So, it's out. Anyone playing it? Thoughts? Kudos? Criticisms?

I played the demo, although that wasn't a lot of help because apparently it's a really bad representation of the full game. In any case, it was so dull that I ran through the last half without fighting anyone just to see if it got any better (it didn't). <a href="http://shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=657" target="_blank">ShackNews' review</a> seems pretty good, although the overall negative tone slightly detracts from the "it's still a fun game" message. Frankly without an updated demo that actually shows me the goods, or without playing it on a friends' computer, I'm not going to buy this. Especially not when I could wait a bit to see if it's worth it to subscribe, and <i>ESPECIALLY</i> not with the million other great games coming out in the next few months.

I played the alpha/beta and bought it the other day. Its pretty fun imo. I play with a friend so its just a mindless killing co-op game. My only issue are the skills and late game replayability. Since I plan to pay the fee that shouldn't be an issue as we get content patches every few months. My character is a level 19 Guardian and just got though Act 3.

Apparently the full game is fun, if played in MP mode. Also, its supposed to look pretty good on DX10. Downloading it right now, can tell you more tomorrow. (EA's downloading service sucks, 4 hours to get the game, I'd get it in one hour on other sites...)

Ran the demo once for each character, it didn't fascinate me in the long run, especially blademaster. It was basically like any other mmo, except when playing as sniper because of the whole aiming like a ordinary fps, but it already exist loads of mindless shooter fps games so it didn't really excite me despite bringing it to the mmo scene. Credits for actually having enemies which actually forces you to aim somewhere else then 3-10 feet above the ground.
I also got stuck (I think) because after getting to station-whatever and opening all the gates I couldn't find the quest person people were talking about to progress further (delivering voice thingy iirc), any help on that?

The demo is not representative of the final product. It's far more boring according to everyone I've talked to. Also, the demo doesn't really "end." You just can't progress any farther.

I picked up the CE yesterday, and grinded away online to level 10 Marksman. Game is pretty awesome, mp is still a bit lonely unless you sit around finding duuudes to team with to places -_^

Randomised levels have upsides and downsides. I got this little gem yesterday. I have titled it "l2dig n00b"

I beta'd to about level 10, it's a fun grind game but I don't think it unseats Diablo 2 in that department. There's just too many great games out and coming out right now to devote a lot of time to a grind game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> unless you're particularly poor - in which case, Hellgate will offer you a lot of play hours for your gaming buck.

Well, I was a dumb ass and ordered it from EAStore (I LIKE digital distribution).

They are smacktards and can't actually BILL my credit card!. Yes, they put in the preauth but never actually FINALIZED IT!

This took about 5 messages (over 2 weeks) to their tech support to actually figure out!

    (PS, still not fixed).

    Grumble.

Obviously, I preordered it and played it. I like the game. It is pure grind, but I like it.

i played the beta and it was okay..i was even somewhat pondering buying it till i read this...character slots.

in single player you have a LIMIT OF TWO.

    yes. two. in singleplayer.
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
well, multiplayer is basically single player with lobbies filled with people you can choose not to group with. and chances are you won't have an interest in playing all 6 classes anyway.
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
    In multiplayer you have three.

I'll agree that when I started this game was pretty boring while I was in the beta. And honestly it seems like it should still be boring. But for some reason it's growing on me. Already bought CE and lifetime sub so I can come and go. I like it.

I'll save my money for the tons of other games that are out or that are coming out:

Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, RE5, Crysis, UT3, Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, Guitar Hero III, Mass Effect, Black Site: Area 51, Turok, Too Human, Warhound, Frontlines: Fuel of war, Condemned 2: bloodshot, Devil May Cry 4, and even though Harker hasn't been announced yet and it won't come out till nearly the 3rd QT of 2008, i'm still gonna save up some money for it.

And last but certainly not least..... DUKE NUKEM FOREVER ;D (it wasn't cancelled, it's still in production for the PC)

God the demo sucked. Played it yesterday, easy as hell and...easy as hell and...easy as hell. As soon as I got to the outpost thing, I bought a glowy sword and got the +hp regen on kill and whacked every normal monster to death in 1 hit, every somewhat stronger in 2 and boss-like things went down in like 5 rightclicks and 5 leftclicks.

For people who have played it, full version or not, how open is the game world, does it have decent fighting (is it repetitive, easy to use, fun to use, stuff like that), is there alot of adversity in terms of enemies (meaning, are there lots of different types of enemies and are the same enemies adverse in terms of how they look? so your not killing an enemy that looks exactly like every other one of its type), and are the graphics and physics any good?
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
    Diverse
    DIVERSE DIVERSE DIVERSE.

the answer is that it is much like DII.

There are a good range of enemies, but there is also a good amount of copy and paste enemies (not like DI where there were like 10 baddies and 100 colour sets).

The figting is fun, kinda grind, but much like Diablo.

    Yah, it is DII FPS.

    nuff said.

Hmmm, so what would you rate it in terms of an RPG.

And is it free roaming? Like oblivion?

It's an RPG like Diablo II is an RPG. And it is free roaming, yes, although certain parts are locked off until you proress to them. It's not linear or anything.

Seriously it's just Diablo II, only set in a futuristic London after Hell has invaded Earth.

Ahhh, Diablo II - a game from back in the days when I didn't understand a tenth of the English, and thought necromancy could work efficiently in a RPG.

I need some of you to give your opinion to the question: Is it polished?

Then they're idiots for releasing a crappy demo? It (only, was expecting it to get 90%+) got 82% in the gaming mag I read monthly and have hardly disagreed with. It fails, I'll go play it at a friend's house next week just for you, then inform you if I still think it fails.

"Only" an 82% is hardly what I'd give the demo. That thing would get a 60%, maybe a 65% at most.

Hellgate is not completely linear, but it's not non-linear. It's not free-roaming the way the Elder Scrolls games are.
The game is divided into small, interconnecting zones, most of which have one or two exits. There are hubs from which several zones branch out, but except for two or three these will be dead-ends after a small handful of zone changes. If you don't mind slight spoilers, check yonder handy <a href="http://www.tnt-home.de/hgl/portal.php?page=content&tid=438" target="_blank">map</a>. It's not 100% complete I'm told, but the early parts are pretty complete and the map conveys a good sense of how the world is constructed.
Hellgate is linear in the way a tree is. When climbing a tree, you can walk out on a branch and play with the leaves there (and Hellgate will require you to do that), but there's only one way to the top, and that's along the trunk.

You could also compare it to spoked wheels without rims on a long axis. You start on the hub of one wheel. You can run to the end of the spokes and see what's there, or you can run along the axis to the next wheel and play around with the spokes there. You'll have to explore and solve quests on several of the spokes before you're allowed access to the next wheel, which in turn will require you to explore and solve quests on several of its own spokes before it allows you access to the next wheel, and so on.

I would also like to add that although I've only played the demo, I've never seen a more realistic depiction of the Covent Gardens station in a videogame concerning an invasion of Earth by Hell.
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
Agreed. Out of all the depictions of Covent Garden Station in videogames concerning invasions of earth by hell (in the attic with the tuning fork), this is the most realistic.
  • sgt.wafflessgt.waffles Join Date: 2007-09-22 Member: 62406Banned
Well it does seem to be interesting and although i wasn't much of a diablo 2 fan, because of some weird reason which i have yet to figure out, i think it's because the game had all the right things, but it didn't polish them off too well. So from what i'm seeing it looks (NOT GOING BY WHATS ON THE DEMO) like a possibly addicting, deep, free roaming RPG.

    Though I have been wrong before <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
