Shouldn't the game run if you have all the HL1 files?

From what I understand in order to launch NS, it needs HL 1 files to use. So shouldn't the game still work even if you don't have HL 1 bought but you have all the necessary files loaded in the steam folder?
You are not trying to access HL1 to play, you are accessing Natural Selection, which requires HL1 files, and which should just use them if they are all there in the steam folder, therefore launching the game.

Or am I missing something?

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

    When launching NS, you are launching a modified version of Half-Life. Steam won't allow you to launch a game you don't own. So without owning HL1 you can't play NS.

    Even so, I would expect the NS executable to appear in steam after installing NS correctly, yet it dosen't.

    The only supported way is purchasing Half-Life through steam.

    There is no NS executable.
    You launch hl.exe -applaunch <i always forget the mod id>

    It dosen't matter, Valve made my day with 1$ half life offer.

    I'm comming back after 5 years. Ahhh, I still remember NS 1.04...
