which one is the real one, giving the real gorge some time to escape or defend itself
    or
A stationary gorge illusion would be the perfect bait, while a skulk/lerk watches from above or a vent.

when the fake gorge is attacked, it could also notify nearby alien players - make it a scouting tool
then perhaps real gorges to try to act fake, in the hope that the marines will walk past them, so that the marines do not trigger the fake gorge attacked alert

I like the idea of the Gorge setting up a "decoy" to put the Marine off, even more-so the parasiting ability to disorientate the marine hearing random sound and/or seeing something flicker around a corner.

I don't agree with gorge decoys or the causing hallucinations for the marines as being good multiplayer game mechanics as they seem like they would just affect newer players and once a player "got it" they would simply be able to ignore it and get on with normal play. I don't know many people that would be tricked by a reload sound for instance and a decoy gorge would be simply useless, both stood still and any AI babbler style options. They just seem like unnecessary barriers to entry.

A spin on this idea that I think has potential would be some sort of ability for the alien commander to create a decoy. We know the devs were throwing around the idea that the alien comm has control over glowies that could be detonated for a flashbang effect. If the alien commander had the ability to select these glowies and upgrade them to give them different abilities when they detonated (off the top of my head (for sc, dc and mc) flashbang, heal over time on a friendly structure and short catpack style speed increase for alien, things like that) then they would be forced into a gestating state. If this had the same noise as other alien eggs, it could be used as one of those "unintentional" extras that add depth to a game.

An example being gestating one in a node room that is currently uncapped behind some cover. Most marines would rush in and try and kill (what they assume to be) the gorge, opening up an ambush possibility for the rest of the team.

Another use would be blocking line of sight to a other more valuable alien team members by dropping one of these eggs in between them to take some bullets (like the famous EGGRUSH!!) kind of thing. Its a somewhat commonly used tactic in competitive games as it is but usually not viable unless youre willing to run around without an upgrade or take a net loss of resources for the team.

Making other players hallucinate = bad idea.

    Fake eggs would be viable.

dunno about hullicinations, but decoys would work rather well in a faced paced game, or in a chaotic battle when you don't have time to wait and see

There was that time where people were using spraypaints of eggs.

I've never liked the idea of a decoy ability just for the sake of decoy. In most games you can create makeshift decoys by creative baiting and building placement, could these be used in NS too? For example maybe some buildings could start building from an egg, only much more durable than a lifeform egg. At that point unbuilt structures could be used as a momentarily bait.

Either that or some of the things Mu mentioned. The alien comm could have a lot of potential for both intentional and makeshift decoys. For example casting a spell into a empty room to lure marine scouting is already a potential mechanic without any specific abilities mentioned.

A clarification: I didn't mean to suggest just "fake egging", I merely meant that as you upgrade the glowie to have one of these upgrades they would have to gestate to gain the upgrade like the current way of taking chamber upgrades.

I agree that the idea of decoys for the sake of decoys is not a good idea as it takes a lot of the skill out of effective baiting.

Empty eggs in hive would be nice :D *Marine kills empty egg on left and Onos comes out of egg on right* "######..."

ryknow, thats actualy how it was intended even for ns1 but was droped due to engine restrains. they aim to put it in now.

a fake gorge tho... why not. but it needs to be a physical entity like babblers. AI problem? no way, since it'll cost res to drop one.
