Corpse Removal

inspired by Female Marine topic...
I was reading the female marine topic and someone mentioned (out of humor) removing corpses quickly.

One thing that really irks me and destroys a game's sense of actuality is the fact that to save resources corpses are removed from the map after a short time.
This makes sense on two fronts:

1) Saves processor power
2) Stops cluttering of map

however, corpses just dissapearing is stupid.

I propose that after a set time (40s ~ 90s) the corpse model has a disintegrate animation...
Marines: Blue Glow, departicalise and fall "through the floor" back into the nano-grid matrix, as if the marines essence is being recycled (green friendly?)
Aliens: Decomposing, the body sort of "melts" into a gooey lump on the floor and then either fades into the infestation or just rots away.

it would be very cool for continuity, and maybe also for the "oh god i don't want to end up like that" factor.
it would also be something i have never myself seen considered in a multiplayer game before, and perhaps lead a march into the future of multiplayer gaming!
and finally it would be entirely viable, even if the death animation is just extended by a huge amount (90s) and after laying still for most of that time, the disintergrate animation is tacked on the end

I'd like to see this. It would be an interesting gameplay mechanic if incorporated. As long as it's not gruesome I think it would fit with the atmosphere nicely as well.

Would it be possible to just have them dissapear from the game when it is our of Line of sight or range, that way less time is spent on making a disintegrate animation for all the models.

It would be strange for the marines to simply disintegrate, when decomposing doesn't even happen that fast.

A possible alternative could be to allow aliens to eat dead marines for resources, and then getting RFK through that means, instead of the res on actual kill.
Something like 2 bites would make it quick and painless, but still a nessecary evil.

Although aliens could still slowly decompose, picturing an Onos that has died in the hallway, 2 minutes later the Onos still lies dead, but his ribs are now visible, and hes got some gooey stuff over him <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

I was thinking that the marine effect would look like a "beam out" from Star Trek and aliens would quickly turn into DI. As cool as onos skeletons would be I don't think we'd see something that graphic/detailed.

I've seen someone mention this (I think Stix) with the background that it pertains to nano-technology or something. It would be extremely nice.

I think UT2K3 had some kind of particle effect when players died, didn't it?

Beaminning the corpse out for marines seems to be the prefferd method of removal. The marine is then "revived" by medics and portals back in. Thus its always the same six marines running around the level which makes sense from a story line point of view.

The DI methods also works well for aliens but should slowly dissipear etc if not directly connected to a hive. As DI is surposed to act as some sort of advantage to the Aliens this is important form a balance point of view. you don't want suicide rushes to be too powerful.

Watching a fragged skulk melt into a little pile of goo and then scurry back to the nearest DI would be cool for new players.

Hell it would be cool period.

    sounds perfect

perhaps marines that die over DI also rott away rather than nantiting away - and vice versa too, a dead alien in a marine area will get cleaned up by the nanties.

i agree too... although i do wish nanites were'nt the be-all and end-all of the NS universe... i remember this topic was mentioned in another thread about a year ago, people were discussing small maintenance bots that would scoot out from under the walls, zap the bodies into dust, and sweep up the mess. made me think of the old old old space quest 1 game when you were in the cantina playing the poker machine. if you got 3 skull&bones it would shoot you with a disintergrating laser, and a tiny little robot would come along and sweep up the ashes...
if only real gambling machines worked in the same way.... bah what am i saying, people would still gamble.

those EGA graphics are timeless in my opinion.

we have had this similar suggestions to this before and in those threads i liked similar to this.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKxQAj9V1_I...feature=related

jump to 9:12 - 9:40 and watch there see the blue out line trace of nannites eating stuff its featued a few times through out the movie but this is prolly the bigest sequence with use, similar to this, the same sort of effect is also in the solution the TSA med packs. drop a med pack nad have a close look as a skulk or some such, perhaps find one in observer mode.

dont know if said yet but if the corpse dont disappear you got 1 big disadvantage: you probably cant see weapons

if you die with a SG for example, and it drops below your corpse, you probably wont see it till it disappears (weapon 99%ly lost).. gg

I don't think it would a big problem to fix what c0ke said. Just let the corpse push the weapon a few feet away when it drops on top of it.

There is no need to waste resources on a real decay-animation but a few different stages of disintegration would be cool. And Aliens melting to slime (possibly feeding the DI?) sounds like a good idea too.
