<div class="IPBDescription">no threads on this game?</div>I'm surprised that there apparently haven't been any threads on this game, even though it got an average of 90/100 from reviewers. great RTS game, and I'm generally terrible at RTS games... came out on steam recently so I couldn't resist. so much talk about supreme commander and starcraft, where's the Company of heroes love? =p

one thing I like about it is that I can usually get by on missions by mostly building a ton of tanks =p most RTS games are rock/paper/scissors games where you have to micromanage a ton or you'll lose like 100 expensive units to like 5 of that unit's weakness... well, tanks are tough pretty much no matter how you slice em. they can chew through infantry, even the ones wielding AT weapons... and of course they can blast other tanks... and buildings... of course I'm sure the game is gonna get harder, and I would get creamed in multiplayer just like in any and all RTS games.

I guess I should say something about the game in case anyone hasn't heard of it. RTS game, WWII setting, great graphics, destructible environments, infantry can hide behind cover and in bombed-out buildings or arty craters, easy to play, hard to master, yada yada.

Just got it, haven't played it yet though.

I did however watch a review on XPlay which revealed an intresting twist to standard RTS games. Instead of resourse gathering/manage/mining units which are in every RTS known to man you simply have to take over resource points like tank factories, fuel/munitions depot. Which seems to be much more realistic and intriguing.

Z had that, you took over robot and tank creating factories and produced units with them, no resources.

Yes, but Z looks like it was before my time and flew in under the radar.

Every time I hear "Company of Heroes" or "City of Heroes" I immediately think of this game:

    <img src="http://z.about.com/d/compactiongames/1/0/T/1/freedom_force.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

    Cuz....You know...It's a company of heroes, right? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I bought this off of Steam when it came out, in anticipation of my new computer. When my headphones come tomorrow, it'll be a 24/7 CoH binge. Seems like this is a game that RTS noobies really like for some reason, but I'm mostly anticipating the awesome multiplayer, since that's where the real challenge is. Like you say, DiscoZombie, beating the computer is basically just a matter of "how many tanks can you build?"

    Actually, I have played the demo of CoH, and I did enjoy it. It's a solid game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

...But what it REALLY needs, is a mod so that I can have anachronistic Dreadnoughts from Dawn of War. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    "Sherman on the field!"
    <b>"I HAVE AWOKEN"</b>
    "Drive, drive or we're dead!"

I wish you can mute the Shermans. OH I WISH YOU CAN. Those guys make so much noise it's like the radio is just cluttered with:

"Drive! Drive! Drive or we're dead!"

On that point, I'd love to see Dawn of War implemented into the CoH engine variant, full stop. Or at least the CoH features (better vehicle control, squad cover, the map region control etc) implemented into DoW.

    Better vehicle controls :O?

Well, the controls might be better (can't remember really), but the pathfinding isn't really too good :/ You pretty much have to babysit them, due to the different armour values depending on which side they're shot.

Anyway, aye, a DoW2 in the CoH engine or similar :S Implementing some of the new features - and the awesome atmosphere.

I'd play CoH more if it didn't run like crap on my system <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> I think it's because of my poor ram (both speed and amount).

Kind of the point DHP. Tanks really DO have visibility issues, and do need ordering carefully in battle, especially in close terrain. They excel in open areas, where the pathfinding isn't an issue.

All the complaining that came from CoH in that regard, and the complaints (in a case of sweet irony) happen to be about possibly the most realistic aspect of the game. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I love the game, it takes all the good things from DoW and made a much better experience. I mostly played the campaign, and found that they sometimes give you a bit too much to handle. I really like the micromanagement aspect (moving the tanks around, placing your soldiers behind cover...) but it becomes a bit difficult to do over huge maps.

I've played the CoH campaign, and found it to be okay-ish. Some of the features are awesome (taking cover behind tank wrecks etc.) but I just didn't like the game very much.

i love CoH's gameplay- but for the opposite reason you do.

i like it because you <b>can</b> micromanage your way to victory. i do agree that nothing is more infuriating then playing a game like World in Conflict and realising that it's only a matter of time until you come up against a unit that will frag you (rock/paper/scissors), and CoH for the most part limits this.

e.g. on the demo skirmish the AI always goes for tanks, and 2 squads with the "Fire up!" (+speed) and sticky bomb upgrades can rip through tanks if they come up against the tank from 2 different directions.

also like the huge cost of units meaning there's few of them on the battlefield. less units = better management = better tactics (on my part anyway)

finally, the unit A.I. is great. they know when to move forwards to use cover or when to stay still.

the one thing i [b]hate[b] about CoH- and has made me hold off buying it- is the WW2 setting. it's been done to death and it's soooo boring playing in Generic French Village shooting Evil Faceless Axis Badguys.

i'm also suspect about RTS multiplayers. from my experience they get dominated by pros- much like NS. if there were newbie servers i'd probably overcome my boredom of WW2 and buy the game.

WWII *is* generally done to death in video games, but this is the only *good* WWII RTS game I can think of. The territory-based play, cover, and destructable environments make it pretty unique. it has some anacrhonistic elements too... unless I'm mistaken, no one used exploding remote controlled cars in WWII, or tanks with flamethrowers that shot 50 feet...

...actually, I just looked it up and apparently flamethrower tanks and remote controlled tank killing bombs DID exist... =p

Yeah, Company of Heroes doesn't play like a realistic wargame, but the setting and units are definitely true to life.

I think so, as far as I can remember.

I love CoH, it really is a brilliant game. I'd recommend watching Band of Brothers; it's totally inspired me to replay Company of Heroes through again. Hell, the last words on the final episode of Band of Brothers are 'I treasure my remark to a grandson who asked, "Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?" "No", I answered, "But I served in a <i>company of heroes</i>'. Quite fitting, I thought.

Ground Control II was pretty fun and had that resource gathering system. Taking over points and flying units in.

Funnily enough, I just installed CoH now. I didn't know the release version of the game didn't support SLI - I was freaking out because of how slow everything went.

They talk mostly english with german accent but occasionally throws in something like "achtung!" or "granate!".

Does it work playing on LAN yet? I had it installed before but it lagged the crap out of everything if more then 2 players duked it out over LAN.

German blitzkrieg for the effing win. Especially with king tigers.

can i get a used copy from ebay to work online or does CoH use accounts linked to CD keys?

The account is linked to CD keys; you'd have to hope the other person didn't use it.

It's only 30 bucks off Steam, though. Good deal for what is widely considered one of the best RTS games ever.

Meh, I was impressed at first, but I couldn't play it very long. Something about zooming in and watching a group of my engineers slug it out with some German engineers at pointblank for about 30 seconds before someone finally died that turned me off.

    Among other things.

I just played my first 2 multiplayer games yesterday. The first was a 1v1 "noobs only" game, but the other guy was even more of a noob and I basically just destroyed everything with flamethrowers and panzerfausts, so it wasn't much of a fight.

The second was a 2v2 o n some city map, and WOW. That was amazing. It must have lasted at least an hour, but it's all kind of a blur. All I know is that we pushed out early, and then our opponents counterattacked and penned us in to a little less than half the map. From there on it was a slow, brutal fight through the progressively more destroyed city streets, inching forwards a little bit at a time with 3 AT guns, a machinegun team, and two squads of riflemen to replenish the AT guns when the crews died. Eventually we managed to capture the center of the city, and I locked it down with the 3 AT guns and the machinegun crew, and sent the two riflemen, plus a squad of engineeers and whatever else I had, to break through the defenses they had set up in the south of the map. Once those crumbled, we pushed straight through and eventually broke their back. Good stuff.

The fight would have lasted about 5 seconds if one or both of them had had flamethrowers. Like DiscoZombie said, engineers aren't exactly the most powerful unit. They build and repair stuff.

Word is that Relic may well be doing a DoW2. And if they do, it'll use the CoH engine.

Also, the expansion is looking awesome! The Brits appear to be getting some really cool stuff. Like trenches, gliders, mobile artillary, officers, and an entire force dedicated to artillery. Should be good fun!

That's one of the things that bugged me about this game until I realized that this wasn't what I thought it was at very first. The units themselves are treated moreso like one individual unit in a battlefield rather than seperate beings working closely together. Monitor the health bar instead of looking at individual deaths and it's a little bit more informative.
