A hand grenade variant.
This is just a rough idea, but I figured what if the Marines could utilize a different hand grenade type aside of the standard explosive which could serve as both a defensive and offensive depending on the situation. Basically the grenade would be tossed and the resulting explosion will result in a moderate area being engulfed in flame for around 5-9 seconds to prevent structural damage to the area, so if a retreating individual needs to slow/halt a pursuing enemy he can do so with this to buy some time while he escapes.
Also I figured it could be used to purge pesky camping alien types in vents where they're out of reach via normal firearms and even standard explosive grenades, with a correct toss into the vent it could cause a high damaging wall of flame to travel down the vent duct for a fair distance, heavily damaging and killing any Skulk or Lurk too slow to escape to a safe distance.
It's probably best if it's fire damage differs to what class of alien is affected by it. The smaller types like Skulks and Lurks would take the most damage while the more heavier types would hardly notice any damage if they pass though it. Then again, if the grenade was made to explode on impact it could be used to cause moderate damage over time to a fade or Onos allowing a easier chance to bring it down with firearms, with that you'd be trading off covering a singular enemy in flame rather than a area, same would go to alien structures too.
Far as I can see it could be made available via researched in a armory either tier 1 or 2 type ( Depending really how effective it is ). And in Combat, made available perhaps as a next stage after unlocking the normal hand grenade type. And only one could be carried as opposed to the standard grenade.

After many deaths due to chuckling skulks and inability to flush them out as they hide around a corner in a vent and no GL / Grenade available or able to get them as they sit back just far enough. An incendary area effect device would be win! Esp if you had only two ways out of a vent... Co-ordinate fire at one end and someone jumping in the other with a HMG or similar high-damage lotsa ammo weapon and spray!!
Perhaps a limitation of who can carry it? IE: HAs cannot carry due to limited mobility in the thicker / heavier armor kind of thing, or maybe only HAs can have one (and has to be bought, not a freebie) being in Armor they can resist the fire damage from it like a Onos would resist it.
The drawbacks of this weapon would be if it was designated a friendly fire type, but really up to whoever has the brains to use it safely. Worse case scenario is that people will intentionally grief and probably set a player or spawn area alight followed by team-kills and much anger and nasty words being exchanged to one another. But well that's just the only Con I see with it's many Pros.

The same con has applied with any game any idiot players thinking it's Funny to do such a thing really.
That though would come down to server admins to manage their gaming community effectively. All-in-all, I do like this idea a lot!

So which of the 4 grenade designs would fit into the game, more or less distinguish itself from the standard explosive grenade ?
However usually you hold the top of the nade closer to the yourself so you can easily pull the pin.
Perhaps move the red markers to the top so at a quick glance you see red strips and go "oh, incendary didn't want this one JUST yet" *swap to normal grenade*
But that's why it has a quick expire time to counter it's damage base, after all it's a incindenary grenade designed to quickly flush an area with flame, then disperse. Else it's really not worth it if it's got an all-round low damage burn feature to all aliens and certainly useless trying to use the vent purge feature.
~~Sickle~~
Reason being the devs will of already done the hard work of making fire that burns like napalm, i.e. the flamethrower will hose an enemy and set it on fire for a period of time... so it makes sense to give all marines on the team a handheld version for when their are no flamethrowers researched.
Even if they added the ability to carry multiple weapons like a flamethrower and hmg (sort of like the movie Aliens where the guy with the smartgun also had a backup weapon... a flamethrower)... So ya even if we can do that... i'd still like the ability to throw those babies for a longer distance then the flamethrower... although it's probably more correct it doesn't throw that far at all... instead the flamethrower should have a long range flame (since it has to be a dedicated weapon all on its own to keep the user alive). In which case the fire grenade fills the role that thermite grenades do present day... i.e. destroying enemy equipment... like structures... or any walker fade :P
Only thing is it should not be a moltov... because what your describing is "direct hits" which implies explosion on impact... instead it should have a small blast radius and boom when it first goes off, and then it should burn for about a minute making some smoke in the process. And if an enemy is near it when it goes boom, then theirs a good chance they will catch fire and be running around on fire screeming and leaving a smoke trail... i look forward to laughing my ass off if someone throws one during a gorge rush :P
This might be one way the marines fight the infestation that grows into rooms... which is sort of a rip off of the movie green slime. I mean if we can't safely arm the entire team with flamethrowers and still fight fades and guerrillas, then we will need these burning-grenades.
The only thing is ... should it be more like thermite or more like napalm...

Hopefully the flamethrower isn't nerfed ###### that everyone hates you for using because you don't have the answer to all situation, the hmg... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBT_7l8yag8...feature=related
