Lan Party Server

I'm hosting a LAN party this friday with a bunch of friends from school (sorry, full up), and I need to know how the hell to run a NS server.

I any of you know of any newb ( <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> ) server guide, I'd be thankful for the link.

I've found a bunch of stuff for tweaking here on the forum, but I also need a more genral overvew of commands etc.

Also, my rig is an Athlon XP 1900+ w/ 512 DDR: Can I handle a Non-Dedicated server, or should I dedicate my Athlon XP @ 1.2 Ghz w/ 384 DDR? Suggestions?

    I think you need to ask a more specific question. I don't think anyone is going to write a document on every aspect of hosting a server. Is there something in particular you want to know ?

    Okee, ummm howzabout...

    1) What programs should I run to get votes and fun stuff (Admin Mod), and keep things legit (HL Guard) and where do I get HLGuard?

    2) Before I can actually USE the commands, does anyone know of any reason why my console has stopped working?
    Everything was fine, and then one day (in CS)...
    "HAHAHA, oh wait, what did he say?"
    /me presses '~'
    /rig doesnt bring console down
    /me doesnt know what to do.
    "Damn."
    Fast forward 3months, still no console in CS, ive never needed it in NS. but i will for the server.
    Has this happened to anyone, and its a simple matter of changing <i>X</i>?

    Anyhow...

    3) Do i just start a server from the NS create LAN game menu, and make it dedicated, or do i run something through the dedicated server program, or through adminmod, or what?

    4) Why am i so retarded?! Sh!t, im so angry i dont know all this sh!t.

    if it's just a simple lan game,

    [you]
    just go to lan
    set the number of players
    choose map
    play

    [your buddies]
    go to lan
    either wait or refresh list and your comp will appear
    click and join

    oh make sure you have at least a 100mb network card running through a switch or router. hubs suck

    Yea, well that's whut ive started thinking, but i want all the stuff of Admin Mod.

    Neways, umm for the networking, i was PLANNINg on getting a bunch of friends to bring 4 port routers and daisychain them from mine. all are 10Mb, and everyone should have a 10/100 Nic card.

    Couple o' feet o' CAT5 and im set. Or so i think... will it be ok?

    why do the voting when your friends are in front of you? there might be some comptability issues with admin mod anyways. couple feet of cat5's are good enough. we're not talking about mission ciritical servers here, just recreational stuff. i would recommend do what ever you can to lower the cpu usage because you are playing a game while hosting a server.

    well thats also part of why i wanted to use adminmod, because i have machine i could dedicate as a server. the problem is that it is downstairs, while we;'re all upstairs. adminmod would be a 75 foot Homer Dialing Wand for the lazy man. I dont wanna run up and down. I COULD use my rig as listen host, but i want good performance, and I want to leave a NS server up while ppl spread among UT/CS. Also, I don't think anyone else has a machine to handle as listen, so i need my machine for various games, while the dedicated stays on NS.

    If i just install HLDS, Meta, and AdminMod, is it simple enough to just use the basics, or am i getting in over my scrawny neck at just doing that?

    without bothering with any kind of tweaking... unless my friends know how of course.

    I just got so damn excited about this shiznit, i didnt bother thinking about serving it... dang...

    hlds is already installed (comes with half-life). adminmod is easy to install. just follow the docs
