lerk lift

<div class="IPBDescription">a more balanced idea</div>Lerk lift was quite a good idea in NS, but not balanced (in my opinion at least).

My idea - allow lerks (or whatever flying aliens there are in NS2) to crash into marines, using their momentum to knock them over (preventing the marines from doing anything for a short while). I've never seen anything like this in source games, so it may not be easy or even possible... but it would be good at least if players could knock each other around (including onos's sending marines flying, etc). If this kind of thing is possible, it could include heavy marines being knocked a bit by lerks and standard marines being knocked right over, maybe being knocked off high points like raised walkways (a defensive advantage for aliens on some maps?).

Another idea could be to have a larger flying alien which has no direct attacks except perhaps an acid bomb, but can lift and carry aliens and marines, and can do some of the things a gorge can (maybe heal and help build, and possibly have a limited build menu itself). This idea probably isn't that good though.

Feedback anyone?

I could see a marine getting stunned by a flying lerk crashing into them, would add an element of suprise but one thing that would have to looked at is if it crashed into a group of marines........wouldn't want to see a squad stunned because of 1 hit.

    But sounds good.

Nah, should be. I'm no programmer but if you can get knocked around in WoW, for example, you should be able to code it into a Source engine as well - I'd assume Source to be much more versatile. Just have the player model fall down towards where it was pushed, and then get back up - the player's 1st person "camera" does the same. If there's a wall or an obstruction, just don't have the model actually fall, just get pushed towards it and be stunned next to it for a while.

Actually, now that I think about it, while it certainly should be possible, it'd be a whole lot of work. Essentially if you were to have fairly realistic 1st person camera animations, the player could be pushed/falling forwards (movement 90 degrees in front of you), backwards (90 back...), or either side (90 left, 90 right). The falling animation for the player model could maybe be done with ragdoll physics, but there could be problems with the getting up animation.

So, it would probably be a lot of work and possibly difficult even. I can't help but to think, however... if the marine really would be knocked towards some direction, and there happened to be a pit or drop right there. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I've noticed that the Lerk and Gorge are support aliens (Especially near the end of the round.) While the Skulk, Fade, and Onos are the Assault variety. Adding another support alien in my opinion would be mostly useless. Yet the fact that the alien would be larger and fatter than a gorge, would be amusing to me in some cases. I would imagine a fat plump gorge-like thing, straining its wings just to fly across a room. Knocking Marines over here and there with its gasses and weight. Dropping Offence Chambers everywhere.

    That would make my day.

Using physics rather than static animations should be a lot less work (since source uses havok anyway) and more realistic. But getting up again could be difficult.

Well, the base of the idea was to have two flying aliens instead of the lerk - a combat one and a support one (which I described). However going by what information has already been released I don't expect there to be any new lifeforms in NS2 - not that it would be easy to improve upon the NS1 lifeforms anyway.

i think this would disadvantage the lerk. once it hits the marine it would lose momentum, leaving it vulnerable to attacks from other marines.

in reference to HL2 physics and the old lerk-lift, what if the lerk could pick up a heavy-ish object (computer monitor, small crate etc) and drop it on the marines? it wouldnt kill a full HP marine, but would knock them over a bit, and deal a fair bit of dammage...

I thought lerk lift was a good idea overall but it is a pain to see a lerk fly around with a gorge once they have 3 hives and just make pases through a base doing bile bombs. However it is a good idea and does work very well. I do like the idea and I would like to see some variation on it in NS2. What I do like is the idea of a lerk grabbing whatever it can find to fling at it's enemies as it spews gas and such as well. I don't see how that would unbalance things as long as marines are able to side step as a decent speed to miss them at times. I would like to see a Marine get knocked over from a computer moniter or something hitting him. I think it would some realism to the game to be really "penalized" in a sense if you are not aware of what is happening and get knocked over and can't do anything for a moment.

I still want to see an Onos rampage through a base knocking over anything not wielded down. That should be mighty amusing. Plus it would be great if when he kills a Marine there's a couple animations such as stomping right on them, impaling them, etc.

I think this idea if refined so that it flows with the game could be awesome ! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
I'm picturing two or three lerks flying out of a corridor through a squad of heavies to knock them about a little and then an onos charges through and finishes the job <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

i think a lerk hitting a HA would be like a pigeon hitting a lamppost

lerk lift is terrible, the only thing i do on ns_lost is picking up eggs/gorges and dropping them into the pit.
  • schkorpioschkorpio I can mspaint Join Date: 2003-05-23 Member: 16635Members
thats like saying the ability to walk around is terrible because I can block a door way lol

Lerk lift is Great but needs the following adjustments

    1. Egg and Gorge only, ONOS is just stupid plus way to over powered (had it on a CO server and the two where unstoppable)
    2. Lerk and target must both press use to prevent abuse (i.e. kazan dropping you into a pit)
3 The lerk must move slower, he is carrying a pay load hence flying is harder work
4 JP should be able to boost vannilla marines in the same fashtion, maybe even HA but only a very short distance.

If you want to have players pushing marines around then its should be based on size and health/armour. The pusher should also slow down.

also what if lerk lifting uses up adrenaline, depending on weight.

SO you can lift an onos - but only for like 5 seconds until your energy is completely depleted. the smaller the life form the longer you can hold <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Compare that to a regular bird carrying a labrador (dog) for 5 seconds. Do you think that would work?

I think its a good idea for knocking over light marines, and being able to only pick up gorges and skulks(even though they walk on walls lerks can get places faster, but a little slower sence its carrying a skulk but it will have the skulk as back up) picking up eggs and anything else is retarted tho. Marines SHOULD NOT pick up anything thats like a 200 pound man grabing and holding another 200 pound person when a jet pack ment for ONE boosts them up. Marines are alread OP (overpowerd) as it is, and the only reason people hate / dislike LL is because it gives aliens a chance.
Eggs too are rooted into infestation, unless the lerk plans on killing the alien (basicly my theory is the infestation is like a chicken sitting on the egg) than I suggest lifting eggs a no no (people would gestate to onos just to get lifted by a lerk and get there faster)

I wouldn't be risking a 100res alien like that, what if the lerk gets shot and your onos get is left in the open to be knifed <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> then you would really be saying OH NOES!

I also like the idea that both the lifter and the lifte have to press e to get picked up.
