Lots of places let you apply the $10 to your eventual Spore purchase. Anyways it makes perfect sense to me that they'd charge for this because frankly it's a ton of fun.

I'm actually questioning whether I should actually buy Spore considering the DRM stuff they have on it. They only let you install the game 3 times, and this includes when you reformat your computer and "certain hardware changes" or somesuch.
Even if I do buy it I think I will end up finding a crack for it because that just seems ridiculous to me.

I don't think that 3 install limit is true. At least for the Direct2Drive version I downloaded, their FAQ says it can be installed as many times as needed.
Also there's already 263,000 creatures in Sporepedia, and most of the people I've seen talking about this on the SA forums have already bought the editor or are in the process of it. There's no reason for them to offer the editor free or at a discount for the game because you're paying for the ability to use the editor now, not in 3 months when Spore comes out. Although, I got a $5 credit towards the full game anyway by preordering the game along with the editor through Direct2Drive.
I dunno. On one hand, they'd get a greater diversity if they gave everyone the full editor, and seeding the database with creatures in advance of the game release is certainly ONE of the goals of this release. On the other hand, people are paying. Why offer something for free that people are willing to pay for?
