what will make ns 2 stand out?

radical?
The blendign of rts and fps in the commander mode and general gmae play is what i guess most players would say made ns1 definitive, ground breaking, and completly fresh and different.

My question is what will make ns 2 definitive, completely fresh and different/ground breaking?

Has the rts/fps combo been done ( there are a number of other hlmods that have tried it)

Is ns2s big score bringing the rts/fps combo into a more refined and fuller state (which is no small feat) or will it have something else as well?

Ive been thinking along this line since ive been playing audio surf nad watch that clip of pb winterbottom and some other stuff that made me think aobut new ideas and fundamentals in games, and i know there are loads of cool new ideas things going in to ns2 but my question is about what radicalness will be at the core game or does it need more radicalness. have ns 1 acheived radicalness overload and ns2 is a refining of this?

there is heaps of new stuff - for starters the biggest one for me is the Dynamic infestation, i've never seen any game do that before - starcraft was a 2d sprite game so it doesn't count.

Nothing will make NS2 stand out.. It just depends how fun of a game it is.

i think the simply greatness and love thats put in the game
also the balance and unasymetrical (sp?) teams

make NS2 stay out of this 24/7 EA spam of 40% finished games whitout any balance

Tried and failed, horribly. Not a single fps/rts hybrid has a decent player base, not anywhere near what NS was before Charlie became a lazy bum.

I believe that NS2 is not about making a fresh start (there are some mods, but no commercially successful and distinguished in the industry games), since RTS/FPS combo is already relatively fresh (compared with the time FPS or RTS is around by its own). It's more about simply taking the best ideas and atmosphere of NS1 into next level, throwing it into a pot with the experience NS Dev team have after all these years of implementing new ideas, tweaking and balancing and reimplementing, together with a soup spun full of source graphics and physics (shotgun-propelled skulks! can't wait!), stir well and remember to cross your fingers!

    I love soup, so i'll love NS2.

More importantly, I think the dynamic infestation will be a very big part in making NS2 stand out, as well as all the nice things I keep hearing about the environment and buildings etc. like hive animations and whatnot.

I'd have to agree that NS2 isn't going to be much new dynamics, but the RTS/FPS genre isn't something that's exploded, and no one has done it better than NS. Nuclear Dawn got alot of hype, but they've been in development forever, so right now, there isn't anything worth playing in that genre on an updated engine.

I think that about sums it up. darktimes I recommend ignoring his posts instead of responding to every single one of his inane/trolling comments. It just fills up threads with offtopic spam.

This is a little off topic, but TF2 was going to have a Commander (RTS perspective) class and they cut it from the game. They had to justify the addition of the Commander by making the game incredibly complex but they found that it made the other classes frustrating to play...its all in the developer commentary by hero Robin Walker.

So, yeah. Others have tried it and failed.

^ Yep, that's been discussed in a previous podcast and the comments that followed.
But UWE seem persistent about getting it to work in their game.

Well NS1 tried it and succeeded. I'm not worried about the inclusion of commander mode. I'd be more worried if it wasn't in TBH.

it'll stand out for a couple of reasons, it's not made by microsoft, and it's not made by ea games, and its not sponsored by some hollywood movie studio. It's being made by/for gamers so hopefull gameplay will be exceptional. possibly with some suffering on the coolness of the box it will come in, but oh well. And they probably cant get R.E.M to do the song for the commercial.

The fine tuning of an already successful hybrid game (RTS/FPS). NS delivered some of the most innovative gameplay since the original creation of the First Person Shooter. Mixing elements of RTS and FPS play attracted a variety of gamers of varying different skill levels and was able to accomodate the different groups accordingly. There are many NS players who do not have the greatest technical abilities but can still contribute to their teams by establishing a support role for their teammates (i.e. gorges).

Many other FPS out there are solely based on direct performance (i.e. Maximizing kills, minimizing deaths) sort of creating a watered-down sense of teamplay (i.e. no one is dependent on each other).

NS is quite different. Mustang was one of the greatest fades to ever play this game, but if we did not help him get the resources neccessary to have him become a fade, his powers are minimized. Without the support of the gorges and other skulks, he would not be nearly as good as was. This is TRUE teamplay. Where each group is dependent on each other for varying amounts of time. This is why in my opinion, NS rings out from above.

NS2 will finely tune this already proven system. I look forward to it immensely.

The amount of people who played the original going onto playing the 2nd.
Pretty much the entire interest boost when it's released will stand the game out <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
