New Marine Flashlight

<div class="IPBDescription">please, let there be light.</div>I'm probably going to try my hand at mapping when the NS2TR comes out, and I was thinking about how awesome it would be to have:

A <b>New Marine Flashlight That Doesn't Look Silly or Stupid and Actually Works Really Well</b>.

<u>Is this going to be a priority so that mappers can field game-balanced uber-dark rooms</u>?

All of NS maps currently have is light-light-light-light-light-light-light-<u>light-light...etc etc ad infinitum</u>. It'd be nice to have a few 'cave-like' rooms where flashlight would become needed (ie, blackness in some rooms). We're talking...Black, like WTF--I don't want to go in there.

NS2 is set in space (very dark) sometimes, and it'd be nice to have the option of 'power-off' 'power-on' rooms. =D

    Nightvision would be a step up, why use a flashlight :S or maybe have nightvision as an upgrade option from the armoury.

    +1, +1, and again, and again, and one more +1.

    A flashlist set as a weapon ( cf : Doom III ) can be nice ( Maglite is l33t ). Just with one little circle, that gives you too choices :

    1. I can see what is happening, I can't defend myself, and if i'm under attack, i'll see it, but i'll die. Or :
    2. I can't see anything, but I can defend myself ! If i'm under attack, I won't see it, and i'll die.

    That is my best feeling in games like AvP2 or Doom III. Dynamic flashlights, you know the thing.

    okay, but i think the light should illuminate everything in perefferal vision (a bit) then a lot more in teh direct beaM

    I think if aliens get it shone in their eyes, or marines, it would be really glarey and hard to see. itd give a strategtic upside to using it in battle. not to mention the obvious downside.

    maybe upgrade the flashlight to...like the aliens have, just light the people up instead of a tiny little light. Like heatvision goggles or something.

    I remember reading when the infestation takes over rooms the lights go out, so having pitch black rooms is more than a possibility. I think they should keep the humble flash-light since I feel night vision would kill the atmosphere of the game, expecially since the lighting in this game will be fantastic with the Source engine.

    And maybe have some flares or light emmitting grenades to spruce it up

    yea, have some kind of flare you can get an upgrade for at the armory, maybe the flare can burn a little hole in the DI lol.

    Thatd be a bit complex, and dynamic light sources, youll have to be careful with them.

    If youve ever played garrys mod, and created a couple of dynamic lights, 10 or so even, youll know it can lag.

    But itd be cool if you could throw flares, then pick em up and throw em again.

    And skulks can eat them! at the expense of 15hp haha.

    Source fixed the problem that almost all HL1 based games/mods had: The glowing lattern flashlight.

    So maybe people will actually use it in NS2.

    well by the look of the concept art i'd say ns2 will have much more atmospheric lighting in the maps, and i hope the flashlight will be used to assist in visibility, but i'd hate to see it as a necessity to have your light on.

    im still pro nightvisions and stuff, or eventually even something similar with the aliens flashlight. but the marine ones needs energy, like you prossibly know it from the default HL1 flashlight. you start with 0 energy, and get some every few sec. as soon as you turn the flashlight on, you lose energy. so noone will use it 24/7 etc.

    but the marine flashlight would definitly need a boost, in case the aliens one is being kept or even boosted, since its much more worth than the marine one

    upgraded lighting, yes. flashlight as a selectible weapon like in doom III, NO! In that game, at least, the atmosphere and tension created by this feature was eventually taken over by sheer frustration. Come ON! This is the future people! even today soldiers can have flashlights ATTACHED TO THIER GUN! Not to mention night vision... yet another technology that exists today. They have a visor.... wouldnt that give nightvision?

    However the new lighting is implemented i just cant wait to see it, it will be beautiful whatever decision they make.

    I just think a selectible flashlight would be frustrating and disadvantage marines way too much. THink about it: Aliens enjoy enhanced vision and access to "weapons" 100% of the time, marines have access about half the time.

    actually i wish games did darkness the same way a lot of 80s movies do night time scenes, its kinda dark, but everything is kinda blue so you can make out everything fine it just feels dark and makes a great atmosphere.

    WHatabout all the rooms with light thats almost failing and flashing once and a while while the lamp is swinging slightly because of wind (Fear'ish)

    My only worry would be if it turned into a Doom 3 flashlight SUCK-athon! ###### duide, I don't think I would play the game. I hate to even think that, but I really don't think I would. I never even finished Doom 3 because I wa so pissed off at the flashlight deal. I think they finally released a mod/hack to have it always on, but WTF?

    Please, PLEASE don't let this turn into a Doom3 flashlight situation. I say no matter where/how you mount it, it should be on or off, and not depend on if you are using a wepon!

    I don't think tehre's a chance in hell of Flayra following the stupidity of 'let's have the option of either firing my gun, or being able to see what I'm firing at--but not both muahhahahaha...

    I'm just hoping for a bit more atmospheric maps with a few 'dark' rooms that are gameplay balanced. As such, having flashlights (that show light properly...) and/or nightvision would be pretty cool.

    Dark rooms don't work well in online games. Most people just turn up their gamma or their monitor brightness. The NS mapping guidelines are much more appropriate IMHO.

    Of course, infrared goggles could be an armory upgrade and either dropable by the comm or permanent after the tech has upgraded. Keep the flashlight as standard as I still think it would be cool to walk around in a dark room searching for aliens with a crumby flashlight <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    It would be kinda cool if the flash light had like a red tint and was made to react with alien skin so if you pointed it at say a skulk, certain parts of the skulk would kinda shine light blue/green

    And again with the gamma cheat concerns... guys, gama exploiters usually only work if the available light is "turned up" in the games settings. So, mappers just need to put 0 lights in a room, corridor, hallways, area. Then, no matter how bright they make it, there is no light for the game to "amplify", the exploit does nothing!

    It would also then make the exploiters NOT want to use the gamma up slider, since then their screen would go from light to dark alot more, by them firinng in complete darkness. Try playing NS in the dark, and using a welder... You can only look at the strobing white light for so long until you have to change something in your room, or in the game [I have to hold my hand over my eyes in real life so I don't have a stroke! hehe]. So the exploiters would get a similar effect when they were fighting in these areas, and it would make them correct the gamma so their weapons fire wouldn't give them strokes either.

    I would love to see flashlights mounted to the guns. so you can see a round circle in front of you and all your peripheral vision is gone. Also I think it would be amazing if you could turn your light off and your eyes adjust to the darkness in low lighting conditions. No lighting conditions you still need the light.

    Another awesome thing maybe use a black light flashlight and have parts of the aliens light up under it or map creators can build black light signs drawn on the walls so you can find your way around the darkness.

    If a NS2 mapper made say--2 rooms, say one RT room somewhere near the middle of the map and one other room completely black with a little light coming into the edges of the room from other adjacent rooms--, then I don't see the problem in that. I've played FPS's for god-knows-how-long, and just because it's not convenient for the marines, doesn't mean it's bad. Think OC's, RT's with lots of HP, Oni, spores, etc. A couple of dark rooms in a -few- maps would not hurt anything, and I think it'd bring some additional, unique variety to this game.
    No, don't make Doom-style flashlights. No, don't make Doom-Style maps where everything goes pitchblack everywhere for no reason except to make it easy to sneak monter-spawns everywhere. No, dont make maps where the 2 dark rooms are right outside marine start. etc etc.
