K, i just moved into uni and when I try to find servers... 1, 2, or nothing comes up.

It seems i have this with all steam games, CS only returns like 20 results, different servers every time, so i figure it's just chance.
Very often when i try to connect to the ones it finds, it cant. It keeps retrying connection until it realizes it t/o'd

Any way i can fix this?

ps: i win the award for biggest lurker mirite?

    Same thing is happening to me.

    It could have something to do with this

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->October 22, 2008 - Half-life 1 Engine Update Released

    A new set of Steamworks features have been released for all Half-Life 1 engine multiplayer games: Counter-Strike 1.6, Condition Zero, Team Fortress Classic, Deathmatch Classic, Ricochet, Day of Defeat and Half-life 1 Deathmatch. The update includes Steamworks features such as player avatars in the scoreboard when playing Counter-Strike and Condition Zero. The update also contains several bug fixes, listed below. Note that this update will require all game servers to restart.

    Bug Fixes

    Removed the need to manually re-login and re-authenticate to Steam while in game
    Fixed a crash on startup when running windowed with a non-standard desktop resolution
    Removed the display of saytext (in-game chat text) from players whom you've blocked in Steam friends
    Locked down several engine cvars to prevent malicious script exploits
    Enforced file consistency on several sprites in Counter-Strike
    Removed "ex_extrapmax" cvar (no longer needed)

    Server

    Added "-noaff" command-line option to disable setting of thread affinity
    Added "bannedcfg" cvar so admins can choose which file is written to by the "writeid" command<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Yeah I am having the same issue since Steam patched today.

    "The server is using an older protocol(47) than your protocol(48) if you think the server may be out of date, contact the server administrator"

    GG Valve you win, NS loses. All my steam games are currently screwed. Is anyone able to play any steam games?

    I run a NS server.
    I have tried to update and it keeps giving the error. Valve FTW!

    I tried restarting my (linux) server. That didn't work.

    I tried manually updating. That didn't work.

    I tried reinstalling hlds from scratch (ie installing the valve "game" that mods use). That didn't work.

    I tried installing cstrike just for the hell of it. This got my server showing up on the steam server browser, but when I connect I get "steam validation error". Sooooo that didn't work either.

    Currently listen servers are working and this problem is not specific to NS. It is affecting other 3rd party goldsrc (HL1) mods.

    Figured it out.

    Ok, while I've figured out how to get it to work, we have one HUGE problem.

    Marines (no one on aliens that I noticed) crashes when someone logs in or out of the comm chair. It happens to about 90% of the marines and it is VERY consistent. Sorry Flayra, but you're going to have to release an update to NS1.

    We had absolutely no problems on combat (but wtf wants to actually play combat?).

    I dunno if it's the right thing to do, if it's the appropriate thing to do, or if it'll break other stuff, but if you edit

    <b><wherever hlds is on your server>\steam_appid.txt</b>

    and change it from 60 to 70, it works again. I only run a NS server, so I don't really care if it breaks other mods.

    I don't even know if it'll fix the problem for other people. Just posting what worked for me.

    As a member of the NS community, and of the NS BAD Clan I ask that you all come up with some kind of solution to this problem if it be within your capacity. I am saddened that NS has been jipped with an update for Half-Life and other games that run off the same engine. Why Valve has decided to give out an update for an almost 10 year old game engine is beyond me. All it does is screw over the games that have already been around forever, and only adds stress to the already struggling communities.

    I once again ask and stress that you come up with a solution if possible. If no solution is created then I gravely fear that the NS community will die out, which gives us NS players quite a sum of time on our hands while we patiently wait for NS2.

    God speed.

    Hmm. I'm not sure what's going on but I really hope we don't need to release a client patch.

    If anyone learns anything else about this please post on the forums as I'll be checking them a lot.

    I'm going to write an amxx plugin to monitor some of the messages that are sent during classic games to see if I can figure out what it is. My suspicion is that it has to do with the commander's name being sent to the marines.

    The reason is that marines tend to crash very shortly after the comm gets into or out of the chair.

    And yes, I'm pretty sure you're going to have to release a client patch, unless valve is going to make whatever they did for this new patch off by default.

    We've identified the issue and it looks like the problem is due to some changes in the engine API. We've seen issues like this before and valve are always really helpful in fixing them, so fingers crossed.

    We found out how to make yourself invulnerable to the commander crash. Btw we've been doing a ton of tests today. For about 4 hours solid. We have probably every test case figured out.

    If you get in the comm chair your teammates crash, if you get out of the comm chair by some method other than f4, then you crash. I believe this is related to the ScoreInfo msg, but not positive.

    Now to the important part:

    You can make yourself invulerable to the crash by disabling steam overlay from functioning in game.

    After some trial and error (and waiting for Steam to realize they forgot the Linux folk) we got the Jigglyroom back up. Seems to show in the browser just fine at this moment.

    <!--QuoteBegin-"Flayra"+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE("Flayra")</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Hmm. I'm not sure what's going on but I really hope we don't need to release a client patch.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    I guess we don't need a patch *yet* - but if Steam insists on making sweeping changes to GoldSrc for no apparent reason, I can only hope that you and the crew are around to rescue us. Several of my favorite obscure mods died with this update. I'm afraid NS days are numbered too - less so because it's so popular, but the foundation is already developing cracks.

    I really don't understand why there's a protocol change at all, but what <i>truly</i> boggles my mind, is that Steam can watch their server population drop 70% - and they don't roll back their update immediately (or at all, for that matter.)

    <img src="http://www.thothie.com/4jiggly6/omg_valve.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />
    <i>(Last time, promise)</i>

    Thank the gods NS2 will be on its own engine and we won't be at the mercy of random changes like this!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" />
