<div class="IPBDescription">Well like i thought i would ask.... and stuff... and things</div>So guys,

I read this other forum about Eve, which features the amazing weekly thread called "teh friday thread™" where in every one discusses their plans and little frustrations about their day. Typically this involves hijinks concerning freight containers and forklifts.

Looking around we have a whole bunch of threads about video games but not a whole lot about other stuff. And frankly, despite the fact that my dwarfs keep starving to death, or maybe because of it. I am beginning to lose interest. So, I thought I would discuss real life. If I have to i will illustrate my posts with stick men like usual to keep myself entertained.

Presently, I am on the the phone with a faculty member. This call came is just as I got here, I am not making this bit up. Apparently, they are attempting to save a pdf from her Google search in Word Office 2007. Which, from what I have gathered, actually means they are unable to find the save button to save the pdf in Internet Explorer 7. But, moving on

The faculty member also reminded me that the meeting about research I am attending later is going to be a dream. I would tell you the name of the study but during a our last meeting I have been informed that the study name will now be encrypted in all communications. And thus the fact that I work for 0b2bd88777aee7b6affb32a247b5427758700864 wouldn't help at all. Seriously though this meeting will be roughly as much fun as ... I completely failed to come up with a good simile there. If you can come up with a good one I would be more than happy to co opt it. It needs to give a feeling of helplessness, being ignored, and overall lack of organization and understanding.

Seriously try to imagine the classic "more tea dear" grandmother running a research meeting. Apparently she is unsure that the data I have stored in SQL "has the correct variable names". To be Completely honest here I the concept of not having the right variable names mystifies confuses me. If my data didn't have the right variable names, aka column names, I couldn't access it.

But, My assurances that the data exists fail to impress this fact on her and she repeatedly asks for printouts. I have tried giving her the printouts. Which she then has faxed to California. Because that is easier than simply asking them to print out a copy from.. oh I don't know the reporting website.

Ahh, The reporting website. I am still not sure why exactly that as the web developer on the project I am the only one considered competent to operate it. I mean after all, It's not like it doesn't export directly to word, or excel, or SPSS, or access and you certainly can't get to it now because the site <a href="http://e9974eb0a5486c8f492de4192de99cc98acf68d2/survey" target="_blank">http://e9974eb0a5486c8f492de4192de99cc98acf68d2/survey</a> is far to to hard to remember. I know the encrypted study name makes that harder to remember, but trust me if you just use the decrypted study name it works. Just don't, you know, publish that name or the subjects will hack our web server and steal all our variables. That's probably why I have to check them every week.

There you have it, My little rant.

Completely offset by lunch with a cute redhead today though.

How's everyone else's day?

Steadily raining and I can't go outside and play, which means I can't cycle / walk / work in my yard.

Consequently I am spending to much time on the IPB support site I work for. And here.

your post mostly confused me, but that fits in with your name, so all is well. =p the gist of it, is you work for some sekrit research group that has an idiot in charge of it?

I work for a fortune 100 pharma company and estimate how many full-time employees will be required to conduct various drug studies. but mostly I sit around on forums, like right now. I don't get paid very much because I work on contract, which is sad for me. I don't have many amusing anecdotes, because for every idiotic thing one of my 'customers' does, I do at least one idiotic thing as well. Our database system, OPX2, is a giant mess of tangled, incomprehensible algorithms and data. The more people try to perfect it, the more of a monster it becomes... soon, it will become sentient and take over the world, I fear.

Im putting off writing an english paper. The roughdraft is due in about an hour. It's the middle of the day and my roommate is still asleep, I can't blame him though I do the same things on my off days. Im also hoping that the laptop charger I ordered off the internet gets here soon so I can use it as the power source for my peltier beverage cooler.

    That's about it.

Just got back from my meeting. Nothing fun happened.

And yes its raining, but I guess that is better than fire like the left coast.

The woman in the cube next to me turn the lights on in the office when she got back in so its all daytime in here instead of the happy cave feeling we had going on when I left. Yeah I live in a cube.

The rest of my after noon involves fixing a broken mailer and then writing some SQL. Finally setting up some cron jobs on the web server. Then walking home 2 miles in the rain.

Right now? I've just gotten out of a pretty epic 4v4 game of Company of heroes in which the valiant British defenders were slowly pushed backwards and slaughtered by a combined Wermacht and Panzer elite force. I'd just upload the REC file if the stupid crappy forum attachment thingy would let me, but alas I can't.

My day has been spent hunting down a problem in my code while praying that the last fix I delivered actually works. The last fix was for a corner case that happens roughly once out of 50 runs. My code gets accessed 100,000 times + each run. The problem was (I hope) that Sets contain direct references to the Objects while the toArray() method copies the objects. It would explain the frequency of the problem I was seeing, but not all of the symptoms. So yeah, fun stuff.

    this is pretty amusing

I think everyone knows by now that when someone says

"so what are you doing? What are you up to?"

it's so they can nod and pretend to be interested until they get their turn and they get to talk about themselves

This isn't directly about me- I was in my virology class and it was a specialized lecture dedicated to HIV/AIDS and our prof was going over preventative measures. He had abstinence and celibacy listed on the slide and just randomly says something like "It's worked for me, well, not by choice I mean but...." trails off. The guy is in his 60s or so and man, it was so tragically funny. How inappropriate is it for my prof to tell the class about how he isn't getting any on the side. (he mentioned it twice too maybe he wants people to volunteer for some "extracurricular" so they can up their grades.)

That is all. midterm tomorrow aka study study, immunology.

Today i'm nursing a pretty nasty hangover, and probably will be all day. Yesterday was far more interesting.

I went shopping for gloves about 3, finally found some, bumped into a mate so ended up at the pub by 5, stayed for a few pints until my mate finishes work, after then we head to a japanese restaurant to get some food, then back to the pub for another beverage. By the time 7:30 rolls by we went into the theatre to see <a href="http://www.slavasnowshow.co.uk/" target="_blank">Slava's Snowshow</a>, an amazing show which is basically just clowns doing some pretty old fashioned clowining, not this circus-style slapstick crap, it was genuinely funny and featured some pretty awesome scenes.

After the show, covered in fake snow, we head to the pub next door for another beverage, then on to a bar for a few more. After being at this terrible bar drinking, we realised we all hated it and ended up back at another pub for a final drink. Eventually, absolutely wasted, i meander home and rub one out.

Today I was supposed to work my Virtual Reality project. But instead I took a break and played ET:Quake Wars Demo for 6 hours. Just stopped for a break and eating white rice with sea food sauce on it, heated. While eating, I decided to check on a few forums. Don't know if I'll go back playing. Might simply try to go back to model for my VW project.

    Smiling. Today was awesome.
Me and a couple of classmates got the basic idea for our media class movie down.
I got my latest English paper back, another '12' (highest grade).
I left an hour early to take a Motor cycle theory test, passed it with 4 wrongs out of 25 slide show images. (with 4 questions for each slide)
Tomorrow I will take my Car theory test, and hopefully pass it, and be even closer to getting a car driver's license.

I at work. writing code, contemplating the walk home in a few hours. Need to go by the Cell phone place because I seem to have horribly broken my phone at some point in the last few days.

I think i am gonna have to leave my office and go to

--- at that point a faculty member walked into my office with a question about how to make the projector in a classroom turn on. It turns out that the power button works wonders. After that I was then asked to how to pull the projection screen down. I demonstrated by pulling the screen down using the handle on the bottom..---

    Epic win.
