    eeeh not the most interesting podcast yet i was hoping thet mabey you got scouted by like EA or microsoft to work on there stuff cause ns is a very large community and many people play it

    not what i was expecting..

    flayra, it's hard to hear you on the podcast
  • NEX9NEX9 Join Date: 2005-03-08 Member: 44299Members
    Yeah its always been a bit like that, max i guess just generally speaks a few DB above Charlie perhaps Charlie sits back max leans in, ether way max you have been slightly louder than flayra since day one.

    Good to hear about the gdc, and your experiences, hyped up games don't interest me, id rather watch the crowded violently run over there climbing on top of each other killing each other to get to the EA booth then go OOoow look ground breaking game development by two no names in their shed, at least all my questions will get fielded and everyone ends up happy. I also dont walk away smelling like 100 nerds.

    Cool, you got to see Jonathan Coulton. Here's his website for those interested: <a href="http://jonathancoulton.com/" target="_blank">http://jonathancoulton.com/</a> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />
    (He has a post covering the event too)

    I was hoping that after that extended wait, we'd get to hear yet a little more about NS2, yet one mass of info later on may be satisfying too. But I'm still glad to hear (from what I can gather) that stress levels are low. I wish the best for your guys.

    I don't think you mentioned NS2 once in that entire podcast.

    Also, next time can you guys make a post every week, saying that you have nothing to say if you don't. That way we don't need to go through the forum posting and searching for reasons why there was no podcast.

    It seems a bit strange to make a post to say that we have nothing to say. You should just assume that podcasts will occur sporadically, and when nothing is posted it's either because we have nothing to say or we're just really busy.

    Also, how many people have problems with the volume of Charlie's voice? Personally, it has never been an issue for me in the slightest. Both voices appear to be the same volume for me.

    Do you prefer a pm or email with Flayra's personell apology? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />

    Seriously, it's obvious if there is either a new podcast or none at all.
    No reason to get whiny every freaking week, when there isn't one, because they have been busy or nothing new to share.

    Don't be pretentious. The devs will release a podcast if they feel that they want to. It's their game, their site, their podcasts.
    They appreciate community input, but it will ultimately be up to themselves on what they will do.

    I was quite amused by the segment on XNA, where you're basically saying you were there but not paying attention and you've made all these cynical assumptions about microsofts intentions. It's mainly amusing because that's how I see them too. I think this is one of the reasons microsoft has really lost it's way, nobody really believes in them any more, they've turned out so much locked in mediocrity, everyone (without exception) waits to see if each new announcement will take off (and of course because it is everyone waiting it never does). I bet if you look at those XNA games they are all made by microsoft employees. MS HTML, XNA, Silverlight, *.NET, * Live... <i>yawn</i>

    I share the disappointment in listening to a whole NS2 podcast that had nothing NS2 related in it.

    Somewhat long? It was 43 minutes, man! Thanks for the links, though.

    It's great that the GDC went so well for you guys, although I was disappointed that by "busy" you seemed to be referring to listening to lectures and partying rather than development. But everyone needs a break sometimes (especially Max - hope he's feeling alright by now). Anyway, since the news update is filed under "Unknown Worlds Podcast" rather than "NS2 Podcast" there's no reason you need to be talking about NS2 per se in any of the updates, much less all of them.

    I sure hope NS2 releases one day though, I'm really looking forward to playing it.

    the same here

    well, personally I prefer to hear nothing about NS2 rather than something that the dev's aren't sure jet or prefer to polish their ideas, since a "raw" idea might cause a complete havoc on these forums ;p

    Hmm, howcome noone mentions Max's voice. the second half of the podcast he started to sound like a robot and I have frikking sennheiser headphones so no it was not me sound hearing thingies. also I hear Charlie just fine, even though Max had "the robot" going somehow, their volume is quite similar.

    I also wanted to mention this"<a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/forums/index.php?showtopic=103889" target="_blank">broken permalink to podcast 18</a>" As I'm not sure there is a lot of activity in the website feedback forum.

    Looking forward to the next podcast or can we hope for a videocast <img src="http://members.home.nl/m.borgman/ns-forum/smileys/sunglasses.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    I'm not telling them that they must release a podcast, i just want a little update every week, even if all they say is "we are busy", or "nothing happened this week". And i don't mean in the form of a podcast.
  • ScytheScythe Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 46NS1 Playtester, Forum Moderators, Constellation, Reinforced - Silver
    Yeah, I too suspected that halfway through Max was hit with a digisation beam and imported into his computer. Either that or his voice synthesiser circuits had a hiccup, damn robots everywhere.

    You've made me want to go to GDC even more now, looks like there's a lot I could learn from showing up.

    A smidgen of advice: Your usual line of "We've got some super-cool stuff to announce soon, probably the next podcast!" is getting a bit old. I hear it every week. I'd rather be surprised to hear that NS2 allows five Skuks to combine together like Voltron, rather than hearing a vague hint at "something cool" last week. It gets a tad tired.

    Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the next one.

    Uhhhh well is it the balance then? Is Charlie's voice louder on the left than the right? Because I was laying down on the right side (relative to my speakers) when I was listening to it.
    I somehow doubt that though... I'm pretty sure his voice is just quieter, and/or he's further away from the mic'.

    Yeah, I noticed that too.

    The Tangent about the virtual worlds thing and artists taking over the world was interesting. I'd also have to agree with most of the posts in this thread about no NS2 news though, I guess that you guys have been busy with GDC and stuff, which is fairly important I'd say, and I'm glad you guys talked about what you saw and thought about it. Keep it up!

    Edit: Also, Blizzard's Cinematics have always been over the top <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />

    Yes, Microsoft sucks blah blah, but it would be nice if you at least tried XNA before completely trashing it like that. XNA is a great framework and is by no means for amateur developers only.

    i agree with San later in the pod cast maxs mic sounded abit dodgy like he wer eunder water or something. It was more just a little strange than anyhting i didnt really make it less audible.

    Some of the future technological predicitions mentioned in the podcast sounded pretty cyberpunk, id recommend the following novels its all fiction but some of it could be technologically viable

    when gravity fails - George Alec Effinger

    Chasm city - Alastair Reynolds

    Neuromancer - William Gibson

    It was good to hear some talk about wierd games and games that push the creative envolope. IN my opinon most games dont go far enought with trying to actually achieve something meaningful or exploring ideas and activity thats new and interesting. Id like to see more games that try to have an effect on the mind of the player other than addiction. Id like to see more games that try to make the world a more better place, or that make critisims on the way the world is. Alot of games are good fun, but very few have much emotional impact, or ask you to think about the reasons for what you are doing. And very few games try to play with our minds or have a sinsister edge. Given that the virtual worlds that could be created are almost limitless so many things could be done.

    Also the broken link to podcast 18 doesn't help much for social bookmarking (as I posted 3 times now, even in the website feedback forum)

    I guess, they are to busy with pod/video cast #19 content <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    I hear you guys that you'd prefer NS2 news - so would we. There are just a lot of uninteresting things that go into running a company that wouldn't be appropriate to talk about. At the same time, when we don't say anything, we are criticized for that as well (even though we've been here full-time for 7 years, some people think that if they don't hear news for a month that we've vanished).

    So we figured it's better to let you know that we haven't vanished and give you something to listen to if you so choose. We summarize the podcast when we post it, so if it doesn't look interesting you can skip it! It seems like the best option to me (but I'll admit it's a little frustrating for us as well).

    Please don't let a few bad comments get you down.

    Maybe you could write a few short blogs on stuff you haven't talked about yet and hold them back for slow weeks where you want to post a little something but don't have anything you want to/can talk about for the week. Or even just a question you could pose to the community each week you didn't have a podcast. Something like "If NS2 kept only one marine weapon from NS, which would you choose to keep?". You could use it as an info gathering session, like a prolonged survey.
