Anyone still interested in HL2DM?

<div class="IPBDescription">Or maps thereof?</div>I used to do HL2DM map reviews (site's down at the moment, I'm too lazy to fix the code, this will have to end). It was going pretty good until I lost server access. I'm even more broke now than I was then, but I'm looking at <a href="http://www.gameservers.com" target="_blank">these guys</a>, and it doesn't seem bad. Thirty bucks a month for 16 slots and 20 slot ventrillo/teamspeak.

So, I'm wondering...

Do you think an HL2DM map review site (and always-up server) would still be worthwhile? I've sort of missed the boat on time, as it's been years since HL2 came out, but I feel like the community has suffered from lack of a good review site. I've always though that the Radium for HL1 was instrumental in getting all this stuff going.

Good, harsh and <i>fair</i> reviews create competition, and that's good for everyone. Whatcha think?

Comments/ Other server renter suggestions/ etc please!

This post is going to feel sorta off topic but is related to your question.

Anyone else feel that deathmatch has a died a pretty sudden death. I mean its still around but its not the mainstream of online gaming anymore. Even in LAN cafes the DM games that were the most popular this time last year havent been run in a few months and even then its the odd 1 off game.

Have people just got tired of killing each other for no real reason than to win?
    Or
Have people matured into killing people in groups hunting and working together to achieve a slightly higher objective?

A lot of me feels that maps are responsible for part of this because of the way they force people to play. Perhaps some information on stray custom DM maps could bring back some of the spark fun of DM.

I don't play DM as much as I used to (read: I don't play it at all now), but I have made a small HL2DM map, dm_grace.

Do it. I think it's a good idea, and as long as people are aware of it, it'll give them an incentive to create and submit levels for it.

Interlopers and Snarkpit still have HL2DM interest for sure. So go for it.

I'll guess I'll dive right in, then. At least it can be a bit of a home for the crowd around here.

    Erm, sorry for the bump.

    Here's an update:

    Server: 8.3.29.134:27015

    Review Site: <a href="http://www.laconica.net/radiator" target="_blank">http://www.laconica.net/radiator</a>

    Community Site: <a href="http://www.laconica.net/radiator/forums" target="_blank">http://www.laconica.net/radiator/forums</a>

The main site should be half-way viewable. I've got to fix old, broken code and make everything mesh better with the uber experimental phpBB 3. But I'm open for map and rotation suggestions for now.

i was really never that into custom maps unless they were done up nicely with a good defaultish feel. Best way to get your maps played is to work for a mod <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Nice site Rob. Are you interested in branching out into other hl2 based games? E.g. dystopia, the hidden etc?

I have to say, although I'm a big fan of deathmatch, I never really enjoyed HL2DM. Once the novelty of the grav gun wore off, it got old. Quake3 CPMA is the pinnacle of DM imo.

I wouldn't say that, there's a lot of classic dm maps out there. They may not have been made famous by sites like the Radium, but I'm sure that they helped. The idea of a review site is to find those good maps to extend the longevity of the game.

I am, yeah. Just DM for now. <strike>I <i>think</i> that I'm allowed to install mods, but I have no idea which ones I would pick yet.</strike> My plan is to get a community going before TF2 hits the shelves.

On second thought, I got the HL2DM deal. I'm pretty sure I'd have to rent a dedicated box if I wanted to host mods. That's 10x more money per month. We'll see once I get out of college and a into a job.
