Need help on LMG's redesign.

Vi3triceVi3trice Join Date: 2009-06-03 Member: 67663Members
So yeah, grass grows, birds fly, sun shines, and it's not fall yet. Just for the sake of it, I've been working on the good ol' LMG design. Although I ran through some issues...

<img src="http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/Vi3trice/LM3.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Green parts are placeholders, I already got something on my mind, but suggestions would be good.
Yellow parts need reworking.

I got no idea what to do with the magazine. I did a few variants and might do the original one too, but I feel that something needs to be changed. Also, with the nature of NS, the scope felt out of place. A sight might replace it or ironsights, give me your point of view on this... The handle is from an earlier FN-Scar model I made just to save time.

Anything?

    i don't really get what you're doing and why.
    isn't this more of a uwe department?

    I'm bored, and NS2's going to support custom content, right? I don't see what's wrong with making models. Unless you've got something against it.

    It might make sense to redesign the NEW LMG instead of the OLD LMG in case they make any significant changes to its operation. For example, they said something about a grenade launcher attachment; if that ends up being on the LMG, your redesign would have to incorporate that somehow.

    Well, we don't have much details about the new LMG anyway. I mean, the only artwork (that I know of) shows a vague paint over... I can actually see the grenade launcher and the broad design of it, but that's it. Could try something out, but I felt like doing something to put out my boredom.

    EDIT: Yeah, I'm losing my time, but it keeps my mood for NS2. There's not much to distinguish from the artwork too. If the final LMG is different from the art one, I'll be damned and really have lost time doing this. I do have the feeling that it's true since I already see some inconsistencies. I don't know where the hell the grenades are loaded from, nor that I can think of a way :/

    That's what I'm saying. We haven't seen the LMG yet, so it makes more sense to redesign it once you know what it's designed like in the first place.

    Hehe, how quickly people forget that NS1 had one of the biggest customization communities of any game.
    It was positively thriving, there were hundreds and hundreds of replacement models for everything from the gorge to the command seat.
    This was a major part of what made NS1 such a success, as the customization community was a pivitol part of the wider NS community.

    So, expect to see alot of people making x^1000 different models, textures (colours, reskins) even animations for each and every asset in NS2 after it's released. And what's stopping people getting into the swing of things even before then <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> Modeling is fun, and it occassionally pops up with some awesome concepts!

    @Vi3trice

    I really like that first one you posted, looks great <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
    Just wondering though (little bit of constructive criticism), how are the mags on the side attached, but for the middle one it seems as if they're just floating there.
    Also, isn't one of those protrusions a grip? How do you foresee the weapon will be held?

    Love the modeling though, it's spurred me on to find a decent 3dsm replacement on my MBP finally. Might give modo a try.

    When I use this LMG do I get 3x the ammo? It would be unrealistic and stupid otherwise.

    A double barreled LMG just appeared in my mind, and I am suddenly happier.
  • Vi3triceVi3trice Join Date: 2009-06-03 Member: 67663Members
    @ Windburn & homocide

    For the mag, it's just that the 2 variants are visible next to the base one. Maybe I should of just rendered it with only one displayed...

    <img src="http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/Vi3trice/LM2.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    As for the protrusion/grip, I don't understand your question :/

    @ FrostFire626

    The HMG has 2 barrel. The LMG with 2 barrels? That just sounds made of win right there. What did Serious Sam say when he picks up the coach gun? "Double your gun, double your fun!"

    Calm down Tycho he's only trying to get in the mood!

    I'd recommend you re-design the current one for the current version of NS. So make a lo-poly and a hi-poly version; this way if your redesign can be encorporated to NS2 then you got a placeholder waiting and you haven't wasted any time, as you've also contributed to the NS1 custom content scene <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

    Given that details on the new weapons are sparse, why not build a "classic" set, based on the NS1 weapons? i.e. higher-poly versions of the old weapons to be used in NS2. I'm sure people would be interested in that, although you'd probably have to make a few adjustments when we know more about the weapons' function.

    take what we find familiar with NS1's LMG and go bullpup with with.

    When I saw the Original Post I thought you where going for that 3-clips tied together things that sometimes people use to have quicker reloads. Anyway I glad you didn't because I didn't like it on that render.

    And yeah do whatever you want, just make sure you're not wasting your time. If you want to make it just for NS2 then be ready to have to make adjustments later or offer it as a higher poly/res classic weapon model for anyone trying to build NS1 into the NS2 engine.

    Also the suggestion about getting out there and experiencing the world is one to consider if you can. After all there may be many things out there that you won't see for a while once NS2 is released. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

    Also, 3 mags strapped together? I've seen 2, but 3? ######.

    I've seen 2 a bunch of times too. I know I've seen 3 also before in reals guns. I though it was like the HK G3 but then I found a pic of the "G36C with 3 magazines clamped together". However its just another example and not what I've seen before.

    If the LMG in NS2 fires more than 1 grenade, I'm screwed.

    I like your grenade launcher concept. Does that first render show the open-for-reload position?

    Also I like the side clip option better, but since you moved the barrel higher you should also move the clip to the save level.
  • Vi3triceVi3trice Join Date: 2009-06-03 Member: 67663Members
    Yeah it's the open position.

    <img src="http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/Vi3trice/LM10-s.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    I'm thinking of something for the upper part of the hand guard...

    If im correct th lmg and shotgun both will have some attachements, as for the old mockup photos also included that those weapons would have some attachements, cant be sure how correct these are nowdays because these are handmade anyway check the photo <a href="http://amo.miumau.net/amo/files/5612/4393/9877/ns2_buymenu.jpg" target="_blank">http://amo.miumau.net/amo/files/5612/4393/...ns2_buymenu.jpg</a>

    I do like the side clip better, though not sure why exactly. Perhaps it's because I imagine a grenade launcher to be less like a conventional rifle with the clip underneath?

    Anyway, nice work so far. I think the smoothness of the angles adds a lot. Reminds me that we're not playing quake anymore with gun models which used less than 20 polys. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    If I may propose an idea, though don't know how viable it would be. Would be neat to design the grenade launcher like it had some serious kickback with a gun brace built right onto the model's shoulder designed to support the gun to fire upwards at a 45 degree angle where when the weapon is fired, it is pointed upwards and kept in the brace. I know it isn't viable now that I think about it, but hey, a guy can dream can't he?

    I'm not to much of a Fan of the "classic disposable Rifle" Design.

    I'd prefer Multifunctional Weapons (as in Pistol-LMG-Grenade Hybrid) mounted to Armshins or something like that.
  • Vi3triceVi3trice Join Date: 2009-06-03 Member: 67663Members
    @Hawkeye

    What do you mean by gun brace? (I googled it, I only see patents with no figures :/)

    @RobB

    Arm shins? I'd be easier to me to do the multi-functional design alone than with a shin guard-mounted design...
