Moquiao, did ya decide to leave your computer over there?
    <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

yes, tbh, its not worth taking, 128 mb gfx card etc, only thing i want to keep, is my hdd, how are the rules on things? like, would they CHECK my hdd, if i took it with me on hand luggage or sth? cos it has... alot of things it shouldnt on, music/movies etc..

so im gonna give the main pc to my dad, he has always wanted another gaming machine xD

btw, on rough cost of living, what is it like over there? i mean, gimme a rough estimatin for an electric/wter bill etc, from what ive been told so far, the cost of living is quite cheap, you get more for your buck. like, say you spend... $50.. ina supermarket it goes ALOT further then £25 would in a british supermarket?

GIEF mountain dew. i have had to import it for years. ( <a href="http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_7632.html" target="_blank">http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_7632.html</a> )

EDIT: my dad plays all sorts, he tried CS, but the attitudes of people is dire, he likes DoD, his pc for some reason will not run DoD:S so my one will do that for him, upgraded it to source today for him, nice little late present, he also tried WoW, he enjoyed it, but it took him like half a year to get to lvl 47, and he was wearing dire armor etc, so he didnt really take to that. he quite enjoys battle for middle earth 2, due to the Risk style campaign play he is, 65 incase anyone wonders

Cost of living is going to be tough to reply to, unless you can find someone living in that area. Wait.... my Dad lives 25 miles from Woodstock so I can probably hit him up for gasoline / electricity rates etc. I DO know thet N.Y. state has one helluva state income tax though (Florida has none).

Mtn. Dew used to be my fave, before Code Red hit the market (a cherry flavored Mtn. Dew). I don't buy it unless I find a deal like 4/10 bucks, or even 5/10 bucks on rare occasion. That's 12 packs I'm referring to.

Gasoline in the region you're interested in is close to $3.00usd / gallon for unleaded regular.

    Checking on electric rates.

No matter where you are in the US, the cost of living will be much less than living in the UK.

Plus a sales tax of 9% here is considered outrageously high. I can't believe you Brits can stomach that 17.5% VAT. Be prepared to make more money and pay less of it to the government. Don't expect too much from the government either, they are there to get in your way and nothing more.

Welcome to the USA. You made the right choice!

California in general is very expensive IMHO. Rapier7 is right about cost of living in general, but it depends where. Big cities will always be very difficult to the poor financially-wise, but then again the wage is higher too. In any case you have to figure out money if you are going to survive. (and that goes for controlling your spending too, which is actually a big problem with many in the US, they spend too much)

If you want to live cheaply, stay the hell away from the bay area. Also, if you want weather. If you want cheap living and high quality of life, I'd say go to one of the midsized cities in the midwest. (Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, etc.)

Statistically, if you want to date girls go to the east coast. If you want to date dudes, go to the west coast. Don't know why that is, but it's true. <a href="http://creativeclass.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/04/03/singles_2.jpg" target="_blank">http://creativeclass.typepad.com/photos/un...3/singles_2.jpg</a>

What an odd coincidence, because I didn't get the memo where you were in charge of Off-Topic, either!

I guess that explains why I didn't realise that phrases like "Show us the other sides of you," and, "Be random, just keep it clean!" mean that people aren't allowed to talk about themselves, or, more importantly <b>ask other forum members for advice</b>.

We'll keep an eye out for those memos though, eh?

now quit trolling in the guy's thread.

Oh, last one, I keep on forgetting to mention this.

    Yanks == Northerners, specially NE.

It is also a derogatory term used by hicks from down south that are still sore over getting their arses handed to them in the civil war (proof of this would be their insistence of sticking the stupid confederate flag in car windows). So when you get over here, Yanks refers to a specific subs set of Americans, not all of us like it apparently does to Brits.

that's a nice bit of trivia but only in the deepest of the deep south and at civil war reenactments are you actually going to encounter an American who uses "yanks" as a derogatory term for northerners.

i lived in the Houston TX area for 12 years an traveled to many an off-road hick town, never once was my New Jersey acquired accent the source of a "yank" label, nor does anyone care about the civil war. admittedly i've never associated with someone who has a gun rack and confederate flag on the back of his pickup, though.

Don't forget that a large part of any videogame-related forum or online community is made up of those with little to no social skills. If you're a social butterfly or at least socially capable, you'll be fine doing your thing most places in the US.

    You're accusing me of nepotism?

Well, actually, I suppose you're just linking me to a definition of the word. Of course, Moquaio isn't a relative of mine, so I'm not sure why you're doing that, but that's not really important. There's probably a good reason that you're providing this link, as well as letting the participants of a four-page-long thread know that they're wasting their time. It certainly couldn't be that you want to belittle someone or act superior. <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?s=625398641048646400&showtopic=101939&view=findpost&p=1637913" target="_blank">We know how you hate that</a>.

Naturally, "yanks" is not the most pleasant of terms to use; I've certainly never liked it. Not sure what's that's got to do with me though. That regrettable term aside, there's nothing particularly objectionable here. I don't think a few paragraphs count as exhibitionism and certainly not as an autobiography. Those tend to be quite long, bound in paper and card and sold in bookshops.

Is it simply possible that you're just here to rain on someone's parade?

I sorta get the sense that at least some brits use the term Yanks the same way we use Brits or Euros. Not derogatory, just informal (admittedly, I could be wrong, and that seems to be the case with you atleast). Where as in the US it does have a flat out negative tone.

Well, that's the point, really. A lot of people over here don't realise that what they're saying is a negative and possibly even offensive thing. I don't think it's a majority thing (I haven't actually heard it spoken outside of a film in a while), but it does happen. There is sometimes a casual anti-American streak (although far, far less prevalent than I've seen places like Fox News report) that occasionally turns up here, and I expect the "yanks" thing, however intentional it may be, is probably part of it.

I find that as long as you don't act like a ###### it's fairly easy to get along with people almost everywhere. You're liable to get beat up in backwoods areas of the south if you mock Bush and attempt to convince them to relinquish their firearms, or something, but it's just not as bad over (t)here as the media wants you to think (unless it has degenerated substantially in the 3 months I've been away). Unless the US is is more screwed up than I thought and people in England can go up to random people and shout 'Gordon sucks, go back to Cornwall!' with no repercussions (or confusion...because I don't know UK voting patterns; a very small amount of research leads me to think 'go back to Kircaldy' would be better...).

New England is the Yanks, West Coast is the Surfers, Florida is the Retirees, Texas is the Cowboys. I'm not entirely sure what the Midwest, Plains and Eastern Rockies people are generally called, but I'm sure there's a term for us somewhere. Then again, I've never really used any of those terms to speak or really refer to anyone, anyway. I've only recently had the opportunity to refer to some British people as Brits...

I do enjoy the German's abbreviation of Ami (ah-mee), and I believe we should import it. It makes far more sense than Yank, simply because the country hasn't consisted of 'just Yanks' for about 200 years (and even then it's arguable).

You know what, just skip the whole USA-thing, it's all about Australia and kangaroos, 'oight?

finding work isn't always easy over here... easier to get the low-end jobs in the suburbs but easier to get the high-end jobs in the cities... I don't know what an electrical engineer does <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> but maybe you should do some job searching on monster.com or something before you make the trip, unless you have a nice nest egg to sit on for a few months once you get here...

New England is the Yanks, West Coast is the Surfers, Florida is the Retirees, Texas is the Cowboys. I'm not entirely sure what the Midwest, Plains and Eastern Rockies people are generally called, but I'm sure there's a term for us somewhere. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    Boring?

    That sounds about right <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> .

Maybe we're cow-tippers...but then again, I'm not sure anyone not from the Midwest even knows what cow tipping is (no, I have not done it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> ), so I'm not sure if they'd be able to call us Cow-Tippers. Just call us the American-Canadians or something...

...except that's not really much of a shortened slang term. Amcans? I don't know. 'The dudes in the Midwest', how 'bout that?
