Hearing the enemies voice-talk

<div class="IPBDescription">If you got close enough to the alien/human, you can hear them voice-tk</div>Maybe if you get a certain distance, you can start to gradually hear the enemies voices of their team using microphones. So if you were a skulk getting ready to run around a corner, and they heard you, you could hear them say over their microphone 'skulk!' and then retreat or something.... I dunno

That'd be actually pretty cool as long as it'd extend purely to the skulk, although it'd be useless outside of pubs and even useless 99% of the time there. Nevertheless it'd be pretty cool knowing that skulks have sensory organs that are capable of detecting radio waves. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I think this would be more annoying than useful. IT would just make people use 3rd party voice programs (teamspeak, ventrilo) more often. And half the time the voice chat in pubs is people just casually talking. I dont wanna have to hear more of that as a skulk (my own team talking + marines in proximity)

Or you could simply turn on the all talk feature built into the source engine that an admin of the server can simply enable at any time lol, i gotta say though NS is about teamwork and a team talking on the mic tend to tell where the aliens or marines are attacking and give out plans to attack here and there and all that, if the teams can hear each other when talking on the mics then they just wont talk on the mics due to there positions and strategies being given away when close to an alien or marine vice versa.

Face it guys NS maps are meant to be close quarters and there will pretty much always be an alien close by to hear you talking to your team on the map or vice versa for the marines, personally i think it wouldn't be a good feature to have in the game on release, but maybe a mod like that would work, a mod with a background being like an intelligence comm system built into the marines visors that allow them to hear everything the aliens are doing from a certain distance around the marines, and for the aliens they have a biological gene that allows them to learn to pick up any frequencies the marines are using on there visor intelligence system.

That is the only viable option for this kind of feature i can see is a mod or addon whatever it may be like how i explained it, an in game feature will take away a players freedom to securely talk to there team on the mic if its a release feature successfully making players type or talk on something like ventrilo or teamspeak.

Maybe to combine the best of both worlds have a communication start/stop noise that can be heard if you are close enough but not the actual communication (think walkie talkie beep). The actual communication should be used to relay tactics and orders. Besides do you think the aliens would be able to understand human speech and vice versa?

personally I prefer the idea they had in Crysis Singleplayer; when on certain difficulty levels the enemies' language would change to Korean. It's be nice if we heard the Kharaa native language (make it up)!

yeah people would just cheat and bi-pass it with 3rd party programs. It would be cool tho.
  • RadixRadix Join Date: 2005-01-10 Member: 34654Members, Constellation
It would also cut down on mic spam.
  • BCSephBCSeph Join Date: 2005-02-24 Member: 42384Members, Constellation
No, it would make people spam mic more because now they can annoy BOTH teams!
  • HatlabuFarkasHatlabuFarkas Join Date: 2005-03-09 Member: 44496Members
i thoink the basicly Noise u can hear from enemies, because the KHARAA is NOT understand HUMAN language, and vitza-verza .

(when the palyer start using MIC, the default noise is on around player... )

When I said mic spam, I was speaking of people who talk about their cat, motorcycle, breakfast, plans for thanksgiving, and how much beer they may or may not be intoxicated with at a given moment.

i think this would be incredibly awesome to see/hear in game and would really add to the atmosphere, but i still must disagree voicechat is almost necessary in this game with all the teamwork, and this would deterr most players from using voice chat.

it would be great for atmosphere, but bad for teamwork.

it would be cool but completely unnecessary, and brings more negatives than positives.

also what makes you think that humans and kharaa can understand each other ? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Scrambling a marine's voice wouldn't be realistic, just as cats hear humans speak as we do, but don't know wtf it means.

Though, you have a point - Alien players would be able to understand a marine saying "Over here!", whereas marine players wouldn't know the difference between "ERGH" and "ARGH" for the aliens xD

restricting or making communication in any way undesirable is a bad thing imo... and people will use vent too.
  • GartermanGarterman Join Date: 2003-09-24 Member: 21158Members
I am 100% for hearing something when a nearby enemy uses voice-chat whether it's the players voice or not.
(Maybe the more time you spend near the opposite team members the more understandable it should be <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> )

Why should a voice call for a pg/rt etc be silent when a standard radio command is not???
  • LosButchLosButch Join Date: 2007-12-27 Member: 63268Members
The idea is good, but I wont suggest using it. Using a mic should always be an advantage as it encourages everyone else to start using a mic. I find games where most of the people have mics, to be much better and a lot more fun.

how does that skulk even understand human language?

    and the other way 'round:

i really don't think kharaa would (in terms of the fiction) speak comprehensible english - i mean, if anything, they'd be speaking mongolian <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

I say not a voice but like if someones shooting/chomping it would show up on radar. or when some on asks for ammo the aliens can hear it. and when the aliens change form/evolve the marines hear a sound.(if they don't already) also the flapping of the lerks wings. if a lerk is flying.(if its not in the game already) but silence/sound suppressing armor would fix all this.

Because the skulk is meant to be a scout. Maybe its evolved its brain in such a way that its now a complete savant, it can understand millions of factors of speech and interpret all of them - combining all of them with the hive's huge database to translate them into the basic language the hive understands. Sort of like how a baby learns, except several million times faster.

    I'd buy that.

Edit: Also, no alien can think by itself, all aliens are controlled by the hive mind and share knowledge.

then why do dogs sit when u tell them to sit?

maybe u should only hear conversation of ppl parasited.

Are you joking? It's because you've <b>trained</b> them to respond in that way to a familiar <b>sound</b>. That's common sense.
You could just as well teach it to sit when saying 'jump'. Dogs don't understand human language. Tell me, have you ever had a meaningful two-way conversation with a dog?

Are you serious? Animals can learn to understand human language to some extent the exact same way humans understand human language. They aren't smart and can't learn too many words, but what's stopping a hive from picking up language?

The question isn't whether or not it is possible in the NS universe for aliens to understand human language (they already hear sounds like "need medpack" etc), but whether it is benefiting the game mechanics. This quote pretty much nails it. You shouldn't be penalized for using a mic. And in a competitive scenario, this feature would be useless as the teams would just bypass it with teamspeak/ventrilo.

Hearing mics doesn't really offer any benefits, but it can add to immersion if implemented right. As in - sound fades in the closer marines get to the skulk. Since skulks can already sniff marines, this would add even more tension to marines who are trying to stay undetected. Don't use voice when you are hiding!

    Sounds pretty realistic.
