(not quite) a Newbie, bearing questions!

I played NS fairly heavily a few years ago, but after loosing broadband when I moved I, evidently, stopped. However, now that I'm getting broadband back I'm going to take up NS again, quite simply because it is one of the best games I've ever played. And, well, anything is better than WoW and I'd hate to resort to playing that...

So, firstly- does one need to download a copy of HL off Steam, or will older retail versions work also?

Secondly, I can recall using a program that listed servers, ping, number of players, game time, etc... I'm sure there are several out there, but what, these days, is the most popular and useful?

Thanks in advance,

-S.

The easiest way would be to put your retail key into steam and download hl through steam. The NS installer will look for the steam install and should install it to the correct place. (I think you need to run hl once after you download it to setup the proper directories).

Crud, so I'm going to need to install Steam regardless?

Most hl related things have moved to steam. There are ways to play NS with a won hl install but you will need to search for those (and it's just easier to play it on steam).

Yes, you have to use steam at this point.

If you left HL around when steam was launching I can understand why you don't want to use steam, however it is now actualy a very good piece of software (as opposed to the giant festering pile of dog poo it was).

Also, there are still 3rd party server browsers (All Seeing Eye and what not), however there really is no longer any point in them as the Steam server browser is actualy VERY good.

ASE is nice if you have non-steam games and you want a unified server browser.

But if all you are playing are games on Steam then I suggest jsut sticking with the steam server browser.

heh, this is what I get for writtign a response and then walking away to do work.

There are WON replacements (no-WON and WON2) however their popularity is severly lacking, if they even still exist (havn't bothered with them in years)

I left maybe a year before HL2 was released, so, the only time I've used Steam is to get HL2 working- on a dodgy dial-up connection, not exactly fun- in fact, it was a complete pain in the ass, to be quite honest.

So Steam has a built in server browser? That could actually be quite useful, for a variety of reasons.

Thanks for the link Faskalia, I'll try it out and see how that works. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
