Post pics or descriptions of the knife you'd take, and then say why.

this pose may bring up knife model ideas or may just be fun.

p.s. this is not a knife

shark knife: serrated so it will tear flesh, plus the notch in the back for added alien flesh tearrage, plus it comes with a clamp-in case for easy accessibility.

I don't know why in the future you would still have just a normal everyday kitchen knife with a cool design on it. Make it a lazer knife =>

I'm kinda a fan of a vibroblade. No renders, sry. I think Evangelion had some special combat knife that looked cool too. Then again, it was for a GIANT MECHA.

A combat knive has to be quickly accessible when needed and also be useable in a vent, so I dont think a machete will fit in NS2. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/siege.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::siege::" border="0" alt="siege.gif" />

well does a knife really does that much sense ?? expectet for saving ammo kniving down a res tower ?
so against live forms ive just very very rarely seen knive kills cuz of you are in meele range you are dead?

so go away from a knive if you REALLY would be this marine fighting hungry fast and deadly aliens what kind of last weapon would you carry ?? a damn knive <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" /> in the future ? what about some thing like a short range (meelerange) electro shocker that smokes them up or a knivelike chainsaw like thing that has more power to cut them in 2 pieces and what has come the good old fashioned way of turning around the rifle and try to stomp them with the rifle stick (i could imagine this hurts with a HMG that weights 12 punds, enough to crush some skulk bones)

otherwise if you want to stick to a knive than fit it into the armor that it jumps out of the wrist like in assasins creed but a bit more scifi. and i think a knive that should just hurt and kill biological stuff should have lots of teeth to rip trough flesh

    Ok,...
A Knife is primarily a tool, not a weapon. A good knife can be used in a lot of different ways, using it a a weapon is just one of them. It totally makes sense that Marines carry one around, you never know when you need one. (same goes for the good old army spade wich has quite a reputation in our Army for being a weapon more than a tool, but that's another story and spades would look weird in NS universe I think <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />)

In the Austrian Army the gear a soldier carries on a mission is devided into three "lines" that get dropped and left behind depending on the situation; to become more mobile/agile and so on. The "first line" represents the bare minimum a soldier carries with him after dropping the third and second line - the Knife is part of it.

Although the knife is more a tool than a weapon a solider might get into a situation where he has to use it to defend himself, the design would pay attention to that. A fixed/stationary blade (no time loss while opening the knife), a pointy head of the blade, not too short, small weight, high durability, black (so it doesn't refelct light... though I think a black blade would look odd in a computer game for some reason).

If I had to chose a knife to take with me as TSA I'd either take the German ACK (Advanced Combat Knife) or the Kampfmesser 2000 (also German) for they are very versatile and also "feel" right.

of course i agree that a knive if usefull for soldiers and i could imagine any army today without one but were talking about anno domini what ever so in 3400 ad would they really still use knives as meele weapon to fight fast small and biting aliens with carapace <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />?

i dont think so , if this would be real and i am a marine i would better run away when out of ammo than facing a skulk fade or onos with a loosly knive in my hand, you need to be insane to fight some of those beasts with a knive when you life is the price

fighting humans or "normal" animals with knives should be ok but no aliens faster and more dangerous than any animal we have on earth
  • Lord SchnitzelLord Schnitzel Join Date: 2008-11-04 Member: 65377Members
I think that quote fighting quote "Aliens faster and more dangerous than any animal we have" actually is a good point FOR the Knife. You cannot run, you cannot hide (nto after you fired your whole magazine that is) so what do you do? The last itty bitty small chance you'd have is to pull out your knife and try to take that thing to hell with you.

i never said we dont need a melee weapon, of course ns needs a melee weapon otherwise a marine without ammo is 100% dead instead of 99% when having a "knife" but does it has to be a knife in the future ? a piece of metal to stick <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" /> cant we maybe agree that it should be some kind of more futurelike ? maybe a shocknife with 30kilo volts or a metal knife with a laser blade or a knife thats is in the armor comes out of the hand /arm ? i just think that a normal knife would be way to old for a game that deals with jetpacks and nanites facing aliens on space stations

imagine what the knife has gone for a way scince it was used first time by humans ? a piece of metal became a tool/weapon made out of different metals sharped till it can cut paper or velvet so why should development stop at the knife, we have futere stuff weverywhere we look but knifes have to be the same way as they are today thats out of place i think

i wanted to say I DONT WANT TO FACE A SKLULK WITH TODAYS KNIFES with some kind of beter future knifes yes but it hanst to be a knife just a melee weapon that fits in time and place

I think todays combat knifes are pretty much the limit design wise. The current improvements are (as far is I know from my time in the military... but that's a couple of years ago) mainly on the side of new materials to make it sharper, lighter, more durable. Knifes have been outfitted with different "tools" to make it more useful to the soldiers.

However this is a thing that can be more or less ignored when it comes to NS. In NS the only way to use you Knife will be combat (the "tool functions" will likely be fulfilled by the welder). I think the TSA would use better materials, but would that effect the look? maybe a little, but i doubt it would make much of a difference to todays steel/ceramic knifes optically. Then there's the "vibro blades". Nice idea, but ultrasonic vibration would not be visible, would it? Maybe a slight glow around the blade? However a vibro blade would have to be turned on (or you wouldn't safely store it while not in use) and it qould use some power source. The last aspect makes it a bad choice in my eyes. A knife is something that should be useable in pretty much every cicumstance.. you "good old trusty knife" as it's sometimes called. So it should be independant of power sources or built-in electronics. Keep it simple. A handle, a blade... use the best material available and you're done.

So... while I DO understand why one would like to see a more futuristic type of knife I think that - if we want to stay away from laser knifes and other "high-sci-fi"-stuff like that, the current combat knifes pretty much represent the future.

    Regards
    Schnitzel

Imagine you're Marine walking down a corridor. Now a Skulk just leaps out of a vent, jumps on you and (you are on the ground) starts to rip out you intestines. You got no ammo neither room to use you lmg, what would to do?

Take out the good old knive and cut the ######'s throat, that is what I would do. The knive has to be kept simple which also keeps reacting to this melee situation simple but fast.

Of course the knive is the last weapon of choice, but also the last hope when the ammo runs out.

not as efficient as the one MarcusAurelius posted, but still it's sexy

    I wouldn't stand a chance vs an alien with carapace, but at least I would die with honour <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

NS2 could use a knife, not really to have killing aliens in mind, but as a ammo-saver when getting rid of chambers, resource towers etc.
anyway, all my most memorable multikill moments in NS do include some random lucky knife frag <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> can't imagine NS2 without one!
