Infested RT's

<div class="IPBDescription">Leech that ######, ######es.</div>So what do you guys think about aliens being able to attach some sort of infestation to a marine RT then get maybe... half the res from it? All the res? I don't know. I was thinking it could work one of two ways.

1) The obvious auto DI infest. Once the slow-moving, over-hyped DI reaches the marine RT perhaps haphazardly placed too close to a hive location or overcome by the ever advancing alien forces, it is infested and ever 3-4 res clicks from it goes to the aliens. Maybe marines just have to burn off the DI, which will probably be coming back, or maybe they have to kill the nodes in the area.

2) Gorges have the ability to infest RT's. It would cost half as much as a regular RT and would have half the HP and maybe would take full damage from lmg's and the like. Depending on balancing. This would obviously leech more res than the first version. It would take every other res, or maybe 2 out of 3. The marines wouldn't notice it until they actually looked at an RT after wondering about their income. It would have to have a visible model and would probably be simply knifed off for the most part.

I think this idea would spice up the res-war a little bit. It would be an alternative to biting an RT to destruction and would not alert the marines. This would be the perfect tactic for when the marines have most of the RT's and a sneaky Gorge could really do some damage if he has enough res, assuming they will cost, say, 5-7 res? A good way to cripple an RT with a phase gate near it without triggering the alarm, but also fairly simple to defend against in numerous ways. This is a cool sneaky way for aliens to turn the tides while the commander's attention is diverted.

Sorry for talking in circles. I was writing while thinking. What do you guys think?

I don't think this idea really fits in because it implies that the TSA and Kharaa can coexist. It's more of a philosophy thing than anything, I'd prefer attack and destruction to subversion in terms of resource gathering at least.

Would not go so far to say this idea should be canned for the reason above, but it certainly needs to be something we should think about carfully.

On one hand it could give electifying RT's more of a purpose via knocking off the DI/preventing aliens from getting res. As a Marine I would not take nicly to the aliens sucking off some of the res so no co-existing there. As an alien it could allow sneaking into an area and getting some res for my team without alerting the COM, very handly when the marines are on the offensive but not useful at all when the aliens are. After all owning a RT would be way bettter.

With the possible alteration of marines buying their own items on the horizon regular RT cheaking is something new for the COM to do with that new found free time <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />. Clicking on an infested RT and preforming some sort of action (hacking the RT to prevent loss aka mini game, spending 5 res to shake off the infestation etc).

Possibly it should only work when the gorge is close or limited to an amount of res or maybe as a method for slowing down the marines res rather than gaining themselves (gorge spends 5 res to reduce the flow to 1/2 speed).

Current vote: maybe after i see another 20 posts

Same here, but it throws the marines off balance... Aliens would be able to gather more resources with the same effort!

The idea is fine, but only with reasonable countering option, like making the HP of alien RTs 3/4?

Well the fact of the matter is the game is going to be completely thrown off and re-balanced quite a few times before it is released. There are going to be lots of new abilities, perhaps an entirely new resource model and maybe even new life-forms. So, just something to keep in mind. In my opinion it is something that wouldn't really throw the balance off too much because it would really be a last resort in a situation that is pretty much impossible to recover from.

Empires Mod has a similar system in place, and for the most part it works well. They're Scout class can "saboatge" a refinery making it produce res 1/2 as fast, and you wouldn't notice unless you check and see it smoking a little.

As for stealing that res, it's an interesting idea. Since you're also denying opponent res, I'd increase the cost a little bit. MAybe not a full tower, but like 3/4 of the cost. After all, that res you gain is no longer going to the enemy team, so you've gained an effect +2 res. Of course, a simple model addition would be nice to indicate infestation and a fairly simple way to get them off would be helpful (shoot or welding it off sounds the best to me. Costs time, not res)

I meant to preface my comment with "this is not a bad idea" but apparently forgot. While I'm still against it for the reason stated above, gameplay takes precedence over philosophy. If it's found that the new resource system for aliens makes it harder for them to get nodes up then this could be looked at as a possible balancing addition. Right now, it seems like a solution in search of a problem.

I have to agree with Tilde a bit one this one. Resources nodes are a physical representation of area control, leeching resources just doesn't fit well with the rest of the theme... meh...

    BUT!

How about having bile bomb infest a resource tower rather than splash like a vomit-balloon? That would look WICKED SICK!
