eep! pokemon reference! Don't even get me started on that... I bought Pokemon Pearl (everyone seems to have diamond) because the boys at work had started playing it and before I knew it I could barely concentrate for more than 3 minutes before my thoughts wandered back to what pokemon I'd need for my 'dream team' (they have to be effective in battle AND look pretty... harder than you think) and how I'd go about getting them :s
The wii actually has a few fun online things that don't really get mentioned much; am I the only one who finds the 'everyone votes!' channel strangely addictive? I've not been able to play for ages due to not having the interwebs but back when I did, seeing what everyone had voted for and if my prediction was right was something to look forward to each day after work :3
as for the gamecube library, it's not exactly a big library full of great games is it? I mean it has one or two nice games like Tales of Symphonia but overall it's a bit dire :/

The Everyone Votes! channel is really dull, and Emulators > Virtual Console. But if someone's missed out on Pikmin 1 and 2 I'd pick up a Wii just for them.

I quite like my Wii. I don't find that it is lacking in good games, the controller really tickles my fancy, the future is promising, and there is always a big ol' backlog of previous generations' games. What I miss from it (online shooters and indie games) I go to my PC for. They complement one another well.

That's probably the most concise way of describing what I'd like from a console. Something to alternate my PC tastes. This PS2 talk is also very interesting. I have a friend who said I could use his since he has a PS3. So I think I'm going to try it out and see if I like it.
My moral stance on emulation is, well, immoral. I don't think I'd buy a gamecube controller just to buy older games either, I'm really more interested in the motion sensitive wii style of control.

i'd have say either a wii or a ps3 - depends what your pc is like - if you have a good pc then i probably wouldnt bother with xbox360 or ps3 (atleast not until some of the blockbusters come out , re5 and mgs4 etc)
I myself have a wii - its good for a social / casual game mostly with games like mario strikers - i'm really into first person shooters on the wii, 1 the controls are wrist hurty (even after a year) or dizzying, but mainly the graphics just don't comapre.
The Wii's library is somewhat lacking currently-the only must-have games are Zelda(unless you have it for GC) and Metroid(and I don't even have that!(yet)), but in November Mario Galaxy will come out and will shatter the gaming, or maybe just whole, world(and sell many thousands of Wii's) with its incredible gameplay and mindboggling fun. Smash Bros Brawl comes out in December for any and all fun when you have people over.
The Virtual Console is really good if you don't believe in emulators(and even if you do playing on a TV, with a controller, beats them)
And of course the main talking-point of the system, it has great party games, and your grandma can play them. Mario Kart is coming out (Q1?) next year. See smash bros.
I got a Wii on launch day. Beat Zelda in 50-60 hours in the first week. Started another file and beat it. Started another file and got to the master sword. I then played a mix of Gamecube titles(never owned one)-hello Resident Evil 4(which was ported to Wii and is apparently very good, if rather easy with the new controls).

I recently bought a PS3 and I'm very happy with it. I wanted to replace my media player and with the recent disasters with 360 reliability I decided to avoid it. The PS3 is easily the best of the three for a home media center. I don't really care for blu-ray movies much, but it is a nice bonus. If you live in europe you can get playtv early next year and turn your ps3 into a tivo with the free-to-air stuff in Europe. The remote play on the PSP is neat, but I won't be buying a psp especially for it. At the moment I have borrowed my brother's psp to check it out.
As for games, right now the only really exciting game for me on the ps3 is Warhawk. It's a very very good team based fps with very a arcadey flightsim. I got Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Resistance: Fall of Man and Motorstorm free with the console, and sony sent me Casino Royale on blu-ray for signing up to the playstation network. Of the three free games, Ninja Gaiden is definitely the best. I also got addicted to this inane little puzzle game called Loco Roco Cocoreccho. And Super Stardust HD is a very good two-thumb blaster in the same style as geometry wars. I played a bit of gauntlet II online too.
The PS3 is also very very strong on the interop front. You can replace the internal hard-drive very easily without voiding the warranty. It works with most standard usb and bluetooth devices. I use an wireless logitceh kb and mouse for the web browser and it's handy at times. You aren't locked in with all the overly expensive MS peripherals too. You can use your bog standard bluetooth headset that you probably got free with your phone with the PS3, and I have a cheap-ass 300GB external hard-drive connected to it. The storage capacity of blu-ray is going to be a differentiator soon. COD4 will have much higher detail textures on the PS3 because of space limitations on the 360 dvd, for example. I also have ubuntu installed and it's cool in a totally unnecessary kind of way. I run mame on it, that's about it. The PS3 web browser is lacking somewhat, but still fairly functional.
One very important point for me too was the noise. The 360 sounds like a wind turbine when it gets hot, but the PS3 is very quiet.
The upcoming games that look good are: Wipeout HD ( which will include ranked network play ), Assassin's Creed ( also available on 360 and PC ), Little Big Planet ( which looks like some serious fun ), Haze ( a really interesting looking FPS ). There's some other good games knocking around that I'm personally not interested in - GT5 and Heavenly Sword. Unreal 3 will be a timed exclusive for the PS3 and it will allow kb and mouse control and ut3 mods will work on the ps3 ( mod support currently not planned for 360 but rumours are that it will happen ).
The XBL live network is currently far better than the Playstation Network. PSN is still a little light on content, but I see that changing over time. The PSN is free and much more open, gaming communities will be able to host their own dedicated servers for games that support it. I'm not convinced that Playstation Home will be much to get excited about. It's a sort of virtual world integrated into the playstation platform. Think second life meets xfire.
The only 360 game I'm really going to miss is Mass Effect, which looks like something special. I'll probably get a chance to play it on my brother's 360 when he finally comes out of his halo 3 cocoon.
I would advise against getting a wii if you want anything like a PC gaming experience. The novelty of the wiimote wears off fairly quickly, and at this stage there isn't much more too the wii, though I do think that will change as the industry reacts to explosion in wii ownership.
One important point though: There is definately a new PS3 SKU in production. The rumour is it will be $399 for a 40GB PS3 with no flash card or memory card readers, and possibly only 1 usb port ( but a standard usb hub will work with it ).
I think that if you just want a simple system that delivers good online play and nothing else, then the 360 is the one to go for right now. If there's a price cut on the PS3 then it is worth considering. If you want something more than just a games console then the PS3 has a lot of very good features to look at.
Here's some little big planet to check out. Read up on this game. It's from the Ragdoll Kungfu guys and has some really amazing looking sandbox fun. That's a user built level they are playing <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

It's just the snes... it has... SO MANY GAMES TO CHOOSE FROM! the list just dosen't end!
The Gamecube also has a couple good games, still i wasted all my money on Sonic Collection, Sonic adventure 1 & 2.... never been so dissapointed in my entire life... I wish the gaming industry would start using Roms again. The CDs break so easily.
Don't listen to the non believers. Pick the Wii, because it's the will of the swarm. Also, nintendo has been here from the start. and... let's just say I know they deliver quality. (What? Gamecube? Don't be silly. I know no such thing...)

Using the PS3 as a media center is nice and all but can't you do it all sans blu-ray with a PC?
I use my PC through my 32" widescreen HD television and it's great for watching movies on; especially as I run the sound output through my cinema 6.1 amp :3
for me; if you're going to buy a Game console and you have a PC then the media side of things is fairly irrelevant. You should be buying a specialised gaming machine for that 'fun on the couch' experience or 'games with friends round' thang.
I have to agree with puzl, i bought a PS3 last month for the grand old fee of £425 as it was my biggest ever paycheck at me new job so i thought why not lol.
Comes with wireless built in the XB360 does not, its got a card reader and 60gb HD which the XB360 does not, the internet is free on it, not so on the XB360 and you get a blu-ray player built in while you have to buy the HD-DVD player for the XB360.
Once you tally up everything built in and buying the extras on the XB360 they come out at the same price.
Problem is as mentioned the internet browser and online capabilities are limited at best, the selection of games currently out is lacking and it's going to be about 2-3 years before we start seeing the full potential of the console. I bought it on a whim but i don't think i'd want to change it for a XB360 lol. I got resistance fall of men with it which i enjoyed playing through with a m8 on co-op, darkness which is amazing gory and fun. and armoured core 4 which i played for 2 mins and thought it's not finished lol.
I recently chose the Wii over the 360, the PS3 didn't even get a look in.
As graphically powerful and visually attractive as Xbox/PS3 games can look a good majority of the worthwhile ones can be played on PC looking just as sharp, using a better control system (or the same for a small price of a controller/usb plugin) and the added bonus of being free for online play and customisable. And like Gem said, want a Blue ray player or a home media center? That's what my desktop and laptop pc's are there for.
The Wii may not have a huge selection of games but since buying it I already own Resident Evil 4 and MoH Vanguard which aren't scrappy in appearance at all. I already have a wishlist of a host of games which looks as graphically good as rival console games including Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, Fifa 2008, Call of Duty 3, Zelda, Scarface and Red Steel which are either released or coming very soon. There are also the fun games released/soon such as My Sims, super paper mario etc. as graphically as they don't please, they will sure as hell be better fun than some GTA knock off I saw on Xbox 360 the other day.
I know Manhunt is also planned for the Wii along with Medal of Honour Heroes 2, NFS: Pro Street, Brother in Arms, Tomb Raider Anniversary and even a Final Fantasy game by the end of 2007.
Also a Donkey Kong game seems to finally be coming to Wii too along with a very own Wii Kirby game and for those wanting media centers there is a piece of X-OOM software being released for movies/music soon enough.
It may be taking it's time but Wii is getting some good quality cross-platform titles, good quality exclusives and it's own home-brand nintendo titles. I don't suppose it's the easiest platform to do controls for which is quite possibly the slow down for all the latest games compatible for it, however I know recently EA delayed FIFA 08 til it's release date last week because it wanted to release a Wii version on time, that was control problems if I remember correctly.
So there you have it, the Wii is sold.
EDIT: I almost forgot the most important thing. Star Wars The Force Unleashed coming in spring with Wii-mote light sabre awesomeness!

RE4 is amazing on the Wii. It was my first time playing through. The only fault I can find with it is that I sort of got burned out of it by the time I got to the castle and the island. The first 2/3 or so just felt much more cinematic.
That said, here's Nintendo's big 'september surprise' Reggie was talking about.

I liked RE4 alright, but I'm not one of the people who thought it was soo awesome. I thought in general it was pretty standard survival horror fare. I bet it IS more fun with the Wiimote though.
I think what we really need is a new Parasite Eve. survival horror/RPG ftw. the settings in the first game were pretty awesome too, as is the story concept.

The reason why RE4 works so well with the wiimote is, that you dont move and shoot at the same time. You are either moving or shooting. This is what makes it so awesome on the wii.

What? No. RE4 was an action game, it even says right there on the box "Forget survival horror, this is an action game". To me survival horror implies a lot more running and a lot less gunning, which personally I find a little boring. What's the point of an endless horde of zombies if you're only going to give me enough ammo to deal with the bosses? At best, RE4 was survival horror-<i>ish</i>; you had to conserve your ammo, but not to the point that you were running from every other bad guy.
I'm definitely going to be getting the Wii version, even though I already own it for the PS2. I <3 any game which allows me to shoot a zombie in the crotch and then follow up with a HEAD EXPLODING ROUNDHOUSE TO THE FAEC!
RE4 was a little more action-y than previous RE games, but not enough to call it a whole different game or genre, imo... you still had to kill most of the mutants in RE2 just like you do in RE4, they just jump out at you and surprise you less in RE4. ammo is a little more plentiful in RE4 but you still have to conserve...
I am tempted to get it for the wii though even though I too have it for the PS2. I guess you just aim with the wiimote as though it were a shooting gallery?

The upcoming games that look good are: Wipeout HD ( which will include ranked network play ), Assassin's Creed ( also available on 360 and PC ), Little Big Planet ( which looks like some serious fun ), Haze ( a really interesting looking FPS ). There's some other good games knocking around that I'm personally not interested in - GT5 and Heavenly Sword. Unreal 3 will be a timed exclusive for the PS3 and it will allow kb and mouse control and ut3 mods will work on the ps3 ( mod support currently not planned for 360 but rumours are that it will happen ).
The XBL live network is currently far better than the Playstation Network. PSN is still a little light on content, but I see that changing over time. The PSN is free and much more open, gaming communities will be able to host their own dedicated servers for games that support it.
I'm not convinced that Playstation Home will be much to get excited about. It's a sort of virtual world integrated into the playstation platform. Think second life meets xfire.
The only 360 game I'm really going to miss is Mass Effect, which looks like something special. I'll probably get a chance to play it on my brother's 360 when he finally comes out of his halo 3 cocoon.
I would advise against getting a wii if you want anything like a PC gaming experience. The novelty of the wiimote wears off fairly quickly, and at this stage there isn't much more too the wii, though I do think that will change as the industry reacts to explosion in wii ownership.
One important point though: There is definately a new PS3 SKU in production. The rumour is it will be $399 for a 40GB PS3 with no flash card or memory card readers, and possibly only 1 usb port ( but a standard usb hub will work with it ).
I think that if you just want a simple system that delivers good online play and nothing else, then the 360 is the one to go for right now. If there's a price cut on the PS3 then it is worth considering. If you want something more than just a games console then the PS3 has a lot of very good features to look at.
Here's some little big planet to check out. Read up on this game. It's from the Ragdoll Kungfu guys and has some really amazing looking sandbox fun. The Gamecube also has a couple good games, still i wasted all my money on Sonic Collection, Sonic adventure 1 & 2.... never been so dissapointed in my entire life... I wish the gaming industry would start using Roms again. The CDs break so easily.
Don't listen to the non believers. Pick the Wii, because it's the will of the swarm. Also, nintendo has been here from the start. and... let's just say I know they deliver quality. (What? Gamecube? Don't be silly. I know no such thing...)

I use my PC through my 32" widescreen HD television and it's great for watching movies on; especially as I run the sound output through my cinema 6.1 amp :3
for me; if you're going to buy a Game console and you have a PC then the media side of things is fairly irrelevant. You should be buying a specialised gaming machine for that 'fun on the couch' experience or 'games with friends round' thang.
Comes with wireless built in the XB360 does not, its got a card reader and 60gb HD which the XB360 does not, the internet is free on it, not so on the XB360 and you get a blu-ray player built in while you have to buy the HD-DVD player for the XB360.
Once you tally up everything built in and buying the extras on the XB360 they come out at the same price.
Problem is as mentioned the internet browser and online capabilities are limited at best, the selection of games currently out is lacking and it's going to be about 2-3 years before we start seeing the full potential of the console. I bought it on a whim but i don't think i'd want to change it for a XB360 lol. I got resistance fall of men with it which i enjoyed playing through with a m8 on co-op, darkness which is amazing gory and fun. and armoured core 4 which i played for 2 mins and thought it's not finished lol.
As graphically powerful and visually attractive as Xbox/PS3 games can look a good majority of the worthwhile ones can be played on PC looking just as sharp, using a better control system (or the same for a small price of a controller/usb plugin) and the added bonus of being free for online play and customisable. And like Gem said, want a Blue ray player or a home media center? That's what my desktop and laptop pc's are there for.
The Wii may not have a huge selection of games but since buying it I already own Resident Evil 4 and MoH Vanguard which aren't scrappy in appearance at all. I already have a wishlist of a host of games which looks as graphically good as rival console games including Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles, Fifa 2008, Call of Duty 3, Zelda, Scarface and Red Steel which are either released or coming very soon. There are also the fun games released/soon such as My Sims, super paper mario etc. as graphically as they don't please, they will sure as hell be better fun than some GTA knock off I saw on Xbox 360 the other day.
I know Manhunt is also planned for the Wii along with Medal of Honour Heroes 2, NFS: Pro Street, Brother in Arms, Tomb Raider Anniversary and even a Final Fantasy game by the end of 2007.
Also a Donkey Kong game seems to finally be coming to Wii too along with a very own Wii Kirby game and for those wanting media centers there is a piece of X-OOM software being released for movies/music soon enough.
It may be taking it's time but Wii is getting some good quality cross-platform titles, good quality exclusives and it's own home-brand nintendo titles. I don't suppose it's the easiest platform to do controls for which is quite possibly the slow down for all the latest games compatible for it, however I know recently EA delayed FIFA 08 til it's release date last week because it wanted to release a Wii version on time, that was control problems if I remember correctly.
So there you have it, the Wii is sold.
EDIT: I almost forgot the most important thing. Star Wars The Force Unleashed coming in spring with Wii-mote light sabre awesomeness!
RE4 is amazing on the Wii. It was my first time playing through. The only fault I can find with it is that I sort of got burned out of it by the time I got to the castle and the island. The first 2/3 or so just felt much more cinematic.
That said, here's Nintendo's big 'september surprise' Reggie was talking about.

I think what we really need is a new Parasite Eve. survival horror/RPG ftw. the settings in the first game were pretty awesome too, as is the story concept.

The reason why RE4 works so well with the wiimote is, that you dont move and shoot at the same time. You are either moving or shooting. This is what makes it so awesome on the wii.
Before playing it you have to imagine it doesn't bare the name RE, it's not an RE game and it shouldn't have ever been.
What? No. RE4 was an action game, it even says right there on the box "Forget survival horror, this is an action game". To me survival horror implies a lot more running and a lot less gunning, which personally I find a little boring. What's the point of an endless horde of zombies if you're only going to give me enough ammo to deal with the bosses? At best, RE4 was survival horror-<i>ish</i>; you had to conserve your ammo, but not to the point that you were running from every other bad guy.
I'm definitely going to be getting the Wii version, even though I already own it for the PS2. I <3 any game which allows me to shoot a zombie in the crotch and then follow up with a HEAD EXPLODING ROUNDHOUSE TO THE FAEC!
