Publisher problem?

Hi, i read from the great site "lerk.de" something about publisher.
Where is the problem?
Garry's Mod is published by Valve?
Maybe Garry don't get many money, thats the problem i think, right?
Sell your Game over Steam, about $19,99, Valve get 10% and all will fine?
I know im just a user with not a hunch about the developer business, but its just an Question.

    What is the question?

The developers are already working with Valve on publishing NS2 through Steam.

Natural Selection 2 is going to be published by Valve, they need all the help they can get to make Natural Selection better and they WILL sell it on Steam since thats where every game is and saves them the trouble of selling them in shops over the world which would cost more.

    BTT:
I read about UWE has released a Demo of NaSe 2 to get a publisher.
Since 2 Days i buy Team fortress 2 over Steam and it was very easy, so i think NaSe 2 will sell very well.
    Hope its comming out 2008 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

You fail to correct even basic capitalisation issues and in some cases your transaltion reads worse than the original (e.g. "but Valve will get 10% of your profit, will fine?").

For the record, the correct edit would be something like this: (paragraph structure preserved, because this is an internet forum, not a novel; questions re-written to maintain the interrogative tone; nouns only capitalised where appropriate; word order changed as little as possible while keeping the text legible, permissible and coherent)

I don't think the original was so bad that any English-speaker couldn't derive the intended meaning from it, so no real reason to correct, only I hate it when people correct non-English speakers but include misinformation in their corrections.

Actually, I could barely understand what the question was.

Actually, I still don't know what it is.

And somehow, your (Crispy's) "translation" doesn't look like a proper translation, to me, anyway. Just seems like the subject matter is different, somehow.

Just drop it. Correcting posts is a touchy subject, if you have trouble understanding the post then it's not unlikely your "translation" will be wrong. Accept it graciously and move on.

Crispy's "translation" is how I read the original post. If it's wrong Price will tell us so. The paraphrased question was, "Why isn't Unknown Worlds working with Valve more closely? Is it because Unknown Worlds doesn't want to pay royalties?"

To answer that question it's not because of royalties but creative control. If UK takes money from Valve(or most other publishers) those publishers gain some control on how the game is going to come out. The developer team wants as close to possible full control over NS2 and the intellectual property.

As far as we know, NS2 <b>will</b> be released through Steam and probably other game downloading services.
<!--quoteo(post=0:date=:name=Price)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Price)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I read that UWE has shown a demo of NaSe 2 to publishers.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
This was more a demonstration of the tools they're using to create NS2 and what NS1 is like. It's not a "demo" like you would download off of FilePlanet. A better word would be "presentation". Unknown Worlds is trying to find a publisher that won't ask for too much control over the game or company.

Welcome to the forums and I think it's neat that you've learned most of your English through game forums. Considering the usual quality of posts made on game forums I think your English is pretty good. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

I thought he was telling us he found out in 'lerk.de' that the NS devs didnt have a publisher [for NS 2 I assume], and he was suggesting the devs go the same way Garrys mod did, through Steam..ok Valves takes a 10% cut but shouldnt be an issue.
He ends by admitting he doesnt know much on the business side of the issue.

I think Flayra and Max mentioned a tech demo (not playable) to Valve, so I would assume that publishing via Steam is the planned route. (oops , should of read the above post better <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />)

I think.. I thought mostly the same as ASnogarD.
And as such, I didn't think there was a real 'question'.

    1. I have an Honours degree in Modern Languages and Cultures (majoring in two European languages) from a top-10 English university.
    2. I lived for 6 months with a native German speaker and as a result spent a lot of time socialising with Germans with varying levels of English, so I have a fairly good understanding of how they construct sentences in English based on what they would normally say in German.

I once read somewhere that "A woman without her man is nothing" could be punctuated to "A woman without her man, is nothing." or just as easily "A woman: Without her, man is nothing." That's just by moving punctuation around and leaving the words in the same place! Unfortunately the only one who will really know what Price meant is Price himself. It sounds like Crispy is in the best position among us to make an educated guess, but that doesn't guarantee he will be completely correct. Either way, this debate has strayed far from the purpose it was created for.

I too am inclined to think Price was wondering why Charlie and Max are looking for investors when they can sell their game over Steam. If that is the case, then the answer is that Charlie and Max want work on NS2 full-time, and need money to pay rent and buy food while they complete the game. I believe the hope is that the game will then make them enough money so that they can pay themselves while they work on their next project.

Just a question aside. Charlie and Max do ONLY collaborate with Valve for the publishing through steam right? So they did not sell NS² to Valve or any other things that are connected to it?
Because I remember Charlie saying that he would never sell NS to Valve no matter what kind of deal they suggest to him.

Original, successful, established IP is a massive bargaining chip for a small developer, though. I can only see it being sold if Charlie & co. decide there is nothing left for them to do with the NS universe, or if they are seriously strapped for cash (worst case scenario, i.e. bankruptcy).

They sound on top of things and doing well for external investment, so it seems there isn't any danger of that.
