I was a french privateer before my toon got wiped, and haven't recreated since the "open" beta started. the french are kinda the underdogs - seems the fewest people pick them.

after having spend a total of 5 minutes on their site, and having signed up for the beta I am still wondering who the beta is for, or rather when I get to play.

I'd certainly be willing to join a NS society in-game, but I'm not entirely sure how much I'll be playing the open beta yet... my free time lately has been limited, and my gf just got back into WoW with me in tow -_- even though I personally prefer the somewhat more fresh and new gameplay of Pirates

Im not sure how much changed since 2 weeks ago, but the game is not even remotely close to deserving a monthly fee. The game gets old really fast.. As someone pointed out earlier, the game never changes. I will agree, however, that this game DOES break the mold. It's different, and deserves at least a shot in the open beta.
The graphics are a far cry from "not cutting edge" - they ######ing suck. I'm sure this was a result of 1) the overly long development and production process for what little they have to show for it and 2) they're trying to rake in all the potential customers they can, because this game is going nowhere. It's going nowhere SLOWLY. Anyone who's sailed a ship in that game knows what I'm talking about.
It's fun to mess around with, so long as it's free. I stand by my belief that there is only a narrow market of players willing to continually pay for this type of thing.
For those who havn't heard, avatar combat and character models in general were added in after ship combat. It was an afterthought. The only problem is, ship combat feels like a fun mini-game to complement a larger, more epic universe. This is a problem because there is no epic quality, no immersiveness, nothing to suck you in and keep you playing.
I suppose this is more of a problem for Flying Lab Software, as from the way I see it, people who start off subscribing will probably like the game (no guarantees, it feels like a free flash game with alot of depth and not enough breadth..), but then decide against shelling out whatever they're going to ask per month. Just try the game and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Not worth the monthly fee, but play the free Open Beta while you can to make up your own mind.
Also, most towns look the exact same with the exact same layout, textures, atmosphere (well, more like a lack of this), etc etc etc. In fact, across all the nations the NPCS in the starting towns have the exact same names, attire, and the exact same missions (with the same mission titles), and rewards.
You can't sail your ship and get out wherever you like. You can't walk around outside the towns whenever you like. Everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) is instanced - including things so trivial as local establishments like the bar, mayor's office, shops, etc. etc. The game doesn't feel immersive, and it doesn't deserve a fee.
PVP, however, is pretty fun. The only problem is that is gets old quickly, and it's a little slow for my tastes. As someone else said earlier, no matter how many awesome upgrades or insane powerups, buffs, whatever.. you have, it's always going to be ship vs. ship on the open sea. Different does not always mean better.

I hear fans of EVE will like this game.
