Newbies,please Do Not Be Commander.

In your first few tries that is.......
Look eventually you would probably want to try out the commander mode.BE WARNED.If you have slow reactions, are playing in a server where the language is ENGLISH and your english is less than uh....understandable or you are a first time newbie and doesnt know how to play....COMMANDER CONSOLE IS NOT FOR YOU!

Lets see why its not for you :

1.Slow reactions. As a commander you must be able to repond fast.Sometimes it can get pretty hetic, someone in your base wants armor, hmg and welder,an assault time at a hive location needs ammo and medpacks AND seige turrets, your base at a hive location is under attack AND theres a lerk in the base vent playing with your turrets. You need to repsond to threats FAST.If you are slow, marines will lose unless the alien team refuses to use any teamwork whatsoever,in which case theres a 5% chance a gorg wont get the 2nd hive before you take and hold 2 hives.

2.If your english standard is poor(as in "what is the meaning of funny?")and you are playing in a server where the majority speak english...you really shouldnt be commander. The commander needs to communicate with his team, order them to take a hive location or some such.Waypoints can be done to a certain extent, but when people start asking for ammo, medpacks and guns....and you do not understand them.....oopsie another marine loss.In fact, you shouldnt be playing on that server at all!You should be playing in a local server!(NS is popular enough...trust me....i should know.)

3.If you are a first time newbie and you dont know how to play, you should not be commadner. You would not know what to do,would not know what your team needs, would not have a basic strategy in mind, etc.Play as a normal soldier for a while, read the manuel, read the tool tips, dont bombard your teammates with "how do i get ammo???" questions. That way,you will know what your team needs,no more "uh you mean you need an armory to get ammo?) situations, that will get you ejected pretty quickly.Next, create a lan game or join a commander training server, theres a few scatter all over the globe that will let you try comamnding real players,on a real server, and the admin will usually help you by pointing out wrong turret placements, etc.

I totally agree with you dude, I got in trouble on the forums for telling someone he was wrong when he said that people should respect newbie commanders, some of these people just need ot practice with bots.

OK, so newbie[I] players[I] shouldn't be a commander but once someone ha played half a dozen games of NS and read the manual they've got the basics and I see no harm in letting them command (for a while). OK so you might loose, but it might also help the marines work as a team. Almost as important to the marines as a good commander are good troops who will point out to the commander whats needed rather than sitting about waiting for orders - or worse running of on their own personal mission to save the world

A commander has to start somewhere, and on a quiet server at the beggining of a small (friendly) game is an ideal time. I'd encourage all players to play commander at some point as it's an important part of the game. You need to experience it to appreciate whats going on, so in turn it makes you a better soldier, more willing to follow orders and work in the team.

Every commander has a first time - mine was a 30 second disaster, bt I learnt a lot. The following time I was just naff, and now after much hard work I reached a standard of incompetence not often seen on ublic servers.

Having said that- I've still won a few games as marine. It's all down to teamwork, newbies should be encouraged. Especially if the marines team is strong.

imho: The best time for newbie commanders is at the beggining of a 4-8 player game with a supportive and experienced team behind them - but they must be ready to log out if things get too busy for them.

At least try to have a general idea of what you are doing before you command. Don't spend 5 minutes sitting there figuring out how to build an infantry portal. Know what the buildings look like, and what they do. Know how the command interface works. Get a general idea for the techtree. All this is in the manual, or avliable in guids from front. strat forum, or planetNS.com. If you need to, make a LAN game, turn on dev mode, and explore the command interface... make some nodes, hop out, build them, and experement with what you can make. And don't ask the commander to vacate his chair so "you can have a chance". Wait for the new game, or for him to be ejected. It's generally in bad taste to ask a commander to leave the chair.

Just make sure you know how to build an infantry portal before you try commanding! :x

first time i was commander i got alot of complements and thats only after 2 days after it was out, so if u want to be commander read that help post and u will be fine , if your not up to it then u will be kicked from being commander , and can get on with a good game of killing some bad dudes .
there are 100's of games of NS played so 1 game wont matter much if you lose and you do get alot of experance from your first time.

best tip u can have is .... when some1 asks for somthing tell them to call for ammo on there radio (right click , then right and right again) then press you space abr at it takes you too them

I played as commander today twice for the first time. First time, we were winning until server died...? and Second time, some one nice (not you all) lead me through the map, and we won easily (11vs11). In fact, I dominated the map with equipment. Don't be arses, freakn' teach someone, I promise there's plenty of servers to choose from.

I had the pleasure of training some one in the command pod today. Four on the map, two each side - at the beggining and the commander was obviously new to the game not just the command pod but we got a well defended base down and a second base on the way. After about ten minutes he was pre-empting my needs and placing things in strategically respectable places.
Then while I was tryting to take out the alien hive on my own his mum said he had to go This left me 1 against 3 for a while and by the time another joined the marines it was nearly impossible to get to any of the hives as there were now 3 and a full compliment of OT in the way. We didn't loose because the server crashed to be honest the aliens were playing very defensively so we might have been able to turn it around... we had hmg and 500rp because I could keep up with them on my own

It was a fulfilling experience giving a new commader the first look into a different world! Next time you see a newbie see it as an opportunity to train, not torment. Unless he's on the oppositions side

yea, I agree, I have decent reaction speed, but its not as good as others. The problem is everyone is gonna be a new commander sooner or later...so you have to give the new commanders time to learn also. But good post!

My first day as commander, I was mistaken for a playtester.

People can pick it up off the bat, it just takes a bit of skill, and framiliartiy with RTS's.

Besides someone coming out and say it is his/her first time commanding... Why do players constantly call people newbies when the mod is only about a month old? Soon it will be like CS, people jumping around with pistols calling each other "noobs" and using really dumb sayings, "l33t" and "woot."

    Wayne and Garth
    - "Are you mental" "Live in the now"

oh man, that cracked me up....

While I"m at it... Everyone is calling each other newbies, noobs, fags, **obscenity**, saying "**obscenity** you", etc.. You know, my dad tried to play this game, but has to listen to 14 yrs. call him "noob". Why don't you annoying little kids go play Sim Ants or Sim Tycoon... lol.

All I have to say is if your new to the game the best thing to do is set up a Lan and practice Commanding. You can also do a little reading because there is a wealth of information on these pages. I believe everyone should at least try to command at least once then you know how much pressure it is.

Also don't run around calling people noobs. That has got to be the most retarded thing a person can say. It really reflects how you are in real life...an idiot.

i agree all newbies shouldnt be commander because commander spot is a spot for more experienced players, but if you are a newbie try playing as a marine a bit so you know about how to build the buildings then make your on game on lan and play commander on your own so you know what buildings are for what and where resource nodes are, how much certab things are.
