I guess its up to the devs for how they'll handle the learning curve. Seems like the two most prominent new-class ideas are this one and the gorge one, so we'll see what happens.
I was thinking perhaps not as a free class, but perhaps as 10-15 res alien, very cheap something you could gestate into at the beginning. Though perhaps something with more area denial. How about an alien with not nearly as much hp and ap as a gorge, but with a semi shield for a head and decent regen. It's main attack would be head butting into a marine knocking them back more than damaging them. The shield on the head would cover most of the front, but marines who get close would have a greater opening to the shoot the rest of the body. Perhaps it has a long body and the marines could shoot over the head shield if close, of course if they do they probably will get pushed back, that could be a problem, might look too cartoony. It's main purpose is slowing down marines in areas such as a thin hall way, giving the skulks time to come defend. The shield would be weak against explosives, and would transfer at least some damage from HMG fire. Maybe ability/slot 2 would be a spit that as suggested in an earlier post would either impair vision or slightly jam a gun with large andrenaline costs, not an attack to damage at range but to bring to annoy the enemy and bring them in close for a push. Could be a problem with pushing rines off of bridges into gaps and what not, overly exploitable? Perhaps at slot 3 or 4 it could have a mist/fog or acid splash on the floor area denial/run away technique that could only be used once till it got back to the hive/infestation.
We already have an Onos for area denail I suppose, I would love to puah a rine around though, either way I don't want <insert> generic alien life form that spits. Their is a need for something more basic or easier to start with, but at the same time it needs to be able to have something that makes it feel different from the rest.
Gotta say, i like the idea of a fog ability. Don't know where it could fit into the classes (maybe could even be used as the 2nd ability for my proposed class?), but it would be crazy for gameplay. I'm picturing the ability using as much energy as primal (i.e. all of it), and sending out smoke around the alien's current position. Would be great as a teamwork-oriented weapon.
But would umbra no longer soak up bullets? Would it still be a 3rd hive ability?
I dunno... any kind of fog weapon, to me, seems like it would be overpowered if it was shot. The alien could shoot it and then be able to close the gap without issue, which would really, really hurt the marines. If the alien instead had to spread the fog around his current position, it would make it much more defensive. You could still use it on the offense, but the alien would have to close the gap first, which is the time where aliens are *supposed* to be vulnerable.
Plus, i just love the current umbra <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
