Has anyone ever brought their own cable modem to use at college? Because the wifi at my college is kind of slow and I'm thinking of doing this. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> And, could I get in trouble for this?

    just because there's cable TV at college doesn't mean you can get the internets through that cable line. chances are you can't. many colleges do have built-in wired internet as well as wireless though. Is there an ethernet jack built into the wall anywhere?

    Most colleges have the ethernet, yeah. That's what mine has. And even if you brought a moden ISPs might nto be able to offer service to you on the campus.

    Plugging your modem into the cable outlet won't do anything, you would have to register it with the cable company which wouldn't allow you to anyway since you are on the campus.

    However you CAN bring your own wireless router and hook it up to the built in ethernet the rooms should have, and use it as your own personal wireless beacon. That's what Im doing right now infact.

    I'm not sure what the policies are now, but when I lived on campus, hooking up a router was not allowed. Plenty of people did it anyway, but people that didn't know what they were doing would cause the entire campus network to get screwed up when they tried it (or so I heard; possibly due to a bad setup for the dorm network, but I don't know enough about it to really know). So, if you're going to hook up a router, make sure you know the rules first.

    Additionally, in some places this is grounds for losing your jack as well. (hooray you lost Ethernet!)

    At least where I went to school it was, particularly if one, say just as example, ran a counterstrike server on it.
