NS2 Pre-Orders

Just wondering if UWE is planning for pre-orders anytime soon .

To be honest i'd be quite happy to give $20-40 up front - even if worst scenario ns2 never comes out and i lose my money. I'm sure many fans would be happy to do this also.

Looking at the perks of having $$$ upfront for the dev's means that they have more time to make the game better, or hire extra help.

If that's the way you feel about things, I'm sure Flayra would appreciate donations to the Constellation program <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Thats an interesting point, all other games have a pre-order low cost.
But i think NS2 will release 1.Q of 2008, so it take a long time.
Maybe there is a pre-load order thing like dod:s

Yeah, I'm certain a lot of people wouldn't mind pre-ordering already today. It might give a unhelpful impression of that the game is close to release though.

At the late stages of development when you expect it to be 2-4 months left, you should definitely allow for pre-order. And with steam you can allow downloading of content files the days/weeks before release date, if the developer wants to.

As much as I love NS I'm not preordering anything until I've at least played a demo or read a review by someone whose opinion I trust.

Think of NS1 as the demo.

Think of NS1 as the demo.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->If that's the case I could be really harsh and say NS has taken 5 (?) years to get balanced, and the most important elements of balance post-v1.0 were brought about by the caretakers of NS while Flayra was concentrating on NS2. NS2 is adding new weapons and new tech, so inevitably there will be some re-balancing involved. That's why I'd never throw money up front without knowing more about the game, a lot more.

Let me ask you, what would have happened if you had paid money for Team Fortress 2 because you liked TFC the mod? (the -original- Team Fortress 2, we're talking)

Which is why NS1 isn't a demo. It was a mod, which was made for free, which means Flayra and Co. couldn't devote the kind of resources to it that they could a commercial game. Zen of Sudoku would be a better source as far as how Unknown Worlds would treat its retail products.

TO MAX, CHARLIE, AND THE THREE OTHER BEST BUY EMPLOYEES WHO FREQUENT THIS FORUM:

If UWE wishes to retail pre-orders I have the paperwork ready for you to apply for addition to store stock @ Best Buy. Please contact John Archer or Chap Achen. This has been done for several software titles company wide before, I see no reason why NS couldn't be added.

This has been talked about before. What was said was that valve will not allow pre-orders through steam until the product is "more or less done" (something to that effect). So maybe when they get to beta stage we can preorder <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I can't imagine taking pre-orders before a release date is announced, and I don't think we'll be announcing a release date until we're quite a bit farther along in the development of the game.

I dont think this game is big enough to support a pre-order program.

Maybe on steam, but on retail shelves?

I think I was misunderstood when I said to think of NS1 as a demo. Yes, it's going to be different, and yes, rebalancing is probably being worked on, BUT it has the same premise, style of gameplay, but doesn't have as much as NS2 will (as no demo does). Yes, NS1 is a mod (thank you Sherlock) but I think that if you liked it then there's no point in not getting NS2. And I didn't mean "look how long they took to balance NS1, that's how it's gonna be for the second", I mean look how it is now. Obviously they won't release something that people PAID for if it's not perfect from the get-go. And again: I didn't mean NS1 was literally the demo for NS2. But the basis of the gameplay and style are there.

Yes, but since you played it all along (assumption) you must have thought it to be fun.

NS1 showcases what UWE are capable of doing with limited resources. Yes it took a long time to balance, but they've learned from all that. I imagine balancing will still be a problem in the very beginning, but they'll be better at balancing now.

However big anticipations there are for NS2 though, Crispy's views are still understandable. He doesn't have to defend that he wants to be careful with what he spend his gaming budget on.

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->Just because I've been on the forums this amount of time doesn't mean I played NS constantly. When I first played NS I loved it. It was novel and ######-scary. The people started learning the game, the exploits, advanced techniques like bunny-hopping, ludicrous pistol scripts and Lerk pancaking and I was kinda put off, but not enough to stop playing it. What actually made me stop playing was when I got good enough to appreciate the balance was totally screwed so Aliens were <i>forced</i> to go down the 'MC first' route. So, until recently I'd been very disenchanted with NS and the lack of addressing the fundamental things wrong with the Alien tech tree. Now it's all fine and dandy and the gameplay is the tightest it's ever been, pity this came after the community had dwindled, mostly due to the excruciating forum downtime.

It's good to see the team bouncing back from this, but I do need to see more of NS2 before I get excited. Source has some interesting quirks with its netcode (supposedly) that could kinda screw NS's fast-moving gameplay. So I'm sitting on the fence.
