• Mr_BeanMr_Bean Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7943Members
If they released the source code into the public domain(The Natural Selection Team that is) then yes they can jack it and assundly things

But if they did not then... NO

Well whether or not they can legally do that..... I like those models better than the original TFC sg models, thats for sure.

No, that does not seem to be legal. Im not 100% sure about the legal issues involved, but I cannot be bothered to pick up a book and investigate them. Not yet anyhow, its certainly something I may look into.

Those look very nice. If I still played TFC, I might have to download them. *grin* But I don't.

i dont know all the legal jazz, but at that site there are plenty of Quake models for use in TFC. donno if its the same principle or not though.

but, at any rate, they do look good. i remember some time in early november when a team mate of mine said that those whould make great SG models. only took someone a month. lol.

One of my friends was bugging me all through the playtest to let him use the NS shotgun as his TFC engineer shotty model. And he wanted the turrets too.

Well they DID say it was from Natural Selection

So I would think it's ok, it's like citing a paper, as long as the cite is there telling who the original creator is, it's fine and u won't get a 0 on it

This is from the FAQ on this site:

QUOTE

Can I use the NS textures, technology, game world, concept art or anything else for any purpose other then Natural Selection?
No. The team has worked very hard to create the NS universe. Please don't e-mail or post asking to use our textures, models or technology for other projects. Any use of this stuff for purposes outside of supporting Natural Selection will be pursued aggressively.

So, no. I don't think they're allowed to do this.

Then, it's simple, we attack him until they are removed...

Is it legal? No. Flayra owns the copyright on all found within Natural Selection, and I doubt he written permission was obtained for this project. It's falls under intellectual property rights. So Flayra has only to issue a cease & desist, and it'll be down.

Be also understand that if Flayra did so, he might end up with a few nay-sayers, and more than a few comparisons to Fox. The author is crediting NS, and not trying to steal credit at all. It is a labor of love.

From what little I've known of Flayra from these boards, Flayra is too much of a hippy to rip it down. But be assured that he will still make sure that proper credit is documented.

I wouldn't mind if Flayra told them to stop it or remove it. If the team put the time and effort in it, they should have a right to claim it as theirs.

Well I am glad that the Natural Selection was at least credited in terms of the game it came from.

But I wouldn't frown upon the NS team for shutting that model down on Custom TFC because it is their work and they do hold copyright rightfully.

I doubt anyone on the forums here would frown upon it. The NS team put work into their models and textures. This person gets the congratulations for porting it to TFC, with a minimum of work.

But how would fans of TFC who happen to like a game of NS now and again feel? What of those TFC fans who may be introduced to NS this way?

although it's good they mention where the models actually come from...mentioning where you got the material from, doesn't mean you haven't done a copyright infringement...to make legal use of other peoples copyrighted materials you DO need a written permision from the copyright holder, in this case Flayra and the rest of the NS team...
