And well, after a long trial of meh, this wonderful country, which i already love :< I have to leave. I will be getting no citizenship, as there is a recent law in place, to stop immigrants being adopted. then emancipating at 18. and reuniting with theyre old family in *cough* mexico. and then bringing them over. so when you are adopted you give up birth rights, so i got caught up in that law. and as such my claim to citizenship has been denied.

NOW onto the point at hand. I am going back, goddamnit, im going back with something good. i sold my old pc before i came out, it wasnt that good, and i managed to flog it for 200 quid.

So, now, im after a pc to take back, for Gaming. the best i can get for like $750 max. now, the reason im asking you, is not cos im too lazy to search, i just dont know "the sites" to go to, for eg, in the uk, i had overclockers etc, and i dont know where to get cheap pc setups and parts from here. only place ive found so far is BestBuy, they seem to be OK, but im sure i can get cheaper stuff.

Its for nothing more then games/messing around. so only important bits is processor? 2-3 gig ram. and a decent gfx card.

I'm not all that savvy with pc's so any help anyone can give me would be appreciated.

    psh, that sucks that they're deporting you -_- I thought there were ways to get semi-permanent visas and such, but I have no clue how that stuff works... you could always marry an american chick for citizenship ;p

    why do you want to buy a PC over here and bring it back with you rather than just buying back in the UK? a lot of us just mail-order our PCs and parts anyway, from newegg.com and stuff...

    I know just how hard it is to get US Citizenship/greencard status/whatever visa, due to working with a number of Indians.

    Well, for buying a computer here, your options are:
    Newegg.com is generally the best online retailer.

    If you wana actually BUY it in person, then I would suggest hunting your local area and picking one up from one of the local vendors.

    The other note is about transporting a PC:
    Do it in PIECES!

    Personally I would say that you should buy the parts, keep them in their antistatic bags, wrap em up in shirts (and or bubble wrap if you have it) and take them all as carry ons.

    Not sure about shipping the PC in pieces. I am reminded of an incident that happened a year ago when my friend in Atlanta shipped me a new hdd via UPS in its original packing material. I don't know if it was seized because it was from a person and not a business but they said it was of suspicious content and never did ship it on to me, or return it to him. Instead they paid his claim.

    Sorry to hear of your bad luck Moquiao, I was gonna look you up when I visit Hudson soon. Btw, how did you sell your PC in the U.S.A. for "quid"?!?

    Newegg.com almost always has the cheapest prices on everything. As for shipping a PC, what I did was disassemble it, put everything in the original packaging plus a lot of bubble wrap, then throw everything except the case into a big box full of packing peanuts. Everything arrived fine.

    Yes, sorry i sold the pc before i left, cos i wasnt planning on coming back you see, and the reason for buying here is, it seems to be alot cheaper with mid market pc's when you get up to quad core stuff the price is pretty similar, but you can get a decent rig here for like 350 quid - 400 ( 700-800$) and in the uk the same setup can cost 650+ quid.

    Aside from changing the psu, it should run fine right? and im confused as regards to shipping, i was just going to take it back on the plane with me, since i only took 1 of the 2 allowable bags?

    i was looking for a retail outlet, as opposed to online, since i have no idea how long my stay here shall remain :<

    I have sweet f all knowledge about customs and theyre processes so any advice on that would be good, i assume thats what you meant by in pieces... but, why cant i just buy it here, and take it in a suitcase as my 2nd bag? i can remove the PSU beforehand and claim it as my own cant i? OR just ship it over? even IF customs get it, would they charge all that much?

    If you want to carry the PC back with you that would theoretically work, but you have 3 rather large problems.

    Problem 1: If you just stick it in luggage, it's going to be manhandled like a pinata at a children's birthday party. Airport baggage handlers are one step away from football players when it comes to handling luggage. They have baseball bats that they use to whack luggage around when they get bored. Sometimes they run it over with a truck. So to ensure any kind of safety at all you'd have to carry it on.

    Problem 2: The moment you stick your PC carry on in the X-ray machine, you've got an approximately 40-60% chance of being tackled by two men in dark suits and sunglasses, bound in handcuffs, and taken to Guantanamo Bay for 15 years, because the motherboard, video card, etc basically look like bombs (it's the circuit boards). You'll have to explain very slowly and carefully, with small words, that you are taking a computer onto the airplane and that the computer is not dangerous. Don't say it's not a bomb, because just saying bomb earns you a nightstick in the crotch.

    Problem 3: Once you make it past security by throwing the PC over the metal detector while nobody's looking and following nonchalantly after it, you're going to have a PC as a carry on item. I don't know what case you'll be using but that's going to be rather close to the maximum size of a carry on. It might even be larger, which means you're boned. In any case, it's unlikely you'll be able to fit it under the seat unless you fly First Class, and I won't even mention the overheads (it would get banged around like nobody's business). The upshot is that you've introduced a rather large box full of expensive computer parts into the already cramped airplane. You won't make any new friends ont he flight over.

    As for buying the thing, actual brick and mortar stores are so ridiculously expensive compared to Newegg et. al. your only option is to troll all the nearest stores and only buy the items that are on "MEGA SALE" or something, assembling a PC bit by bit. Best Buy, CompUSA, Fry's Electronics, Circuit City, even local computer stores, are where you want to go to do this.

    Don't forget it's unlikely you'll be able to get away with not paying import tax on a $750 machine (as in there's nowhere you can hide it).

    Ok, so aside from the possible import tax.

    1, dismantle it. packing peanuts.
    2, do i say its mine to customs? i can just leave the psu behind, and claim i brought it? or will they have a record of it being brought in?

    so confused here :< seems its not as simple as buy + ship back.
