    Hmmm... not sure how much I'll be on but if anyone wants to they can add me with my name :p

    While the UI is iffy I'd still quite happily play the game. I pre-ordered it already anyhoo :3

    I'm sorta looking forward to the single player... I've always found the idea of playing against a human player in RTS stuff kinda intimidating... I don't take it very seriously but for a lot of people it's SERIOUS BUSINESS :p
    I kinda see me playing online against another player being somewhat like a serious 40k player against someone who has tea-parties with their models and plays with them like dolls... the other person being the 40k enthusiast of course :p

    In a game with me and a friend vs AI I pretty much spent the whole match making tunnels everywhere with my ravager just because it was fun... I think the only reallly useful aspect of my play for my teammate was that I at least tied up the enemy on my 'lane' of the map with my antics, well, most of the time at least :s

There didn't seem to be much cooldown time really, and if it's based on zeal points (earnt in battle), surely it just pays for itself as long as you deploy it wisely.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    I think that skill- powerful though it is- is really what makes the apoth useful. Otherwise he's not that good (apart from early game as he's useful to rambo cap points (his heal makes him a good tank and as long as you don't get suppressed by an MG unit he doesn't have to worry about dying)).

    Like you said- it looks imba but without knowing the other heroes it's not fair to say that. I played a phenomonaly enjoyable 3v3 public game yesterday where we ended up winning with 7 points remaining. It was the map where the eastern side is slightly elongated, I spawned on that flank and held my own until my opposite number teamed up with his mate holding the middle and rushed me out of the victory point. I couldn't retaliate on my own so held what I had and planned on an anti-vehicle fight in the next few minutes. I gave my Eldar Warp Spider the teleport boost and anti-vehicle melee upgrades and it was incredibly satisfying when it all came together. I used a Wraithlord with the regen upgrade to get the attentions of the 3 siege tanks trying to completely take my flank then teleported the Warp Spider to do rear armour damage to the siege tanks- fragging the lot of them. In the mean time I sent an Avatar to the middle of the map to help retake that one.

    One hero killing 3 tier 3 units together seems pretty overpowered to me just as the apoth invul skill seems imba to others. Every hero used correctly is damned powerful- it's just that the apoth invul skill is so obvious that it seems imba.

    Listened to 2 of your shoutcasts Tycho, not bad but you get a bit carried away with the Joss Whedonisms.

    Anyway, you were wondering aloud what Termagant and Hormagaunt meant:

    <b>Horma</b> from the same root as 'hormone', from the Greek <i>horma</i>, meaning "to excite, set in motion" / <b>gaunt</b> from the English, meaning "extremely thin and bony; haggard and drawn, as from great hunger, weariness, or torture; emaciated"

    <b>Terma</b> from the same roots as termite, from the Latin <i>terere</i> "to rub, wear, erode" / and <b>gant</b>, possibly a degraded form of <i>gaunt</i>, or possibly from the same etymology of the French <i>gant</i>, meaning "glove".

    What is a Joss Whedonism? I saw Firefly a thousand times, so I can understand where that might come from, but I don't recall slipping into Chinese to curse or anything.

    You go to your documents folder -> my games -> Dow2 beta -> playback and rename the temp.rec to something else. The temp.rec is the latest game you have played.

    I've tried Space Marines (Force Commander, Apothecary), Eldar (Warlock, Warp Spider Exarch, Farseer) and Tyranids (Lictor Alpha). I found Tyranids easiest to use because they are so fast and cheap most people don't know how to deal with their swarms, even if they do die pretty easily. And nobody really tries to tie up the Termagants so they stop debuffing the enemy's units. Plus because you have so many units most people just ###### themselves instead of laying down suppressive fire.

    Eldar are fun but too much of a compromise between mobility and fragility for my limited skillset. I think the mistake I made was trying to use the units on their own, which you can't really do with Eldar or they get decimated very quickly. I might give them a bit more of a chance, since I know it's mostly me just being crap.

    Space Marines are fairly dependable, but you really can't afford to lose any units because of their cost. A good team for me because I'm not an ADHD kid flipping round all my units constantly, so I tend to leave them alone for short periods. Marines will usually be able to make it out alive if they get ambushed and I catch it in time, other races wouldn't really stand a chance.

    I'm still trying to work out the best build orders, but I almost always find myself teching to tier 2 for Marines early on to make the Tactical squads worth their 500 req. I don't really see any point in them otherwise, or am I missing something?

    I have been playing around with the Tyranids' Ravener commander. The tunnel system you can set up is awesome for getting your troops on the field, but also retreating them faster to the base. Also, if you get his melee upgrades, and the melee damage synapse, a couple of warrior brood and some gaunts. Instant traveling dead.

    Nope, tacs are pretty crap atm.

    What I do with the apothecary is the following:

    In a 3vs3:

    Send out scouts and apoth seperately to cap.
    Build a devestator squad and put it to good use. (Preferable in a building)
    Fortifie an energy cap and build 3 generators.
    Build 1 Assault Marine Squad.
    Tech Shotguns.
    Tech Tier2.
    Tech Assault Marines upgrades.
    Tech Squad leader for the Scouts.
    Pump out 1 Dreadnaught.
    Build another 3 generators if necessary.
    Bolter upgrade for the apoth.
    Pump out another Dreadnaught.
    Tech Tier 3
    Health Upgrade for the Dreadnaughts.
    Get Razorback and Terminators.

    Well I think we can well and truly consider the 'matchmaker' for ranked games a big pile of poop.

    My first 1v1 ranked match put me (rank 1) up against a rank 19, who ######ed all over me. My next one was I think a rank 12, then I had a few against 5 or lower.

    Now I'm rank 4 and I just got my ass whooped by a rank 24 player. But hang on, his name sounds familiar, doesn't it? Goldradaer. Hmm. Yes, it seems the matchmaker decided it wanted me to play a seasoned Company of Heroes veteran who already massively outranks me on DoW 2. <a href="http://www.wegame.com/watch/12azor_vs_Golradaer/" target="_blank">The guy from the first vid</a> Tycho posted. Yeah, him.

    My only consolation is that I managed to kill his dreadnought, but by then he didn't really care as he mowed it into my base and sat on my face with all three VPs ticking down. Well played by him, but I wouldn't expect anything less from a CoH vet versus someone whose last RTS multiplayer game before DoW2 was Red Alert.

    WTF is the point of having a ranking system if the upper ranks are forced to stomp newbies while the lower ranks get ripped a new one most of the goddamn time? This is honestly the worst matchmaking system I've ever seen. It would at least be nice if it told you the rank/name of the person you were about to play to give you time to leave the game in time, but it can't even do that. It lies by pretending to find you a match that suits your skill bracket and ping (can't do either of those right), and won't tell you anything about this mystery murderer until you're scraping yourself back off the floor in the postgame lobby. There's no pre-game lobby, no, that would be too considerate.

    ---

    When it has worked (seemingly the result of particles colliding randomly) and I'm paired up with someone roughly my skill bracket, I have some close wins and losses. My favourite one was winning a game by 2 VP points (that's 2, out of 500) having scraped it back from a 400-100 defecit.

    Also: the power of melee ravener with warrior and gaunt brood.

    Crispy, the automatch system gets less and less strict as fewer people play; if it can only find Golraeder, that's who it will match you against. If it can find someone who sucks more (like me), then it'll stick us together.

    Matches Found: 8
    Possible Matches: 5

    Are you trying to tell me that out of all those possibilities, the best it could come up with was a rank 24? There wasn't anyone lower than rank 24 playing, all of them were higher? Considering the highest ranks I've seen on the leaderboard are around the 32 mark, and considering the Beta is not that long in, I find that hard to believe.

    Yea the matchmaking is a bit funky at the mo.

    As for tactics, IMO, DoW2 is about power nodes, <b>power nodes</b> and <b><u>power nodes</b></u>.

    Sure req points and VPs are nice, but you can cap them in a few seconds. Power nodes, as a rule of thumb, grants you tier 2, vehicles, cloak in one form or another, war gear and squad leaders. Of uber importance is that you can build on them- at tier 1, only melee units can realistically take them down- and even then it'd take a while.

    After a few games I've shifted my focus from VP rushing to power node rushing. Using the Eldar Warp Spider's teleport ability I can get to them before anyone else. It costs me early units (I only build a shuriken at the start) but I can get the anti-infantry wargear for my Warp Spider pretty quickly.

    <a href="http://www.gamereplays.org/dawnofwar2/replays.php?game=47&tab=upcoming&show=details&id=67252" target="_blank">Pretty nice demo here</a>, some good micro early on to beat my opposite number and claim the power nodes.

    I'm "JimboENG"

    To view, place in "C:\Documents and Settings\YOU\My Documents\My Games\Dawn of War 2 Demo\Playback", load up DoW2, go to game history, DOUBLE CLICK THE DEMO FILE (name may be blank but you can still see it). Don't click "play demo" it won't work- just double click it.

    P.S. I don't pretend I'm anything other than low skilled.

    Is it just me or does anyone else see repeated parallels between warcraft and starcraft?

    Ork = Orc
    Tyranids = Zergs
    Termagaunt Brood = Zerglings
    Warriors = Hydralisks
    Ravener Brood = Mutalisks
    Eldar = Protoss
    Guardian Squad = Zealots

    Ok, kind of hard to completely avoid coincidences, but come on...

    Santa Claus- feature <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> . Yeah, the venom cannon looks pretty mad. I had no idea, since I don't think I've seen it in action. I've also won a 1v1 game versus Bore And Yawn <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> . I happen to remember this because he was so bad manner. For some reason he quit before the game was even 'decided' and then pursued me to a lobby, shouting "bg" and "###### game".

    My favourite combo as Space Marines is assault rines and Apotechary with the Sanguine Chainsword (life steal), Combat Stimulants (used on Assault Rines) and the gear that damages surrounding enemies when I cast Heal. They can tie up (and kill) enemy infantry very effectively. The Apoth heals itself by attacking enemies and deals aoe damage to surrounding enemies while he heals the assault rines. There will propably be scouts with shotties and a HB squad nearby which really put the enemies between a rock and a hard place. Usually this works pretty well, unless the enemy has some awesome firepower or vehicles/walkers around.

    So far I like this game very much, especially the team games. I hope they manage to fix and balance it well enough. And I also need a better puter to run it. Right now I have all settings on minimum and it still works slow-ish. Especially in the late game when there's all sorts of slimy things creeping on the battlefield <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> .

    apparently there's been the nerf stick on the Eldar.

    Unfortunately, I can't get Games for Windows to download my profile, so I haven't had a chance to play it. Yes, I tried having the client open (it's updated), opened all the ports, stupid thing still doesn't work. And others on my router have gotten it to work. =[

    Tyranids are kinda blegh ATM.

    Between the resource increase, supression nerf and venom cannon buff/bug I really struggle to handle them at all in 3 vs. 3s. Got to work so much harder to stop them its not funny.
