another nitpick: it's kind of silly that you can make every instance of your disease evolve at the same time everywhere in the world, when it's really just one single virus in one person that would actually evolve a new trait, and then it would have to spread around the world all over again. Maybe they'll take this into account in pandemic 3 =p

Nah, they just need to acquire a beneficial trait. Any gene that makes the virus/bacterium/parasite more adept at reproducing and spreading stands a good chance of being permanently incorporated.

I started there once, and it was just as hard to get my virus to leave the island as it is to get it to arrive there... -_-

The last time I started in Madagascar it took 43 days to leave the island. It was spread by rodent, insect, water, and air. And the country was at a red infection level for a long time. But there just weren't any boats leaving >_<

Nope! I just left it on no symptoms and L1 resistances and went for a shower. When I came back, madagascar was infected. Woo!

What exactly does drug resistance do? The speed which people cured by hospitals? Vaccine chance of not working? Longer vaccine production? How easily it spreads? Bigger chance of shutting down hospitals?
  • semipsychoticsemipsychotic Join Date: 2003-07-09 Member: 18061Members
The first one. If you start a game in realistic mode and remove everything from your disease, you can watch its country of birth and see the infection numbers rise and drop in waves. Give it drug resistance and it'll stop dropping.

Also increases time it takes to complete vaccine. 100+ days at IV means you've got all the time in the world, especially if you start piling on the symptoms, leading to all the hospitals being shut down.

    Except Greenlands.

I think Greenland was the first to die out for me. And many of their facilities were still running.

I tried a new strategy that worked in spreading everywhere first try.

    1. Keep restarting until you're on an island (Madagascar in my case). Get a high level of infection there without buying any infection type besides airborne. Buy resistance level 1 for everything but not higher, we want a virus that can still be fairly easily killed to avoid a panic. As soon as you've got your high level of infection, make sure you're airborne and remove all symptoms and wait for that country to export your disease everywhere.

As soon as you've got a few in every country. Screw visibility and get as infectious as possible with your saved points.

    2. ? ? ?

    3. Profit!

Didn't take long for this game to become a meme in /b/

This game is pretty awfully designed and I'm not even sure why it is popular.

The game simply has too many random factors.

    - Evolution points (Awarded at seemingly random intervals)

    - Starting Continent (they are poorly balanced and a choice would be nice)

    - Spreading of disease

    - Vaccine success (while drug resistance has some control over this, it's still a dice roll on whether you win or not)

    - Some of the traits (I got stealthy even though I had pretty high visibility, and other times became famous with no visibility)

    - Closing of borders, airports, seaports (sometimes a country goes ape ###### over a non-lethal virus and other times they never close up until the very end)

Also what is up with disasters? They don't seem to have any effect, and I've never seen any country experience riots.

It's because we're killing off the entire world. bwahahahahahahahahah!

But yeah, if you read the guide it explains what the natural disaster do to the infection rate.

    1. This topic has become quite popular <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

2 I don't suppose anyone has had a game where russia was the one country that was NOT infected, Honestly WTF!

    3 I'm quoting some of those comics funny stuff, well maybe <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Screw this game. I just got a "Famous" trait for a virus that had 24 total infections and no symptoms.

Agree completely. I've seen it posted on several forums so I get a little hyped up over it. I don't get the fun :S Just looking at a world map slowly turn red while you spend points on vague upgrades. The first time I played it I thought I was missing something huge, 1v1 co_lemmings is better than this!
